Post-IR Transition: How do we handle the remnants of the regime, IRGC loyalists, and ideological hardliners?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking at this from a constitutionalist perspective and wanted to get the community's thoughts on a specific post-regime scenario.

Hypothetically, if external pressures (such as escalating military tensions involving the US/Israel) or internal uprisings finally cause the Islamic Republic to collapse, leading to a transitional government, what happens to the domestic population that currently supports the regime?

We know that the vast majority of the new generation (Gen Z) and the wider Iranian public are fiercely anti-regime, leaning heavily toward democracy or a restoration of the constitutional monarchy (Pahlavi). However, the regime still maintains a core base of hardliners, IRGC loyalists, and ideological supporters of Khomeonism/Khamenei.

If the IR is completely toppled, I'm curious about the internal dynamics of Iran's population:

  • The Regime's Base: Where do the die-hard IR supporters and ideologues go? Do you think they would attempt to integrate into a new society, or would they face systematic de-radicalization?
  • Insurgency Risks: Is there a realistic threat of a domestic, pro-regime insurgency or asymmetric warfare within Iran's borders once the centralized power is gone?
  • Social Cohesion: How does the new democratic/constitutionalist generation handle the transition and reconciliation with families or individuals who remained loyal to the dictatorship until the very end?

I want to keep this focused strictly on the internal future of Iran and its people, rather than regional geopolitics. How do we transition into a stable post-regime future without letting the remnants of the IR destabilize the country?

Would love to hear your thoughts and analytical perspectives in the comments.
