Little things that make long flights easier for me

32M. I fly fairly often for work, occasionally for fun. After reading a few threads about long flights, I thought I’d share a few things that have helped me, along with some useful suggestions I picked up in the comments.

One idea I liked was keeping everything you need at your seat in a small pouch: headphones, eye mask, cable, lip balm and a snack. Take it out before your bag goes overhead and you won’t have to keep rummaging through the overhead bin. I also use a chest pocket for my phone. It helps once the tray table is down and my trouser pockets become almost impossible to reach.

The slightly unusual thing that’s helped me is a light resistance band. A coworker who sits at a desk all day suggested looping one around my thighs while sitting. Mine is rated at about 10 lb, and I don’t deliberately push outward against it. I’ve tried it on flights and find it easier to maintain a comfortable sitting position, with less aching in my lower back.

For in-flight entertainment, I plug my display glasses into my phone, which gives me a bigger screen to watch on without bringing my iPad. On my last flight to New Zealand, I watched some Stranger Things, then put on The Conjuring and Obsession. Turns out watching horror surrounded by people is weirdly satisfying. I’m scared, but somehow feel completely safe lol.

Another suggestion was keeping fresh underwear, socks and a T-shirt together somewhere accessible, along with a toothbrush. Especially useful when you land in the morning and can’t check into your hotel for another few hours. It’s easy to pack for the destination and forget about those hours in between.

What little things have made your long flights more comfortable? Especially anything you only figured out after a few trips.

I checked my bank statement after almost getting charged $348. bad idea

Last month I signed up for a Crazy Egg free trial for a side project. Used it a couple of times and figured I'd remember to cancel it before the trial ended.

I didn't.

On Tuesday I got a notification about a $348 annual charge that was about to go through. I canceled it just in time, then decided to look through my bank statements while I was at it.

That was a mistake.

I found two streaming services I'd completely forgotten I was paying for, plus some random app that's been charging me $9.99 a month since May. None of them were things I actually wanted anymore. I just never got around to canceling.

I swear subscriptions are designed to disappear into the background until you randomly notice them months later. Every time I think I've cleaned everything up, there's another one I forgot existed.

So I think that's my new rule: if I sign up for a free trial, I cancel the auto-renew before I even close the app. Future me clearly can't be trusted.

The other thing that's been helping is going through my statement once a month and flagging anything I don't immediately recognize. That's how I caught the $9.99 charge.

I also got lucky this time because I had a reminder set up that caught the renewal before I noticed it myself. But Im trying not to rely on that, because apparently my track record with reminders isn't great either.

What do you guys do? Cancel immediately, use reminders, or just periodically discover subscriptions you forgot existed?

a phone number is bullying me into drinking water and it's working

My ADHD brain forgets water exists. Alarms never worked. I dismiss them in 0.2 seconds and instantly forget they existed. What weirdly works is I now get actual texts every couple hours from a phone number that has appointed itself my hydration mom. It doesn't beep at me, it talks to me. Yesterday it opened with "your executive function just checked in" and things escalated from there.

I know exactly how this sounds. But my brain ignores every notification and responds to social pressure, even completely fake social pressure from a phone number. Being mildly judged works better than any alarm I have ever set. I have drunk more water this week than in the entire last month.
Hydrated and slightly embarrassed. What's the dumbest trick that actually works on your brain?
