48” chest, 34” waist and a non negotiable suit size

My brother is getting married in the UK in August.

I live on the other side of the Atlantic, and as one of two Best Men (me and our other brother) he has picked a suit from a UK retailer/online for us to wear. It’s Reiss if anybody is curious.

As the title says, I have just over a 48 inch chest at 5’11. Looking on their website, the suit jacket in question is sold out in that size, and speaking to customer service it’s not coming back into stock any time soon.

So! Do I buy the 46R, throw myself on the mercy of a tailor, or do I stop eating last month and hope it fits by August?

For context, I swim 4-5 times a week, am pretty active already and am shaped like a Y. Of course, I can always be in better shape, but not sure which direction to take.

Thank you all in advance, you beautiful and well accessorized chaps.

How do you find stylish men's clothing brands?

I don't mean this in like the general sort of way. I mean how do YOU specifically like to discover new brands? I've lurked on this sub for awhile and l've seen plenty of threads about brand recs and I've tried a few of the most common ones I see but I want to expand beyond that. I have a tough time trusting influencers because I feel like they're always peddling their own stuff and theres so much dropshipping going on nowadays that I don't want to just buy from some completely random no name brand either. Would love some discoverability tips from you guys.

What to wear as a very skinny guy

I'm 25M, 5'8, 120 lbs. I've never managed to find clothes that make me look good. I'm going shopping this weekend to completely change my wardrobe and I'm looking for advice.

European sportcoat brand

European high quality brand for sportjackets etc? Right now I’m looking at Oscar Jacobsen and I quite like their styles.

I don’t really bother with the brand just that it’s high quality.

M24. 207 cm. 95-100kg.

why do some people look aweful in other clothes and some dont ?

for example I dont look good in silk pointelle or any of those see through button shirt but can work with certain camp collar shirt

same with certain shoes/sneakers. same can be said for different colors. same can be said for berets, fedora, dad hats, etc

and then there's people who can rock ANYTHING. Like dad shoes, chunky shoes, flats, bomber jacket, puffer jacket, etc what explains this?

Quince - any experience with their basics?

I've heard podcast ads about this site for ages and they just started shipping to my country (Canada).

Was surprised to find they've never been mentioned in this sub. They have a bunch of decent looking men's linen and other nice natural fibre stuff. Anyone have any experience with them?

(Not a sponsored post or anything, feel free to browse my profile history!)

Banana Republic in 2026

The wife and I have been digesting some industry insights from Iron Snail, Shift fashion, and a few others. And Banana Republic had always been a brand that offered solid basics with what seems to be an ever sliding scale of quality and materials. It tends to be our go to for staples with quality natural materials and construction.

We went by a store with the spring/summer update. Loads of linen and high quality cottons.

The growth in heritage wear and solid basics from start up or heritage brands seems to be putting pressure on BR.

This year vs last year there's a marked difference in the quality of the materials, construction methods, etc across the board.

Still a bit pricey at MSRP, but a solid deal on sale IMO.

The luxury weight tees are particularly nice. Bought two and I find myself wearing them more than others unless it's really hot out.

Leads me to a final thought, I do think some industry sizing is shifting. Starting to notice tees being a bit roomier with some recent purchases. Rises are getting a bit longer in pants.

Leaning more about materials and construction has been incredibly helpful. Fabric weight, treatments, seam types, reinforcement, helps to know more about the value of what you're buying.

I spent way too long researching the history of the penny loafer and here's what I found — from Norwegian cowsheds to JFK

I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out why the most casual dress shoe in my closet is called a "penny loafer" and ended up writing this. Figured I'd share since I haven't seen a good loafer history post here in a while.

**It started in a Norwegian fjord.**

In the early 1900s, fishermen and farmers in Aurland, Norway wore a slip-on leather shoe called the "Teser" — basically a moccasin for milking cattle. No laces, no fuss. British sportsmen spotted them on salmon-fishing trips and brought the idea back to London.

**Then it crossed the Atlantic by accident.**

In 1935, an Esquire magazine editor noticed the Norwegian shoes showing up in Palm Beach. He partnered with G.H. Bass in Maine to make an American version. Bass reportedly called it "a house slipper to be worn outdoors" but agreed to produce it anyway. He added a leather strap with a diamond-shaped cutout across the vamp and named it the "Weejun" — short for Norwegian.

First Weejun ad ran in the NY Herald Tribune, May 27, 1936.

**The penny thing.**

Ivy League students adopted the Weejun in the late 30s-50s. Legend says they tucked a penny into the saddle strap — either for luck or for emergency payphone calls. True or not, the name stuck.

James Dean wore them with jeans. JFK wore them with chinos. The loafer became the only shoe in menswear that could mean "rebel" and "president" simultaneously.

**The family branched out:**

**Penny loafer** — the original. Leather strap, diamond slot, no hardware.

**Tassel loafer** — 1940s. Born from a miscommunication between an American actor and his London bootmaker. The actor wanted dangling laces. The bootmaker made something better.

**Horsebit loafer** — 1950s Florence. Equestrian hardware across the vamp. Turned a casual shoe into a luxury object.

**Belgian loafer** — the quietest version. Barely more than a slipper with a tiny bow.

**Why it lasted 90 years:**

The slip-on construction makes it the easiest shoe to put on. Convenience is the most powerful force in a wardrobe. The shoe you can step into without thinking is the shoe you wear 200 days a year.

No other dress shoe spans the range of a loafer — it works with a suit and with shorts. That's not versatility by design. It's versatility by accident, which is why it feels effortless.

Happy to answer any questions about loafer types, materials, or construction if anyone's curious.

Pet Peeve: People Don't Iron Their Pleated or Dress Pants

Does anyone else get REALLY/somewhat annoyed when you see someone with pleated pants that look really good on them but they've neglected to iron their pants and have the proper line with the pleat/the line in the first place?

Need to get some XL relaxed or regular shirts after gaining a lot of weight last year

I’m on a big weight loss journey because I had a real rough year last year and gained lot of weight and I rarely go out or do much except work but I’m changing some things around in my life and adding diet and gym to it but in meantime I want to get like 2-3 XL shirts that are relaxed or just not slim. Lot of non slim shirts naturally are tight in belly area. Like I said I’m planning on cutting down a lot but it’s not gonna happen quick and I need some clothing in meantime. Basic question I know but really haven’t shopped for shirts in a while

How do you guys know where to buy good clothes from?

Whenever I see people wearing good shirts, cargos, oversized tees, sneakers etc. they already know good brands, websites, stores and hidden finds while I barely know where to shop from.

How did you guys build your fashion/clothing knowledge?

Any apps, websites, YouTubers, Instagram pages or general tips?

Jacket too small? Navy or Black?Suit Supply

Recently bought a suit from suit supply and had it altered at the store. It was shopped back to me, but I’m thinking it’s too tight around the waist. Thoughts? I don’t plan to button it very often, but when I need to, I don’t want to look like an idiot.

Side note—the suit is supposed to he navy, and looked navy in store. But this look near-black to me. Thoughts on this too?

Any help is much appreciated!

Baggier jeans for adults?

the baggier style came back not too long ago, and I like it. I’m a 37 year old male who grew up as a skateboarder, and I still hold some of that style today, wear mostly vans and chucks.

Where, as an adult, can I get some baggier jeans? nothing crazy like some of the young kids are wearing. I just have no idea where to look because for the last 21 years I’ve worn skinny jeans.

What do we think about overcoats/topcoats in the summer?

I know this sounds absolutely insane, but I think an overcoat/topcoat can be a summer wardrobe staple. I have this acacia/camel coloured Old Navy polyester topcoat that I've started wearing over my white linen button-down short-sleeve and double-pleated khakis and it's kind of an cool look. The other overcoats/topcoats I have also pair quite well with them. I have a grey/ash coloured one also from old navy that could be nice, as well as an black H&M one that's 50% wool that I'll probably reserve for the evening.

Also, just want to provide some context, I am someone who gets cold VERY easily, during the very very mild winter (it pretty much never gets to freezing temps) where I live, I easily will wear 5 or 6 layers.

Reiss?

I‘d never heard of it before but popped into a boutique and dig the styling. Is it good quality? Would you consider it like Banana Republic in quality? Seems like a step up from Zara, etc.

Why is it hard to find common Brands that sell high rise chinos or dress pants for men

Im looking for common brands that you can find in malls or international stores, that sell dress pants (I consider dress pants anything thats not jeans) that are high rise.

Most of the ones i find sit too low and make my legs look too short, and as a short guy with short legs, the look is awful. There is a trend in social media for higher rise ones, but when i go to stores, i only find low rise. If i do find high rise they are some weird fabric that is too thin and casual.

It could be from zara, banana republic, or any store that can be found internationally.

Any recomendations ?

Thoughts on polo shirts / rugby shirts?

I have a few polos and rugby shirts that I wear. I noticed on this sub in particular there seems like a lot of hate for polo shirts, but often without any further explanation. Am I making a fashion faux pas wearing a polo?

I don’t mind looking like I’ve stepped off the golf course but I don’t want to look like I’m here to clean your pool. In my 40’s if that makes a difference.
