The Bolton branch closed in 2011, but there's still an active Legion in Alton.

Happy belated fiftieth birthday to the CN Tower, opened in 1976.

Yesterday was the official fiftieth anniversary of the CN Tower.

Look up the tower, beyond the main public floors, and a couple storeys above that, the SkyWalk. Eventually there’s a “radome,” a little donut covering the broadcast television and radio signal equipment.

In October 1974, Sky Hook Construction Limited (then 26 Holtby Avenue) was informed that they had won the bid to install the antennas and transmission apparatus in this section, according to The Guardian at the time. They also installed the 5 foot by 10 foot plastic panels covering that portion.

The radome’s shape and glossy surface was designed to shed ice before it accumulated too much, so that there wasn’t danger on the ground.

Installation went from roughly April to December, 1975. The only reported hiccup was when welding sparks halfway up the tower caused a fire, and one of Sky Hook’s employees was overcome with smoke, but was fit to return to work later the same day.

As of 1975, Sky Hook had offices in Brampton, Windsor, Truro, and Winnipeg. Weirdly, despite going from sales of $200,000 in 1964 to $3-4 million in 1975, and employing 70 people nationally by that point, there's no more mention of Sky Hook in major Canadian newspapers after 1976. We'd need to pull out the old phone books to see when it came and went from Brampton.

There was a one-off Flower Festival in Brampton in 1958, held in partnership with the Toronto Telegram newspaper, Rotary Club of Brampton, and Dale Estate, and surely other similar events previous, but the actual Brampton Flower Festival Association was created in 1963.

Notice the trees behind them, this is just a little east of what's now Walmart, closer to Hurontario.

Lots of the edge areas of Brampton were agricultural land until recent decades, for instance a lot of apple orchards and strawberry fields in the west end had "pick your own" formats.

Up at Highway 7 and Highway 10 (Bovaird and Hurontario), few remember the dough fields. They were like rice paddy fields, but instead of being flooded with water, they were flooded with oil, heated by natural geothermal vents in that area.

They were sold fresh from those fields, farm to table, at the DONUT ꟻARM.
