Huli Huli downtown Columbus now open

Huli Huli in Columbus expanded to a new, second location in downtown Columbus. Yesterday was the first public opening day and I happened to be in town.

I’m not from the area but from what I understand it replaces a former bar.

If you’ve been to the Powell location you would know what to expect yet things are a tiny different. Noticed Mai Tai uses different rums vs Powell, downtown has a …- while Powell doesn’t. Maybe plan will be to streamline between the two but I do like the fact there are some differences. Menu in the photos.

I went at night, but similar to Powell, there are windows so less super dark speak easy vibe and more tropical meets tiki. They had Hawaiian albums plastered all behind the bar and even caught a Rancid steel drum cover playing (which was awesome).

Did go to the Powell location for the first time the night before and enjoyed it. Food was awesome (highly recommend tiki fries!). Indoor section was closed which was a little bit of a bummer but the patio had a great vibe and weather was perfect so can’t complain at all.

What’s your favorite cocktail to use Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple Rum? Thanks in advance!

Aldi Pre-Mixed “Mai Tai” Mocktail

Found these at Aldi. Honestly, I’m kinda surprised how much I liked it?

You’re first it with an orange-pineapple soda flavor (I know, pineapple should not be in a Mai Tai). Then you actually get some lime and almond flavor in the back.

It’s not too sugary, right about where a good Mai Tai should be. There’s no rum substitute, which is probably for the best since those are never great IMO. Could you throw this in a glass with some dark Jamaican rum? Probably.

North Carolina Tiki

Hey all, I recently started getting into tiki culture and was wondering if there are any good tiki bars in this state or the surrounding ones. I’ve already been to a few in the surrounding states, including Trader Vic’s Atlanta.

Adding mango to the rum: Infusion tips needed.

My grocery store is having a pretty good sale on mangoes this weekend and I thought it'd be fun to infuse a bottle of rum with them. To that end, any advice on doing so would be appreciated as I haven't done fruit infusions before. Is there a huge difference between using yellow mangoes vs red mangoes? Preferred rums? I was considering grabbing a bottle of Wray & Nephew for this. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

A night at the House of Bamboo

Finally made my way up to Camarillo and checked out the house of bamboo.

The owner had a nice chat with us as we waited for our table to become available and told us all about the history of the bars creation.

His grandfather was a scout aboard the b-52 Rum Hound in WW2. Unfortunately his plane was shot down over the pacific and they crashed in the water near a tropical island, where a tribe of head hunters took them in.

They lived in make shift structures they could make with what was available, bamboo. And they referred to them as the house of bamboo.

The bar is filled with wonderful artifacts, art, and of course some amazing little light shows! One such show even has you serenaded by a blow fish!

The drinks and bartenders were great. Highly recommend checking it out if you can!

Drink advice needed.

Might any one of you be able to give me a close approximation on how to make this? I've seen photos of it in "3 dots and a dash" promotional imagery. The foam layer on top looks enchanting. I can't get to Chicago though so I need the next best solution. Thank you in advance for any and all info.

Tiki adjacent Cinema! What are your favorite Tiki adjacent films and TV?

One of the last travel adventure films shot with the three camera setup meant for specialized theaters with a curved screen. This was an internet find. Didn't know it was narrated by Orson Welles till I watch the trailer the other day. I recently realized that watching films as a kid like Disneys 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and tv shows like Gilligan's Island, would somehow influence My love of adventure, both in cinema and in life. All that leading to fascination with Tiki and Polynesian Pop.

What are some of your favorite Tiki adjacent films and television?

EDIT: I believe Don the Beachcomber makes an appearance in this film. It could also mean his restaurant makes an and appearance in the movie

A real Rum Runner at the bar that invented it - Tiki adjacent

Perhaps not Tiki in the classic sense, but I had plenty of fun weekends at the "World Famous" Tiki Bar in Islamorada since the 1980s. Wickliffe's book describes the bartender who invented the drink in the 1970s by pouring whatever he had left on his shelf together and voila we have the Rum Runner. I'm happy to report that, even though the bar has changed hands 100 times, they still made my drink by hand using every correct liqueur. It was perfect!

Experimenting with power carving for the first time. Floral design inspired by traditional Tapa patterns.

Thought the community might appreciate the process and provide feedback on my first carving project...

Used some scrap pine 1"x 8" boards ripped to 5".

Not great at free hand, so I made a template inspired by tapa floral patterns with cardboard and spray painted the stencil prior to carving.

Router was running at a low RPM with a 60 degree V groove bit, about 1/4 in depth. Next time I will try to carve deeper and with more confidence but I felt like my router was going to explode.

Two pieces of wood burned nicely; the other one was from different stock and got absolutely incinerated.

Scraped the char lightly with a wire brush and several passes with steel wool.

Not sure if staining with such a dark color was a good idea, but it made the colors consistent with the super burnt panel.

Finished with 2 layers of polyurethane since it is a high traffic and touch area.

Overall fun weekend experience and transformed a boring doorway.

Vacation blend

Going on a short holliday with the family and they all do like it when i make cocktails. I want to create a few different cocktails but not bring along a dozen of bottles so i decided to make this vacation blend:

300 ml doorly

30 ml Appleton

200 ml stiggings

100 ml smith and cross

100 ml wray and nephew.

I just mixed it together and will let it rest now. I did do a quick taste and smell test. The wray is hitting you first thing but then the others also come through.

Really curious how this will turn out in two days.

And then i only need to get some small bottles to bring along the falernum, orgeat, triple sec, allspice dram, syrups......... so still a lot of bottles but less then if i would have needed to bring along all the individual rum ones!
