I’ve Always Been A Critical The Offspring Fan - Ron Welty (A Drumming Aspect)
So , hear me out during Ignition, it seems like they were writing with Ron and he had some basic but classic moments. They one of featured him and wrote a Cali punk rock album,
At the same time - let’s be honest with each other - he’s no virtuoso behind the kit. But, it’s kind of Lars in Metallica - he kind of had a swing to his playing. Basic and on the nose; but the switch from the high hat to the ride and back and forth was very pure and fun to support the songs.
However - his lack of a good right foot and not doing a ton of heel toe action kind of formulated their sound to be a touch slower than the earlier stuff was. I think inadvertently - he’s helped develop a sound.
Since he left - there’s been some hits but that 90’s vibe and groove has been eliminated by better drummers and OBVIOUSLY production and the bands back and forth direction.
I guess my overall rant may summarize the following:
- Ron wasn’t a great drummer
- He got the music at the time
- however his basic playing really helped the band hit the mainstream in the 90’s because you had other punk drummers really flashing and over powering “the song” during that era.
