The character the showrunners have created is one of the most tragically compelling fictional characters of the decade to the point he honestly kind of carries the show. Everything they’ve done with him up until this point has been a very logical progression of his character.

At first in s5, I even thought they jumped the gun too quickly on the “god” angle, but after rewatching some early season clips on YouTube, and I noticed he always had the same attitude about anything relating to Christianity. Even the way he says “the lord” is delivered in a sarcastic, dismissive manner. He always compared Supes to gods.

So him coming to see himself as god as his grip on reality fall apart and revealing a pathetic man child, isn’t really anything out of left field.

No Sense of Danger

Back in s1, everyone was shitting their pants when homelander flew in looking for translucent. The boys had to execute an elaborate plan just to evade him.

But by s5, when it’s literally suppose to be the endgame with stakes as high as it’s ever been, there is no sense of dread when homelander is standing next to ANY of the boys. You know they’re just going to have a chat, and then go their seperate ways.

We’ve had not one, but TWO instances of the boys shooting guns, beating the fuck out of each other, shouting and swearing at the top of their lungs literally in the SAME building as homelander without him suspecting a single thing. Even hughie, a 6’1 grown ass man can literally wriggle his way out of vents to escape homelander like some Scooby doo shit.

Refusing to change Status Quo

There’s a reason why so many people just want homelander to start wrecking shit. We’re just desperate for anything because the writers just don’t have homelander actually do anything anymore.

Homelander not really giving a shit about the boys enough to make an effort to go after them made sense in the early seasons when they were literal nobodies, but by this point they have been the primary roadblock against homelander in achieving his plans. He can literally recognise their scents from how much he’s ran into them, why is he not doing anything about it.

The show has been teasing homelander reaching his breaking point and going all out since the first season. And now we’re in the endgame with 3 episodes left in final season, and still teasing the same fucking thing.

Final thoughts

I notice a lot of Redditors say “well he’s pathetic so that’s why” as a counter point. But I’m not sure why being pathetic and this has to be mutually exclusive? Joffrey Baratheon from game of thrones is a great example of a pathetic but scary character. And eve then, most of this doesn’t even have anything to do with him being an insecure man baby, it’s more so lazy writing from all the plot armour.

Saying this, I still love homelander’s character, otherwise I wouldn’t be this passionate about it. It’s just that I really hope they address these problems in the very few episodes they’ve got left in the entire story.
