Fundamental question- would you take a gel at mile 21 if you feel nauseous?

Thinking back to my full in early May- all systems were good at mile 21 but was feeling a tad nauseous. I held my gel for a full mile before deciding take it at mile 22 with nausea building.

Took the gel and my stomach was a mess the rest of the way- adding to other struggles for the last 3 miles. That saw my 3:10 pace slip to 3:16.

Question for the crowd- would you take that gel? Is it worth it? I was doing dumb marathon math at that point- would I even feel the effect of the gel before the end of the race? What if I throw up?

This tour has elevated certain songs for me

I was at UBS and MSG last night. I love all Bruce- but Murder Inc, Land of Hope and Dreams, Ghost of Tom Joad and even wrecking ball were all songs I liked but didn’t love.

The versions on these tour are hitting so much better. Not sure if it’s the power of the band, his energy or a combo- but new appreciation for all the songs.

Murder inc in particular has been fucking awesome. Crowd has been super into it.

Best threads/podcasys/anecdotes on executing a calorie deficit between marathon cycles

Down a rabbit hole about a week into my cut and trying to find a rhythm. Struggling with the moving target of measuring calories in and adjusting for runs (trying to stay at 35 mpw). Hoping to cut 15-20lbs before starting next training block.

Honestly first time actively tiring to lose weight since starting running in 2012.

Any favorite threads/podcasts/personal anecdotes on what works?

The course and weather- flat double loop with long straight away. Chilly weather and very windy at points (more on this later)

The good- I really found a groove and while my pace snuck up a bit- I consciously pulled back and honestly felt great. HR snuck up a bit but I felt smooth and in control. Had GUs every 25 minutes and water at most stops. No chafing or GI issues.

The bad: Miles 21.5-23.5 were on a long straight away straight into a sustained 25-30 mph headwind. It was brutal and more intense than the first lap around. People were dropping flies. My pace drop on 21 and 22 were purely a result of the wind- I was trying to keep my effort even, but it was tough.

The ugly- miles 23-26.2 were a struggle train. I was getting an upset stomach, small cramps in legs, and the mental grind of the wind wore me down. I had a GU at 22 that didn’t sit right. I was walking water stops and had to stop a few times to collect myself. When I was running I was still able to sustain a 7:30 pace or so- it was just a grind to keep it there. I wouldn’t fully say i hit “the wall” but I was flirting.

Random: the 3:15 pacer was terrible. He told everyone he was aiming for 7:25s and ran a 2nd mile at 7:08 and I think he finished in 3:11 or 3:12. My plan to sit with him for the first 4-5 miles went sideways.

Also the GPS vs course differential was throwing me off. 3:10 marathon is 7:15 pace- I thought I banked time in the 1st half but I crossed the half at 1:35:11- still a bit confused on that one.

Overall: happy with the result and feel like I ran 95% of the race I wanted to run and still ran a good race. I could blame the wind- but there’s always some variable you gotta account for- those quicker miles probably set me back when I needed to power through the wind. That being said- without that wind I think I’m able to maintain my pace better.

I posted a lot on my training in previous posts but happy to answer any questions.

Ran my last dress rehearsal run in Endorphins 4- 2nd time ever using the shoes. Planned to ease into 6 mile run and finish with 2 miles at MP. First mile felt easy and came in at 7:09. 2nd one at 7:02 at which point I had to physically stop to slow down. Ran the last 4 very easy around 7:45s

Looking at the run- HR was at 135 for first mile and 141 for 2nd.

I’m aiming for 3:08- this run and start had me double thinking if that’s too conservative.

It was perfect weather (which Sunday will be) flat and on tapered legs.

Garmin is predicting 3:04 which I take with a grain of salt.

Have a great appreciation for the ESB has done this tour (and previous tours to an extent. Obvious everyone is old- but I think in addition to playing songs that are topical- they also adjust for where everyone age wise.

The huge band (19 members) effectively means every part of the band gets their moments to shine- but it’s not all on them for 3+ hours. Nils gets his solo, Max gets to show off, Tom brings in some (relatively youth), ect.

From a setlist standpoint- I think songs like Youngstown and GOTJ actually play up to the current version of Bruce’s voice. The gravel in his voice (Ghosts!) adds elements to these songs that weren’t there in the mid 2000s.

Reminds of veterans sports team that are so comfortable in their own shoes and know their own limitations- that they evolve their game to met their current level of play.

Thoughts? Or am I just too excited for

Next Tuesday and I’m looking to chat!
