Och Around The Clock: pre Chewin The Fat Jack and Victor from early 1998

Jack and Victor appear in linking scenes in this early 1998 documentary about Scottish pop music, in what I reckon could be their first appearance in close to their final form: (I don’t really count the earlier Pulp Video versions: they don’t have the same names, plus they look and sound too different).

Hot take: Pete didn’t mature much as a person, the character just became funnier

People say Pete has this redemption arc and improves as a person significantly by the end of the show, but tbh his later enlightened persona still seems pretty shallow and performative to me (example: the Martin Luther King speech, which comes off as very ‘look how right on I am everybody’ to me). No, I think the reason we love Pete by the end is they leaned into the appealing comedic aspects of his character and gave him some of the best lines of the show (‘oceanic limbo’ and ‘not good’ for instance) : he’s likeable by virtue of being a hugely entertaining presence. But the actual character hasn’t been really improved significantly in terms of morality or values by the end.

Shug meets the Beatles 1964

This clip is more famous online because fans allege McCartney is covering up his strauner throughout. Also it’s not the easiest watch as it keeps cutting out as not all the footage is available. However persist through those distractions and Still Game fans will be rewarded with the sight of a very ‘young’ Paul Young AKA Shug the Lug interviewing George and Ringo

This casting is so perfect it’s hard to believe it wasn’t an intentional parallel when characters were originally conceived

Why doesn’t Chris set himself up as a painter and decorator full time?

He’s clearly much more talented and skilled at that than he is at being a postie. Also he’d be his own boss and could stand to make more money.

Why is Tam respected more that Boaby in the group?

Boaby is called black hearted and a Wanker/prick etc but in fact he more often than not is fairly generous in his behaviour to the others, even if he can be somewhat smug. Tam meanwhile is more often than not entirely selfish and cold in his behaviour to the others and is to me much more the dictionary definition of a ‘prick’. And yet Tam seems to get a free pass from more deserved abuse. Is it just an age thing, the others look down on Boaby more cos to them he’s still junior/Tam is respected cos he’s part of the ‘old gang’?

Think about it: Nether Zone is the only episode that ends with a ‘lose’ for Mark. All 5 other episodes end with Mark winning’. It’s quite noticeable when you look at it in the context of the entire show where the majority of episodes end with Mark humiliated or broken in some way. So was this just a coincidence or a conscious effort to go easy on Mark for one season?
