Should I record cockpit audio with my iPhone, Insta360 Ace Pro 2, or a dedicated audio recorder?

I’m trying to figure out the best way to record cockpit audio during flights.

I used to record everything on my GoPro, but it tends to overheat during longer recordings. When that happens, I lose both the video and the cockpit audio, which is obviously not ideal.

I’m now considering a few options:

  1. Recording audio with my iPhone
  2. Recording audio directly into my Insta360 Ace Pro 2
  3. Buying a dedicated audio recorder

For those of you who record cockpit audio, what setup has been the most reliable? Is using an iPhone good enough, or is a dedicated audio recorder the better long-term solution?

My main concern is reliability. I don’t want to lose the audio just because the camera overheats or shuts down.

Thank you in advance!

First PC build — is this enough for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 VR as a real pilot? Any cheaper alternatives?

Hey everyone,

I’m planning my first PC build and would like some advice before buying everything.

A little background: I’m a real-world private pilot (PPL holder), and my main reason for building this PC is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. I want to use it more as a training tool rather than just a game.

Main things I want to practice:

  • Cockpit flows and checklists
  • Traffic patterns
  • VFR navigation
  • Procedures
  • Radio/ATC practice
  • Maintaining proficiency between real flights

I’m also planning to use VR because the ability to naturally look around the cockpit seems very useful for real-world flying practice.

Here is my current build:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
CPU Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
GPU: ASUS Dual Radeon RX 7800 XT OC Edition 16GB GDDR6
RAM: Kingston Fury Beast DDR5-6000 CL36 32GB (2x16GB)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 AORUS Elite AX V2
Storage: Corsair MP600 Elite 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD
PSU: MSI MAG A850GL PCIe5 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular
Case: Corsair 3500X RGB White

Total cost is approximately ¥306,000 (~$2,000 USD) in Japan.

Questions:

  1. Is this setup enough for MSFS 2024 VR with good performance?
  2. For VR specifically, is the RX 7800 XT 16GB a good choice, or would NVIDIA (RTX 4070 Super / 4070 Ti Super) be better because of DLSS, Frame Generation, drivers, etc.?
  3. Is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D worth it for MSFS, or should I save money with a 7800X3D?
  4. Is 32GB DDR5 enough for MSFS 2024 VR with add-ons, detailed airports, and aircraft?
  5. Am I overspending anywhere? Are there cheaper parts that would give nearly the same MSFS VR experience?

My goal is not maximum benchmark numbers — I want the best value setup for realistic flight practice.

Thanks!
