Grog Concentrate -- What Else Besides Tropical Standard Navy Grog?

Making this syrup now. Mixture of Cola, sugar, and allspice berries.

The Navy Grog is a definite.

Where else would this work well?

Thanks

Favorite Frozen Tiki Drinks

Heat wave in MA. Thirsty for some frozen tiki drinks today. I rarely take out the blender, but I'm feeling the need.

No flash blending today.

What are your favorites to stick in a blender full of ice on a 90+ degree day?

Liber Toasted Coconut Syrup

Needed some liber orgeat and decided to buy their new updated toasted coconut syrup for laughs. No particular reason why. Figured I'd give it a shot.

Usually have REAL coconut cream on hand and also have Planteray Cut N Dry so have some other coconut stuff in the arsenal.

Anything worth trying immediately with this toasted coconut syrup?

Painkiller seems too obvious. Maybe a daiquiri with my Planteray Cut N Dry and Stiggins pineapple? Other?

Thanks

Creme De Peche

Just picked it up. Don't think I've ever had a peach tiki drink.

The three cocktails I keep running into:

Missionary's Downfall.

Aku Aku

Peachtree Punch

Any others worth diving into?

Thanks

Mezcal & Tiki

I love a "smokey" drink and have my eye on mixing up some mezcal / ginger tiki drinks. Oddly, I know a whole lot of nothing about decent, readily available mezcal.

Thinking what would be above average brands, in the $30-$35 bottle area that works best in mixing. For example, what's the mezcal equivalent of say...Appleton 8 or 12.

Now dreaming of a rum penicillin...

Thanks!

Summer Suit Advice

Never wear suits anymore. Have more of a winter suit although not sure it fits anymore. Have a funeral this weekend and I'm looking for more of a summer suit or a jacket and pants I can wear with no tie. Getting hot. Want something I can wear this weekend but also elsewhere if necessary.

58 year old M. 6 '2, about 195.

I have J. Crew and Banana pretty close to me. I guess I could also mix and match a blazer with decent pants.

Macadamia Nut Liqueur - Homemade!

Macadamia Nut Liqueur!

Since I can't find Trader Vic's Macadamia Nut liqueur anywhere in the Boston area, I decided to make my own.

While there's a number of cocktails that I've got my eye on -- Macadamia Nut Chi Chi, Nutty Ocho Rios, Headhunter King, Stumblebum -- I'd like to start with something simple and with rums that play the best with Macadamia Nut Liqueur.

Any thoughts here?

I've got a pretty good arsenal:

  • Hamilton: 151, Still Pot, Navy Strength, 86
  • Appleton 12, Estate
  • Probitas
  • Rumfire, Wray & Nephew
  • Planteray OFTD, Xaymaca, 5, 3
  • Denizen 8
  • Clement Rhum Agricole

Flavored: Planteray Stiggins, Planteray Cut & Dry, Siesta Key Coconuts

Thinking a split base rum grog or daiquiri or old fashioned, or maybe even a mai tai that plays best with this macadamia nut flavor.

Thanks in advance for any recos. Can't wait till this damn thing finishes filtering through the coffee filter!

How Cringe Are Tank Tops In The Summer?

Curious what other dudes think of other dudes wearing tank tops in the summer?

I'm going to be 58 in a week and quite frankly, I don't care. When it's 90 out, I like to be cool.

My wife hates them.

This would be purely when it's super hot and if you're hanging out in a beachy type area for the day.

Can't wait to see the responses for this one.

Madagascar Vanilla Syrup and...Raspberry Gum Syrup?

Vanilla...and Raspberry?

So I ran out of my homemade vanilla syrup. Didn't feel like making any but saw that Libor had a sale for their Madagascar Vanilla Syrup. Figured I'd give that a shot. While there...and for no real reason...I also put their Raspberry Gum Syrup.

Are there any tiki cocktails that use the two of them together???

I know there are tons of uses for vanilla (which is why I usually make my own syrup). Nui Nui, Navy Grog, Expedition/anything with coffee come to mind. But both raspberry and vanilla? Or hell, raspberry alone.

Looking forward to giving these two syrups a shot all holiday weekend.

Thanks!

Don's Spices...In The Mood For Grapefruit and Cinny.

Woke up with a thirst for this dynamite combo.

Ideally want to finish off my El Dorado 12 with this (maybe a Donga Punch but with ED 12) and then move to some more complex ideas that build off this.

Maybe a Bush Pilot after that for #2?

And then move to a 1956 Zombie for #3? (Yes, three cocktails tonight...it's going to be a good Thursday night).

Any other favorites you have stored as Don Spice favorites?

Thanks in advance!

The Dark Forest...not finished, but...what?

Watched the 30 episodes of the Chinese version of Three Body. Didn't read the first book. Was excited to read the Dark Forest before the next TV series gets out.

Love, love this book...up until the point of hibernation. Then Lou Ji wakes up...and it seems like suddenly earth has the upper hand over the Trisolarans?

Without spoiling, I'm hoping that there are a few more twists and turns here that make this a fight.

Please tell me I'm about to be super pleased.

The Hurricane -- Can't Believe I Haven't Made This Yet!

Oddly enough, a year into this hobby and I've never made a Hurricane. Had a couple down in NOs a few years ago. Don't remember being a fan. Have a feeling there was too much junk in there making it too sweet. Also not a huge fan of passion fruit syrup.

All that said, thinking of doing a test to start. The classic version vs. a bit of a split:

1) Classic Version Hurricane

1.0 Appleton 12

1.0 Hamilton 114 Navy Strength Rum

1.0 Passion Fruit

1.0 Lemon

2) Hurricane Variant

1.0 Appleton 12

1.0 Hamilton 114 Navy

0.5 Passion Fruit

0.5 Red Fassionola

0.5 Lemon

0.5 Lime

If I'm still conscience, may want to give an oddball version a shot. I've seen some different versions that include the Mai Kai Hurricane (includes honey syrup, orange, Pernod), Hurricane Dorian (includes ginger syrup, orange), and Kevin Grossman's version...which looks crazy...and includes Circus Peanut Syrup (which I just purchased).

Any favorite variants?

Today's the day I find out if I"m into this one.

Thanks

Have about 8 ounces of this stuff in the freezer. Smells great.

Any recos for what cocktails I should make with this?

Thinking to start:

  1. Rum Old Fashioned

  2. Maybe a riff on the above but with 0.5 ounce of banana liqueur to make a banana bread old fashioned

Open to ideas!

As an aside, digging into my bacon fat washed bourbon tonight. Tmrw may have to go with a fat washed competition -- Bacon fat washed bourbon vs. brown butter fat washed rum!

Thanks!

Quick question on fat washing: Looking to do a brown butter fat washing into some rum. What is the ratio of rum to butter?

1 tablespoon of butter to every four ounces of rum?

Also, what rum would really work best here? I have a ton of rum, but probably don't want to go too high end here especially if I screw it up. Have a bottle of Appleton Estate (and would rather save my Appleton 12).

Dreaming of a rum old fashioned with maybe some Giffard Banana.

Thanks!

My trip to Burlington Wine & Spirits provided me my first bottle of Hampden Rum Fire. Never had this in a cocktail before. I feel compelled to have a Rum Firewalker later today, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Campari. I think I tried this before with W & N and felt it was ok. I don't want to throw 3 ounces of Rum Fire down the drain. Maybe I use 0.75 Campari instead of a full ounce? Or maybe replace with Aperol?

Outside of the Rum Firewalker, where does Rum Fire shine?

Couple thoughts come to mind:

Simple Daiquiri

Disco Banana

Anything else?

Probably prefer something simple so I can really taste the Rum Fire and why this rum is so special.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Was "clowing around" with the idea of going down the peanut butter rabbit hole either using Skrewball whiskey or fat washing. I somehow stumbled on this syrup from BJ Reynolds. I guess this was at some point discontinued, but it's actually available on the BJ Reynolds website.

Can I ask...what does this taste like? Sweet? Overwhelming PB?

Curious on this.

I'm STUNNED with how many recipes there are from Jason Alexander and Nathan Robinson. This syrup seems to have a cult following or something.

May have to buy a couple bottles and go nuts with this stuff this weekend.

Thanks
