Please don't use greek text in your fanfic [PJO]

I have read a couple of fics recently that have whole discussions between characters in 'Ancient Greek' using actual greek characters and I basically just skipped it. This wasn't meant to be a discussion that the reader didn't understand, the writer did put in translations in hover text boxes, which was nice, but I still didn't like it.

I've also seen it used in single words, like names, but I'll skip it then too. If I can't read the word in my head, I'm not reading it. I am not familiar with the letters so I wont recognise if it's used again, you could be using a bunch of similar looking words, I'm not paying enough attention to notice.

If you want characters to speak in a different language and be understood then just use italics. The only time I would expect to see greek writing would be if it's not meant to be understood and even then I prefer english letters.

Greek letters are too disruptive to my reading experience. I'm not going to waste the limited time I have for reading fanfic, trying to puzzle out what you wrote. I want to immerse myself in the story, not click a bit of text, read that, click away, read to the next line, then click a new bit of text, and so on.

There are other ways a writer can indicate that someone is speaking another language.

How did Percy knock Gabe over in TLT [PJO]

In The Lightning Thief, Percy makes a hand sign that he'd seen Grover make and it knocks Gabe off his feet.

I've seen a lot of assumptions that this is a type of nature magic, because it was a satyr doing it, but my first assumption when I read it was that it was almost a religious sign, like making the sign of the cross for christians. Something that warns off evil or a blessing or curse. So it's not weird that Percy could do it, because he was invoking a god, not doing something himself.

Has there been any clarification on what that sign was or what exactly it did? Have there been any other examples of signs like that, not related to a demigods own power? It seems strange that this is the only example of signs like this.

Batman crossover suggestions [pjo]

I love crossovers and Percy Jackson/Batman crossovers are particularly good. I've read some really good ones. But I've noticed that a lot of very similar plot devices are getting a bit annoying.

  1. Percy loses his mother and gets adopted by Bruce.

  2. Bruce is a long lost relative of Percy's

  3. Bruce is a relative of Annabeth

Yes there are others, some of the pairings a cute but I'd like to propose some new prompts.

  1. Percy couldn't get into New Rome University and gets into Gotham University instead (to be fair I think I have seen this one done). He doesn't want to be a superhero but can't help but get involved in a case.

  2. Nico is sent to collect the Joker, who has pulled a Sisyphus and cheats Death and now Thanatos won't go to collect him, so Hades sends Nico and Nico asks Percy to come as back up.

  3. Percy is sent on a quest by Dionysus to lift a curse on Arkham Asylum.

  4. Gotham reads a both a Wild place and a civilised one and Grover goes to investigate as part of his role as Lord of the Wild. Percy and Annabeth come along as back up, because satyrs don't come back from Gotham. Gotham has some really strange naiads, dryads etc.

  5. Percy decides to train his ability with poison by trying to clean out the toxic waste that has leaked into the waters and soil around Gotham. Instead of poison his power is actually anti toxins.

  6. Annabeth, Katie and Piper go to Gotham to investigate Poison Ivy. They aren't sure if she is a child of Demeter. (She isn't a demigod, she's just weird).

  7. Annabeth and Percy go to investigate rumours about the Court of Owls, to see if they are connected to Athena. Maybe at the request of Athena? Even the gods don't get involved in Gotham

  8. Somehow either Percy or Nico were the ones responsible for Jason's resurrection. Percy, when they were there in TLT or the Sword of Hades thing, or Nico basically anytime he was in or out of the underworld. Jason sees them around somewhere and comes to investigate them.

  9. The Joker is a new monster archetype. Like the Minotaur gets resurrected, so does the Joker. Only if he's killed with Celestial Bronze will he stay dead. At least for a little while.

  10. Instead of no gods around, there are too many gods around. Two Face attracts Tyche, Poison Ivy - Demeter or Persephone, Catwoman - Hermes, Scarecrow - Phobos. The only way to tidy up the city is to determine a city Patron, so like the contest between Athena and Poseidon for Athens, there is a new contest to be Patron of Gotham. I suggest Dionysus for the winner.

  11. Athena really likes Batman. (This might even be canon). She gifts Bruce with a new demigod thought-baby. He contacts Wonder Woman who sends Annabeth to him for a briefing on what he can expect when raising a demigod. (Basically nothing he hasn't dealt with before.)

Yes, I know a lot of these are focused on Percy but he is my favourite character. Use or change them as you please, but post the link because I'd love to read them.

I do like when Percy becomes part of the Batfamily but I'd like it if that came at the end of the fic, after they'd learned to trust each other rather than starting off as part of the family.

I would prefer that the Gotham characters are not Demigods. They don't need to be connected to the gods to be strange. Too many demigods just makes the world feel smaller in my opinion. Humans are weird too.

I read another post somewhere, where it was suggested that if a girl Harry looked like Lily, Snape would have treated her very differently.

That's what I'm looking for.

BUT!

I want it to be clear in the story that Snape is a creepy weirdo for this. I don't want girl Harry to bring out Snapes softer side, no paternal feeling.

The scope could vary from a passing comment or an accidental slip of the tongue calling Harry by Lilys name to a fill on obsession.

It's just important that it is recognized that Snapes behavior is inappropriate and NOT reciprocated.

Note for the trolls, I am not suggesting that the canon character would have acted inappropriately, I want to read a fanfiction where he does and is called out.
