I made this cavalry hat for a uniform I wear on civil war related events, not for reenactment or living history but what I call “history cosplaying” or “historical cosplaying” where I just go as authentic looking as I can afford, though does include a kind of fatigue blouse and trousers that reenactors wear. I heard that brass insignia was much more common and standard for hats, but was it totally non-existent in the Civil War. If it was totally non-existent, how much of a problem is my insignia by costume standards? Is it fine as it “looks” authentic for a costume of my quality level rather than that I got it at party city, or is to farby even just a costume at my quality level?
