r/TheOffspring

Favourite guitar riff?

I love the Genocide riff. I think the solo is horrible, but I love the regular guitar part

I also love the chorus riff in So Alone, because it sounds so "miserable", perfectly fitting the song.

Rare Offspring Bad Habit eBay Listing

I found this on eBay and it looks really cool, but I don't know if it is really worth it or how rare it really is, does anyone know any information on this album?

I’ve Always Been A Critical The Offspring Fan - Ron Welty (A Drumming Aspect)

So , hear me out during Ignition, it seems like they were writing with Ron and he had some basic but classic moments. They one of featured him and wrote a Cali punk rock album,

At the same time - let’s be honest with each other - he’s no virtuoso behind the kit. But, it’s kind of Lars in Metallica - he kind of had a swing to his playing. Basic and on the nose; but the switch from the high hat to the ride and back and forth was very pure and fun to support the songs.

However - his lack of a good right foot and not doing a ton of heel toe action kind of formulated their sound to be a touch slower than the earlier stuff was. I think inadvertently - he’s helped develop a sound.

Since he left - there’s been some hits but that 90’s vibe and groove has been eliminated by better drummers and OBVIOUSLY production and the bands back and forth direction.

I guess my overall rant may summarize the following:
- Ron wasn’t a great drummer
- He got the music at the time
- however his basic playing really helped the band hit the mainstream in the 90’s because you had other punk drummers really flashing and over powering “the song” during that era.

I have a hard time enjoying “Smash” (song) anymore

I’ve felt this way a while actually.

The lyrics are just too deliberately for someone who’s like in high school or college. You can try to take it as a general assertion of individuality, but for me, the concepts of “fitting in” and “trendy” just doesn’t seem to have any relevance after you’ve graduated college (and even that’s pushing it).

I have a high opinion of this band and they will always be a favorite, but this is how I feel.

Musically, it’s pretty good too, so it’s a shame. I can rock out to it a little and just not focus on the lyrics, but it’s just not the same.

When I was like 17, it was this epic end to an epic album. Now it’s just slightly embarrassing.

Crystal Palace concert

3 of my favourite bands when I was a kid together on stage. Noodles joining Bro Hymn, Dexter's vocals being the best I've heard them and a great set list.

That was so good

Crystal Palace was awesome, as expected. Epic day out, all the bands were phenomenal AND Walla Walla 🖤🔥⚡️

Just that really, I had an amazing day out with my family.... Kids loved them too and a couple of surprises. Noodles jamming bro hymn with Pennywise was brilliant. First time seeing Pennywise so dream come true..... so much doubt and negativity sometimes towards the setlist and production but it was really such a fun day out. Top top level. Just getting outta there was a compete bitch. So horrible, the exits and process and transport links are inadequate really. Anyways screw that..... Walla walla, hell yeah 🖤🔥⚡️

Offspring gigs and critique

I've seen Offspring twice now this summer and I've seen a lot of critique here about the covers and stage presence and everything else.

I just wanted to say that both the shows I was at the crowd was super energetic and clearly people enjoyed the band. A lot of non-fans I've talked to during the festivals have stated that they didn't really know what to expect but the show blew their minds.

So yeah. Even if a lot of people here dislike their shows in my experience that's only a small portion and mostly they've been super well liked.

Just my thoughts.

Merch

Was anyone else disappointed at the merch? Or was I too late and all the good stuff had gone! There was plenty of offspring stuff but I didn’t see any pennywise merch and only 2 dropkick tees. The black spirit of 96 dropkick tee was nice but I really wanted a pennywise tee. Anyone snag one early on or was there just none at all? Good day out on the whole though, barring a few venue issues that I won’t go into as it’s already been covered!

What’s happened ?

Just watching their hellfest set
offspring now they talk to the crowd like they’re at a kids party!
Bad habit stopped half way through started chatting then carried on for the best bit and it killed the mood completely.
Sorry to moan. Love offspring and appreciate they’ve done a million gigs but I’m so disappointed now

For the love of god, when will the covers stop?!

Look, I get it, the band enjoy playing covers, but when you have an extensive discography and dedicated fan base, maybe play some deep cuts instead of a Taylor Swift cover?

It’s insulting to pay a lot of money for tickets, and see four covers in the setlist. Snippets or not, throw a quick oldie in there or something.

Crystal Palace Park Entrance

Does anyone know if there are specific entry points for the gig today?

Will be either public transport or Uber there and want it avoid arriving at the worst place possible and having to walk round the perimeter!

Cover songs you actually see them pulling off?

Hey, we all know the deal. Being a fan of this band ain't easy, it's like constantly landing between seats, sort of vibing with punk shit, pop-punk shit, 90s angst and sometimes sloppy arena boomer rock shit, while not fitting into either of these categories when you put 'em on and try to explain to people why they actually are a great band, and swallowing an amount of cringefire hotter than a bottle of Gringo Bandito (at least we can proudly say Dex was riding that stupid self-indulged trend way before it became a popular one) every now and then when it comes to some of their executive decisions - the worst of these as of late being about 30 percent of their gigs them doing random ass covers none of us care about.

I'm just expanding on the title here, really, you know what I'm asking. My personal nomination, while being realistic, thinking of obnoxious tracks they would probably enjoy playing is SHAKE IT OFF - seeing Taylor Swift popping up in 'spring posts I was thinking "YES! They finally did it! Perfect! Fuck yeah!" only to find out nah, they went for some other random algorithm-bait crapola track instead of the obvious choice. I mean call me biased, I'm not familiar with the TS discography, I'm definitely not a fan, and I do think the whole swiftie movement will eventually be looked back on as an embarrassing pop-culture snapshot akin to like boy bands, Britney copycats, or like the 90s/early 2000s SoCal radio-friendly punk stuff... not like any of us could relate to that latter one, clearly.

Anyway, here's an actual banging cover of Shake It Off with a bit off a pop-punk edge, but in the way we like it - hard, almost metal riffs contrasted against catchy high-end, almost falsetto vocals... you know where I'm getting with this, check it out if you're bored:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd1Lq_QBwxI

TL;DR: any current day dime a dozen pop tune you see them covering that could actually work? Any classics that you think could suit them? Anything on a somewhat less realistic wishlist?

PS.: don't get my moaning or any other naysaers bring you down if you're a fan and/or about to check out a gig. They are fun, if you happen to be in Canada you might be in for a good surprise, apparently, but seriously, if you're considering seeing them for the first time, go for it, you won't regret it, this is more of a boomer oldtimer never-satisfied fan moaning trip. We're all fans wishing the best for them, hoping that some of these days something clicks and they realize their full potential and live up to it. Go see them live though, if you can, they deserve that much.
