Managing Expectations
Congratulations to all those who got their admission letters and acceptance. I am seeing many posts regarding HU university life etc. I realised giving you all a heads-up before university starts is a good idea, since most of you aren't aware about many things.
I am copying a post from one of my friends, I am sure it will help you all.
reality check no. 1: habib is not a party school i repeat it is NOT a party school. unless u have a v good friend circle that compensates for the mauj maxti that u all have been promised about (the promise is fake)
reality check no. 2: your first semester is going to be traumatic in one way or the other (character building wastai zaroori honda aey). brace yourself. dw, u will have a good laugh at it in your later semesters.
reality check no. 3: yes, it is true; not all first semester friend groups or friendships last that long. and it's alright. so don't get too emotionally involved. take it slow. socialize karo. u will eventually find your ppl along the way.
reality check no. 4: u r going to be academically humbled thoughout your 4 years. u r going to fail courses, beg for 0.5 bumps, beg for retakes, extra credit assignments and what not. there will be times when u will be overwhelmed w assignments, projects, deadlines. so break your procrastinating habits. it will only get u in more mess and stress.
reality check no. 5: gpa does matter. many curricular activities around here have a gpa requirement. even TAships have a minimum requirement of gpa. so don't let yourself loose. maintain your gpa shuru sai hee. and keep this in mind that there will be atleast one course that is going to fuck up your gpa. so keep a track of your grades.
reality check no. 6: it is NOT cool to throw around big terms and accuse or associate anyone with such terms. be polite. be respectful. i assume u all r adults and mature enough to not play around with sensitive topics (nhi bhi hou tou ab hojao).
reality check no. 7: RO bohat rulaye ga. whether it be attendence or enrollment, RO will make sure to make your life hell and give u traumas for life. so please check your attendance daily it's literally not a joke. (we all hate RO collectively jbtw)
reality check no. 8: u won't get around here without asking for help. so shatter your egos, push yourselves out of your comfort zones, overcome your shyness and ask (big emphasis on ask) for help.
reality check no. 9: no, not everyone around here is friendly. u will have a fair share of clashes w ppl. but u will find a fair share of good ppl as well. j don't trust anyone blindly.
reality check no. 10: digital footprint is real and it can greatly impact your personal and professional life. tou jou bhi post kareyn soch samjh kar kareyn.
reality check no. 11: Takhleeq has to be the coolest office around here with the coolest project managers. but yeah take full advantage to Takhleeq, STRP, GSCP and learn abroad programs as they will greatly help you build your profile for masters.
A few points I would like to add
- Apply for every opportunity that you see, even if you think you don't deserve it. Learn the art of failing, you applied and didn't get in? That doesn't matter, you won't get to your 50th leap if you don't make the first
- Find a good friend circle who are both studious and fun loving. Balance between both is important.
- You will come across people who will annoy the fuck out of you, it's better to keep your head down and focus on yourself. No need to get involved in politics as it will waste your time and mess your mental health
- These 4 years will have your best days, your worst days and everything in between. Some days you will hate this university and some days you will love it. Its important to understand that these 4 years will shape your practical life, you made a mistake? Learn from it. Don't take every setback personal and remember its not that deep. You will make bad decisions, so its better to learn how to move on and get your required lessons from it. Adopt this mentality from the start as these 4 years are full of bad choices and what not.
