hey i think i may have difficulties adapting to the physical and special split from gen III to gen IV

i grew up on pokemon but actually realized how deep the combat gets only recently when i started replaying the games starting at ruby now my second game is diamond but i feel kind of clueless. in gen III it seemed like you could take on any leader or elite member based off of typing and super effectiveness was crucial but in gen IV it seems like (and i have yet to play just about to start) it nerfs that. is it still the same, just instead of by type it’s just by move? how do i know what the opponents stats are or should i just lower their defense if i’m going to use a physical move regardless? it seems like status moves are gonna be my bread and butter if i am getting all of this.

arriving from gen III and looking for tips for my team

yeah so i finally am old enough to have spending money and finally get all the authentic pokemon games (still working on getting some). i just conquered ruby and it was amazing now it’s onto diamond then platinum but i have questions.

so i know there is the physical and special split but i shouldn’t have too much of a hassle with that. my main question is what are some of the best ‘mons to have on my team but listen to this first before you answer: in ruby my team consisted of pokemon with amazing combos and stall.

think skarmory with spikes and roar, gardevoir with calm mind and psychic, slaking with hyperbeam, facade and guts tailow, etc. it was truly remarkable how much my team had each others backs and worked with each other; it’s made me adore pokemon even more.

so yeah, i’m looking for some pokemon with that kind of dynamic and also some powerhouse ones. i keep reading about gengar and milotic and i know gen iv introduced bonus evolutions so if it helps i do have access to two nintendo ds and other gen iv games for the trade evolutions.

i have so many questions (i really want to try a blissey and garchomp out, what are the starters like) but not sure which pokemon are even available before the elite 4 so that’s why i’m asking for some heads up.

thanks all!

what are some of the most underrated items?

so i was doing a D4 run with the Explorer maining some Jousting Lances and focusing on speed so i could chop down all the trees quicker and then i picked up the Power Generator (increases damage based on speed) in the middle of the run or so and i wound up doing around 400 damage with crits by end game, completely getting rid of the -40% damage nerf that the Explorer starts with.

obviously its a niche item and only works for certain builds but i actually never really have picked it up on a brotato that’s not Speedy. does anyone got any interesting items that would help with brotatoes that aren’t for their main builds? any fun stories?
