Would personal ventures fail a background check?

If I placed a platform that I built that had an LLC and resulted in a small source in income and a grassroots community organization that I held for 2 years and did for free, would those fail a background check if I put them under work experience since they were things I did on my own and not in a corporate setting for a company? I put these on my application and my resume to help explain gaps in employment.

If so, how would I explain that in an interview? Do I bring it up if they don’t ask?

Temp worker retaliation charge under investigation for a year. Not sure if I can get a lawyer.

Hi,

I’m in kind of unique situation as a temp, since my charge turned into two separate retaliation charges for my temp agency and for the company that I’m on assignment at. I’ve been on this assignment for 3.5 years.

I initially reported several temps and employees for discriminating against and bullying other people in the office. Should’ve been open and shut, but my temp agency didn’t escalate it when I reported and I found out about it 6 months after the fact (the excuse being that they assumed I had resolved it myself), the company I’m contracting for tried to move me to a different shift without my consent, and then one of the employees told me directly that she knew I had reported her because of what she had been told.

Later, I was retaliated against after an employee yelled at me on the floor for not helping her immediately with a project because I was swamped with my own work. I froze up because I didn’t know how to respond and asked her days later if I could talk to her. I told her that I didn’t want her to think I was ignoring her, I was just uncomfortable about being yelled at and wanted her to known that I was more than willing to help her in the future if she needed me. She apologized for her behavior and stated that she wanted to be respectful, but then I was pulled aside and told that I was on a first and final warning for being “perceived as aggressive.” Someone overheard the aftermath of my conversation with that employee, and apparently one of the employees that I had reported for bullying told her to report me, because I was most likely going to report her for yelling (I wasn’t).

After this, my supervisor, who’d had it out for me since my first report (since it reflected poorly on her and she apparently didn’t get a raise because of it), threatened me, months later about hostility still happening on the team, and told me that I’d be fired without investigation if I reported anything else. She also removed my OT without telling me and my agency upheld the decision. Following this, I was later sexually harassed by an employee while in the bathroom and couldn’t report it because of her threat (which I’ve shown to the EEOC through texts I sent out directly after the incident happened).

My charges with the EEOC went live 2 weeks following my intake call, and 2 weeks after that my supervisor passed away. Temps have also been banned from participating in anything involving full time employees company wide a month following my charges going live (and I understand that COULD be a coincidence, but leadership keeps saying that the changes are strictly coming from the company’s legal team).

The site I’m contracting at refuses to take accountability, because they say I’m not their employee and that since I reported about other employees being discriminated against and not facing discrimination myself that theres no discrimination charge, and my agency says they didn’t take any negative actions and that anything that MAY have happened is on the site and they aren’t liable for breaking the law.

I’m not sure if a lawyer will take my case, because we’ve been in the investigation phase for a year. And despite having emails, text messages, 50+ events of discrimination and retaliation with dates and times, many of which serve as direct contradictions to what both companies are saying, I know that I’m a temp that lives in Texas, I’m at will, and, despite being threatened with it, I haven’t been fired.

Does anyone have any advice on getting a lawyer if this eventually results in me getting an RTS? I know most lawyers want something that’s open and shut, and I’m not sure of what to say to get help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: Please note that I did try to find a lawyer BEFORE I went to the EEOC, but most of the firms I went to told me to go to the EEOC first to see what the outcome was OR to wait to be fired. The issue is that the retaliation at the time was escalating so much at my job, and I realistically couldn’t afford to be fired in THIS economy.

Singular Typo in Resume

I am currently under pending hiring manager review at my dream job for a role as a communications specialist. I edited my resume over and over until I felt like it was perfect, then I submitted it.

I managed to pass ATS, and the recruitment team sent my application to the hiring manager. I’ve been trying to get into this company for the past year, and I feel as though I actually have a chance… but after reviewing my application’s progress I noticed something that made my heart sink. After all of that editing, all of that work, I misspelled “environment” in my bio. I’ve got metrics, KPIs, achievements, deliverables, examples of work with internal/external stakeholders, all that jazz, but the typo is freaking me out.

The position calls for a person that can edit and write like a pro, and I feel like this is the kiss of death. 😭

Outside of my resume, I got a referral, shared 2 articles of mine that were featured on Forbes, a cover letter, and a 30/60/90 day mockup for what I plan to do in this role (that I worked my butt off to make it look like it came directly from the company).

Be honest with me, how bad is the typo going to hurt me? Will the portfolio speak for itself, or could the typo be the deciding factor in keeping me from an interview?
