Experimenting with power carving for the first time. Floral design inspired by traditional Tapa patterns.
Thought the community might appreciate the process and provide feedback on my first carving project...
Used some scrap pine 1"x 8" boards ripped to 5".
Not great at free hand, so I made a template inspired by tapa floral patterns with cardboard and spray painted the stencil prior to carving.
Router was running at a low RPM with a 60 degree V groove bit, about 1/4 in depth. Next time I will try to carve deeper and with more confidence but I felt like my router was going to explode.
Two pieces of wood burned nicely; the other one was from different stock and got absolutely incinerated.
Scraped the char lightly with a wire brush and several passes with steel wool.
Not sure if staining with such a dark color was a good idea, but it made the colors consistent with the super burnt panel.
Finished with 2 layers of polyurethane since it is a high traffic and touch area.
Overall fun weekend experience and transformed a boring doorway.
