Has anyone got a spouse visa approved with the sponsor still living abroad?

Hey all, hoping someone's been through something similar.

Applying for a UK spouse visa from abroad on the savings route (money side is fine). My partner's my sponsor and has settled status. We're in a civil partnership, relationship is 100% genuine — lived together in the UK for about a year before, plus loads of time together since, and we're actually together right now.

Here's what's stressing me out: my partner's been living and working remotely abroad for about 2 years now, and the work's open-ended so we don't have a set date for going back to the UK yet. The plan is definitely to live in the UK together once the visa comes through, and we've got a landlord letter saying a flat's ready for us when he's back. But I keep reading that they scrutinise whether you really intend to live in the UK, and I'm nervous ours looks shaky because he's been away so long with no firm return date.

So basically:

  • Anyone applied where the settled sponsor was still abroad at the time? Did they question the UK intention?
  • Did not having a fixed return date actually cause issues, or was genuine intention + a place to live enough?
  • What did you put in to show you're serious about moving back? Did it help?
  • Anyone get asked for more info on this instead of just getting refused?

Any stories welcome, good or bad. Just trying to figure out if there are any risk of rejection. Thanks!

Do I really need to pay for BPS membership?

Hi everyone,

I’m applying to UK doctorates in counselling psychology and I’m a bit confused about the GBC evidence requirement.

My background:

  • Undergrad in psychology from a UK university.
  • Degree is BPS‑accredited and my transcript explicitly states it confers eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).
  • I’m not currently a BPS member and I’m trying to avoid extra fees if possible.

What the programmes say:

  • City, University of London:“The evidence would normally be in the form of a letter from the BPS confirming that you are a Graduate Member and that you have been granted GBC…”
  • University of Manchester:“Please include in your application a copy of your membership letter or a document including the web address on the BPS website where we can find evidence that your degree meets the criteria.”

However, the Clearing House guidance on GBC documents says that for UK degrees, if your transcript states that it grants GBC, you do not need another document, and you can also use an official university letter confirming GBC instead of a BPS letter.

My questions:

  1. For counselling psychology doctorates, have anyone successfully used just your transcript or a university‑issued GBC letter without being a BPS member?
  2. Do any programmes insist on a BPS‑issued membership/GBC letter even for UK BPS‑accredited degrees?
  3. If I do join once as a Graduate Member just to get the BPS letter, can I then cancel without it affecting my applications or eligibility?

I’m trying to work out whether BPS membership is truly necessary. Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How to stay sane as an aspiring psychologist

Hey guys,

I’m currently in the process of applying for a doctorate in counselling psychology, and I honestly feel so defeated by the whole journey of becoming a psychologist. I’ve been trying to secure an AP role for a year, and although I’ve had plenty of interviews, I still haven’t received an offer. It has definitely affected my confidence.

Is anyone else in a similar stage of life? It can feel incredibly hard to sit with this much uncertainty after investing so many years and so much effort into this field.

I’d really appreciate any tips on how to stay sane, keep doing my best, and continue pushing through.

Thanks a lot!

Worried about a mistake: Cash amount on application form doesn’t match my bank statement.

Hey everyone,

I’m in the middle of an application process right now and I realized I made a mistake. The total amount of cash I wrote down on my official application form does not match the exact closing balance on the bank statements I submitted. I put in the highest amount I held in my bank account instead the lowest amount that has been held for 6 months.

would this be a problem? or would a cover letter explaining this issue be sufficient.

Question about spouse visa cash saving route

Hi everyone,

I’m preparing a UK spouse visa application and I’m a bit worried about the financial requirement.

I’m relying on savings, but during the relevant 6-month period my account dipped to around £85,000 before going back up to £100,000. My partner also has an investment account, it was held and under his control for over 6 months, and about £10,070 from that was liquidated before the application date (we have the investment account statement showing fund has been held for 6 months, liquidation proof and bank statement showing that the money is in his bank account now)

Would this be a problem? I’m not sure whether the temporary dip means the 6-month period effectively resets, or whether the liquidated investment funds can still be counted if we provide evidence showing they were owned by my partner and converted to cash before applying.

I’m trying to decide whether to apply now or wait a bit longer so the funds are clearer and easier to evidence.

Has anyone had a similar situation? Thanks a lot!

spouse visa financial requirement - urgent help

Hey everyone, hoping someone can help with a stressful situation we've landed in with the financial requirement for a UK spouse visa.

Quick context:

  • Application submitted 29 May 2026
  • Going purely through savings

I didn't liquidate the investment funds to cash until AFTER we submitted the application. The withdrawals happened on 31 May, 11 June and 15 June — the application was 29 May. The money is now in my current account, but technically the liquidation happened after the application date. I have attached all the information in an explanation letter for the caseworker to review.

Would this impact my application?

Confused about research for counselling psych

Hey everyone,

I'm prepping my research proposal for a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and I'm a bit lost — would really love some advice from anyone who's done this or works in the field! I have some topics in mind but I can't figure out how to properly connect them to counselling psychology (like what makes something "counselling psych" vs. just regular clinical/general psychology), I'm not sure what actually needs to be in the proposal beyond the obvious background and methodology stuff (what are they actually looking for?), and I'm confused about how counselling psychology research is different from clinical psych or other psychology areas (what's the unique angle?).

Thanks so much, any help would be amazing!

VFS Appointment Rescheduled

Hey everyone

Quick question about my UK spouse visa VFS appointment:
• I rescheduled from June 2 → June 4
• The official VFS site confirms my appointment is on the 4th
• But I just got an email saying “pay VFS fee ASAP” and the attachment still says June 2
• Today is June 1, and I was planning to pay on June 3

Has anyone dealt with this? Can I just trust the portal and ignore the email’s date?
