Stop lying to young reenactors
I am guilty of mainly posting about my German WW2 stuff (ancient/medieval/modern reenactors, I love you all a lot) and interacting with such posts a lot because that is where my expertiese lies. I have noticed a trend on this sub I don't like.
It happens on this sub at least 2-3 times a week that a young and novice reenactor will post his impression, usually filled with extremely low quality cheap rubbish, and comments will usually be really supportive with a high karma score.
I do not understand this. Why are we saying things like "this is a great start!" to people that CLEARLY have just bought the first thing that was available at a cheap price? This is going to set them back a huge amount of time and money. It will entrench them in poor reenactor practices or worse, have them create a mentality of "good enough" which is the opposite of what accurate history demands.
I only see a few explanations why and I have a response to all:
- Experienced reenactors want to be supportive
Don't. Be helpful. Tell them the hard truth they need over the easy "you're doing great for a start!" line you KNOW is wrong. They will thank you later. You don't have to be a dick about it but what do you think is the better overall thing for them to hear?
- Inexperienced reenactors that don't know any better are the ones that reply
Then where are all the experts that usually populate this sub? We need to be out there teaching the new guys, I think. That's how we build a community.
- Reenactors that don't know the period give their ignorant opinion
This seems extremely unlikely. If I see someone in an impression I know nothing about my thoughts on it are not gonna go beyond "that's a really cool kit!" and I'm not gonna go around telling the man "your coat looks amazing and accurate!" if it's the literal first time I'm looking at a 1750s Russian overcoat or whatever.
I'm honestly puzzled at this. Why are we not helping novices improve and are instead selling them the "you look great!" line when they just bought the cheapest trash they could possibly find?
