Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks. Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line.

THESE PENS HAVE NO CRACKS, CHIPS, PERSONALIZATIONS, LOOSE OR MISSING PARTS, BENT NIBS, MISALIGNED TINES, BROKEN/WORN OFF TIPPING, OR THREADING ISSUES.

Line Widths and Writing Samples: To provide buyers with as much information as possible, I have adopted the following line width standards: XXF (.1-.2mm); XF (approx .3mm); F (approx .4mm); M (approx .6mm); B (approx .8mm). Nib flexibility is determined by variation (max line width under pressure) and softness (amount of pressure). Flexibility designations based on variation generally run as follows for an XF/F nib: Semi-Flex (approx. 1mm); Flex (1.2-1.9mm); Superflex (2mm+). All line width measurements are taken with a digital caliper but should be considered approximations providing a general guide. Width may vary slightly depending on type of ink and paper used as well as amount of pressure applied. All writing samples are on Rhodia dot paper using Waterman Serenity Blue or Waterman Intense Black (unless otherwise noted).

Abbreviations: BCHR = black chased hard rubber | MHR = mottled hard rubber | RHR = red hard rubber | GPT = gold-plated trim | NPT = nickel-plated trim | GFT = gold-filled trim

1. 1930s Waterman English Flat Top (green marble, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex/Superflex Stub nib). This full-sized model has a thicker girth than a #2 and measures 4 11/16” capped. I’ve listed a couple of these over the years but have never been able to track down a name or model number (these did not have number stamps on the barrel-ends). This pen was made in England (as marked) in the 1930s and carries a Canadian nib. It’s similar to the US-made 3/32, except it’s slightly thicker in girth, 1/4” shorter, sports a different lever, and has gold- rather than nickel-plated trim. It’s made of celluloid in a green pearl marble color pattern finished with black ends. 14k Waterman Ideal Canada #2 nib is a Factory Stub capable of Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes. And that line widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile variation, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for adding shading to one’s everyday writing as it is for calligraphic writing styles, the stub grind keeping one’s letterforms neat and straight. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-plated trim shows some shallow, pin-sized marks at the top of the clip and on the sides of the lever but is free of brassing or other notable flaws. Perfect color with no discoloration (these often faded to light green over the years). Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is slightly weakened in the center but otherwise deep and fully legible. Price: $250 SOLD

2. 1930s Waterman 3 (Green Pearl, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, XXF Needlepoint Superflex/Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. The 3/32 model was offered in a colorful array of celluloids at a more modest price-point than the 94 but was typically equipped with #2 series nibs no less expressive than those found on Waterman’s famous 52s. This example is made of celluloid in a color pattern Waterman called Green Pearl, consisting of vibrant flashes of bright red set against a pearlescent green marble backdrop. Nickel-plated trim in simplified Art Deco style. 14k Waterman Ideal #2 nib yields Super-Flexible variation with softness verging on that of a Wet Noodle. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under very light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, easy variation, superbly responsive snap-back (best of the batch) giving one surgically precise control over the line, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Nickel-plated trim is unusually clean with no brassing and just some microscratches on the sides and top of the clip. Perfect color with no discoloration. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel and number stamp on barrel-end are factory deep and fully legible. Price: $290 SOLD [before listing]

3. 1930s Wahl-Eversharp Gold Seal Flat Top w/ Soldier Clip (Brazilian Green, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex/Superflex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 11/16” capped. Wahl-Eversharp’s Gold Seal pens of the 1920s and 1930s are some of their most sought after, epitomizing an Art Deco style best known from the oversized Deco Band. This flat top model appeared in the same catalogues as the Deco Band and even shares the rhomboid cap band adorning Deco Bands of the same color. W-E called this color Brazilian Green: a pearlescent green marble pattern with chatoyant bronze portions. Deluxe gold-plated trim configuration with rhomboid cap band, multiple decorative bands, and Wahl’s signature roller clip. That clip is attached at the top of the pen, enabling it to ride low in the pocket in conformity with military officer uniform regulations of the period – hence the oft-used term “soldier clip.” Gold seal beneath the clip signifying W-E’s lifetime gurantee. There is also a decorative metal disk embedded in the cap’s crown (DETAIL PHOTO). 14k Wahl Signature nib yields Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. Feed is marked ‘F’ and nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: fine [C]. This pen has no terminal flaws and present well after a polish. But it does show moderate brassing: mostly to the cap bands and trim rings but also a spot on the top of the clip where it bends. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. But it does have a couple spots where the celluloid pattern has a slightly raised appearance, presumable due to the otherwise imperceptible shrinkage of the celluloid over the years (see area of cap imprint in imprints photo). Not something you’d notice unless you’re looking for it. Color itself is superb with no discoloration and no dulling of the luster of the bronze portions. Manufacturer imprint on cap is deep and fully legible. Price: $330 SOLD [before listing]

4. 1930s Wahl-Eversharp Gold Seal Flat Top (Coral, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/4” capped. Wahl-Eversharp’s Gold Seal pens were their flagships, carrying lifetime guarantees and featuring some of the most desirable celluloid color patterns they ever made. The bright reddish orange color catalogued as Coral is a case in point. Made in smaller numbers and especially prone to unsightly discoloration, Coral flat tops like this one are diamonds in the rough. This full-sized model - significantly scarcer than its smaller counterparts – features a deluxe trim configuration with W-E’s signature roller clip, double cap bands, and decorative rings on the ends. This pen features a 14k W-E Gold Seal nib marked “Flexible,” which is integrated into a Personal Point feed unit that unscrews from the section just like one of Pelikan’s or Esterbrook’s. It’s a Super-Flexible writer, laying down a smooth and consistent XXF line (despite the ‘F’ stamp on the feed) that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, strongly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+]. This pen resembles a time capsule relic. Unlike the vast majority of these, its color is superb with no discernible discoloration. Gold-plated trim is virtually pristine with no notable flaws aside from a 3mm-long sliver of brassing on the bottom edge of the lower cap band visible under a loupe situated on each side of the cap. No other brassing (note the ‘U.S.A’ stamp on the top of the clip, which can be confused with wear in photos but isn’t). Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on cap is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $480 SOLD [before listing]

5. 1930s Eversharp Doric (Morocco Pearl and Black?, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. This is a non-Gold-Seal model made of celluloid in a color pattern I’ve never seen before. The hue of the red marble resembles the Morocco Pearl color of 1st-gen Dorics but the red portions are sparcer, such that they appear to be floating against a black backdrop. Art Deco charms include a faceted barrel and cap, cap band with geometric motif, and elegantly chamfered clip and lever. 14k Eversharp nib stamped ‘Flexible’ is a Super-Flexible writer. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.1mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. Some lighter Doric colors were prone to crystallization/breakdown of the plastic. Thankfully, darker colors like this one are MUCH more stable and it’s rare to see any such issues plaguing them. I’m happy to report that there are no signs of any plastic deterioration on this pen – not on the ends or anywhere else. Gold-plated trim is clean with no notable flaws aside from high-point wear on the edges of the clip and the apex of the lever. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from some small nicks around the ‘Eversharp’ imprint on the cap. Despite this, that imprint remains deep and fully legible. An Art Deco icon in a highly unusual color and a lovely writer. Price: $370

6. 1940s Eversharp Skyline (Dubonnet Red w/ Green/Red Striated cap, polystyrene barrel and celluloid cap, GPT, lever filler, 14k F Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. Hatched from the mind of the celebrated industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, the Skyline exhibits the elegant integration of function and a streamlined style with Art Deco influences. This has a polystyrene barrel and matching section in a color Eversharp called Dubonnet Red with a striated celluloid cap in in green and bright red stripes. Gold-plated trim with one of the smartest over-the-top clip designs ever made. But what truly sets this pen apart from your typical Skyline is the nib, which is perhaps THE most flexible I’ve ever encountered on this model. That Superflex 14k Eversharp banner nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line that widens to a wildly impressive 4B++ (approx 3.0mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Incredible max line widths and reliably wet flow over its full range of flex make it an outstanding choice for calligraphic writing styles in a big, bold hand. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold plated trim is exceptionally clean with no notable flaws aside from one 1/4”-long, sliver of brassing along top left edge of the clip. Plastics have a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on clip tassie is deep and fully legible. A common pen in uncommonly good condition with a nib that’s downright rare. Price: $240 SOLD

7. 1940s Eversharp Skyline Modern Stripe (Red Moire, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/4” capped. Hatched from the mind of the celebrated industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, the Skyline exhibits the elegant integration of function and a streamlined style with Art Deco influences. Eversharp's colorful range of celluloid Skylines in patterns they dubbed "Modern Stripe" are sought after for their beauty and relative scarcity in comparison to the standard, polystyrene models. Red Moire remains the hardest Modern Stripe color to track down by a long chalk. I often receive requests from collectors who have managed to acquire all the other colors but can’t seem find this one anywhere. This is a standard-sized (not demi) model in Red moire with matching red derby, transparent ink-view window in the section for checking ink level, and military style clip. Super-Flexible 14k Skyline nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+], Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing whatsoever aside from a miniscule, 1mm sliver on the side of the lever visible only under a loupe. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the clip tassie is deep and fully legible. Price: $290 SOLD

[WTS] VINTAGE • Parker Vacumatic Senior Maxima with Superflex nib + Other Vacumatic Fillers (Firm-Superflex): Parker Vacumatic Senior Maxima in Silver Pearl, Vac Duofold Senior in Blue | Parker 51 Vac in Black w/ Sterling Cap •

This week’s vintage batch features Parker Vacumatic fillers from the 1930s-40s, including a highly uncommon Vacumatic Senior Maxima with a Superflex nib. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

Note: If you’re unable to expand album photos to full size, try opening the link in a different browser.

Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs/diaphragms installed in the last couple months. Vacumatic fillers are something of a specialty of mine and I take pride in the amount of attention I devote to each. Any dried/coagulated ink is removed from feed channels. All remnants of thread sealant and ossified diaphragms are cleaned away. Threads are meticulously chased. Interiors of barrels are cleaned and polished to remove ink staining and restore transparency. Sections are sealed against leaks using Main Street Pens' rosin-based thread sealant.

On Filling Vacumatics: Each of the pens with Vac filling systems below stores ink directly in the barrel. To fill, one simply removes the blindcap, submerses the nib, and depresses the plunger until the barrel is full (after twisting the filler to unlock it in the case of #1).

1. 1935 Parker Vacumatic Standard (Burgundy, celluloid, GPT, Vacumatic lockdown filler, 14k Two-Tone F nib). This standard-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. Price: 290 SOLD [before listing]

2. 1943 Parker Vacumatic Major (Azure Blue Pearl, celluloid, Vacumatic filler, 14k XF nib). This full-sized 3rd-generation model measures 5 3/16” capped. Price: $240 SOLD [before listing]

3. c.1939-40 Parker Vacumatic Senior Maxima (Silver Pearl, celluloid, NPT, Vacumatic Speedline filler, 14k Two-Tone Superflex XF nib). This oversized 2nd-generation model has a thick girth and measures 5 3/8” capped. The Senior Maxima was the king of the Vacs and is much tougher to come by today than are smaller models. This example is made of celluloid in the Silver Pearl color pattern with transparent striations in the barrel for viewing the ink level. Chevron cap band, double striped jewels (see album photo), aluminum Speedline filler, and blue diamond clip signifying Parker’s lifetime guarantee. But what makes this pen downright rare is the nib. The overwhelming majority of Vacs came from the factory with rigid nibs. But this one carries a 14k long-tined, two-tone Arrow nib that’s a Super-Flexible writer. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to an impressive 4B++ (approx 2.8mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back giving one surgical control over the line, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. I guarantee you’ll be delighted by its performance. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. This pen is extremely well-preserved. Excellent barrel transparency of an orange color with ink level readily visible (DETAIL PHOTO). Apart from a sliver of brassing around the blind cap tassie, the nickel-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing or other notable flaws. Rhodium plating on the nib is intact but there are some small scuffs to the left of the arrow. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible aside from the “Made in USA” portion and the date code, which have worn away. Price: $640 SOLD

4. 1945 Parker Vac Duofold Senior (blue and silver pearl, celluloid, GPT, Vacumatic filler, 14k XF/F nib). This oversized model measures 5 3/8” capped. The Senior was Parker's premier Duofold in the 1940s. Post-1942 variants like this one feature gold-plated trim with chevron cap band and Blue Diamond clip signifying Parker's lifetime guarantee. This pen is made of celluloid in the desirable blue and grey pearl marble pattern interspersed with transparent barrel striations. 14k Duofold “V” nib is rumored to have been a hopeful foretokening of an Allied victory in WWII. This one is a very small tipping size but its wet flow widens the line such that it lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent+ [B]. Gold-plated trim is incredibly clean with no brassing or other notable flaws aside from one short scrtch on the clip beneath the blue diamond. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Excellent barrel transparency of a light orange color with ink level readily visible when filled (DETAIL PHOTO). Manufacturer imprint and date code on barrel are deep and fully legible. Price: $270 SOLD

5. 1947 Parker 51 Vac (Black, Lucite, Sterling Silver cap, Vacumatic filler, 14k XF nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/2” capped. The Parker 51 was the best-selling fountain pen ever made. Engineered with the precision of a Swiss watch and built like a tank, the 51 introduced several innovative features that continue to make it a favorite EDC among writers today. The hooded nib enables it to remain uncapped for extended periods without drying out (preventing hard starts when it returns to paper). The clutch-activated cap is uncapped quickly while holding securely when the pen is pocketed. The Lucite barrel is all but indestructible, so you never have to worry about cracks if the pen takes a spill. And the Vacumatic filling system holds a considerable amount of ink directly in the barrel. This is a 51 in black with a lined Sterling Silver cap with chevron cap band (DETAIL PHOTO). Cap has a Canadian imprint while barrel has a US imprint (DETAIL PHOTO). Gold-plated clip with grey jewel at the top. 14k 51 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent- [B-]. There are several dings in the Sterling cap that have been factored into the price (see timestamp photo for the worst of them). Other than that this pen is quite clean. Gold-plated clip shows no brassing or other notable flaws. Sharply pointed jewel. Lucite surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is weakened but mostly legible under a loupe while the date code is sharp and legible. Price: $170 SOLD

[WTS] VINTAGE • Colorful Celluloids and Wet Noodles from the 1920s-40s [Firm-Wet Noodle]: Waterman Thorobred | Conklin Sub-Endura Retrofit | Universal V100 | End of Day Retrofit | Pick Flat Top | Sheaffer OS Lifetime Flat Top | Parker Duofold Sr Lapis | Diamond Point OS Flat Top •

This week’s vintage batch features colorful celluloid pens from the 1920s-40s with unusually soft and flexible nibs. Nibs range from Firm to Wet Noodle, including a couple of my custom retrofits: installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. As always, all pens are fully restored and ready to write.

Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line.

1. c.1940 Waterman Thorobred (grey pearl w/ red pinstripes, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. Manufactured for a very short time from the late 30s to early 40s, the Thorobred is comparatively less documented than other Waterman models of the era. It's a shame since the celluloids that Waterman used for these pens are stunning (and some of my personal favorites). This example, stamped “Thorobred” on the barrel-end, is made of celluloid in a grey pearl marbled mosaic pattern, interspersed with bright red pinstripes. Nickel-plated trim. Super-Flexible 14k Waterman’s Ideal #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel-plated trim is clean aside from some vertical scratches on the clip, a pin-sized ding on the cap band situated on the backside of the cap, and a sliver of wear on the center of the lever. Scratches are less noticeable in person – lighting in the photos reduces the visible sheen of the clip, making them stand out more. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel and model stamp on barrel-end are deep and fully legible. Price: $250 SOLD

2. 1930s Conklin Sub-Endura Retrofit (Moss Agate, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle Retrofit nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/8” capped. Collectors coined the name ‘Sub-Endura’ to refer to models that were essentially scaled-down versions of the streamlined Endura Symetrik without the annular rings or crescent embedded in the caps signifying Conklin’s lifetime guarantee. This example is made of celluloid in the green and brown peal marble pattern Waterman called Moss Agate. Gold-plated trim with patented rocker clip and crescent motif on the clip and lever hearkening back to the Conklin Crescent-Filler: the pen that first put this maker on the map. This pen features a Retrofit: the custom installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. That Winsor & Mason #1 is a Wet Noodle with painterly softness and flow. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+]. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. A collector-grade pen in an unusual color and a truly delightful writer to boot. Price: $290 SOLD

3. 1940s Universal V100 (celluloid, brown pearl w/ grey pinstripe, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. The Universal Pen Company flourished in Brooklyn, New York in the 1940s. Its products were primarily sold in department, stationery, and drug stores. This pen is made of celluloid in an unusual color pattern resembling that of the later Waterman Ink-Vues. It’s a combination of brown pearl marble with grey pinstripes framed in black. Gold-plated trim including military-style clip exemplifies midcentury design. Super-Flexible Warranted #4 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a truly incredible 4B+/5B (approx 3.0mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). It’s rare that I ever have a pen to offer that breaks into the 3.0mm max line width range. Strong snap-back, impressive max line width, and reliable flow over its full range of flex with a wet ink to optimize flow makes it an outstanding choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+] aside from the nib. The only significant flaw in this pen is a hairline crack in the nib that extends up to the ‘4’ marking. This type of crack does not worsen unless the nib is removed and has no impact whatsoever on writing characteristics or performance. It's been factored into the price all the same. Gold-plated trim is clean with no brassing and just a couple pin-sized spots of wear on the lever. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $200 SOLD

4. 1930s-40s End of Day Retrofit (motley scale, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle Flex nib). This is a full-sized model but its barrel threads extend so far up the barrel that it measures 4 3/4” when cap is screwed down all the way. Posted length is 6 1/8.” Dubbed "End of Day" pens by collectors, these exotic creatures are rumored to have been made of celluloid scraps such as those left over at the end of the day after making other pens. Like others of its sort, this one lacks a maker's mark. Its pattern includes just about every color in the spectrum, including flashes of rose and teal. There are also pearlescent portions that resemble fish scales! Conical ends and gold-plated trim. This pen features another Retrofit: the custom installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. That Edward Todd $ Co. #2 nib has Wet Noodle softness, though its max line width is limited to the Flexible range. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Don’t be fooled by the modest max line width – anything more than grazing the page suffices to flex this nib. That effortless variation together with its thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent- [B-]. Gold-plated trim is clean aside from some thinning of the plating in spots on the cap band and some high point wear near the top of the clip. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. No manufacturer imprint from the factory. Price: $220 SOLD

5. 1920s Pick Flat Top (black, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. Founded in Cincinnati, OH by Arthur Schoenberger, Pick flourished from 1920 to roughly 1933 under the direction of a former employee of Weidlich. As Richard Binder writes, “Pick produced pens of very high quality [...] marketing the product to dealers by driving a pen into a block of balsa wood, removing it, and showing that it still wrote well.” This example is made of black celluloid complemented by gold-plated trim. An interesting design with atypically long cap with crown that unscrews like those of the Duofolds below. Super-Flexible 14k Warranted #4 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. Gold-plated trim is clean aside from 2 tiny spots of wear on the bottom edge of the lower cap band directly beneath the clip and some pin-sized marks on the clip and lever. Celluloid has a smooth, lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from 3-4 pin-sized nicks near the top of the cap to the left of the clip (see timestamp photo) and a couple scratches over the barrel imprint (see imprints photo). Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $190

6. 1920s Sheaffer Oversized Lifetime Flat Top (black, Radite [celluloid], GPT, lever filler, 14k F nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 1/4” capped. It was Walter A. Sheaffer who first patented the lever-filling fountain pen in 1908. In 1912 he founded the Sheaffer pen company and his revolutionary design was met with resounding acclaim. In the 1920s Sheaffer made the transition from ebonite to Radite (or hard rubber to celluloid), introducing soon thereafter so-called Lifetime models sold with a lifetime guarantee. These flagship models were distinguished by nibs stamped ‘Lifetime’ and Sheaffer’s signature white dot, the early placement of which was on the crown of these flat tops. This oversized Lifetime model is made of black celluloid with gold-plated trim. These pens carried one of the heaviest nibs among oversized models (>1g) due to their considerable thickness and long tails. That oversized 14k Sheaffer Lifetime nib lays down a rigid yet smooth and consistent F line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent [B]. Gold-plated trim is clean aside from a small spot of brassing of the same size along the bottom edge of the cap band on each side of the cap (see timestamp photo), a sliver on the top edge of the clip, and the typical spot on the clip ball. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. But there is some stippling of the surface on the ends of the pen that appears to have been caused during manufacture (DETAIL PHOTO). Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. A perfect fir for those who prefer a large pen made of thick, robust materials. Price: $320

7. c.1927 Parker Duofold Senior (Lapis blue, celluloid, GPT, button filler, 14k F Semiflex nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 1/2” capped - a very large pen by vintage standards. One of the first pens to be made of celluloid, the Duofold is the pen that first put Parker on the map, becoming an instant bestseller. The Senior was their flagship. It’s a button filler (see barrel imprints photo). To fill simply unscrew the blindcap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. This example is made of Lapis white-on-blue celluloid (DuPont’s Permanite) with knurled, black hard rubber blind cap, clip lock, and X-mas tree feed. Lapis is one of the most desirable Duofold colors and Seniors in this color aren't easy to come by these days. This is a Canadian example with ‘Made in Canada’ imprints on the barrel and nib. That Duofold Sr. nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line with Semi-Flex softness, widening to a 3B or so (approx 1.4mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent [B]. Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing aside from the typical sliver on the clip ball and no other flaws apart from a stippling of wear on the very top of the clip. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Excellent color with minor darkening of the barrel. Hard rubber parts are factory black and knurling is sharp and crisp. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. One of the icons of vintage pendom in well-preserved condition with a lovely nib that’s much softer than the typical rigid Duofold nail. Price: $480

8. 1920s Diamond Point Oversized Flat Top (Jade, celluloid, GPT lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 5/16” capped. The Diamond Point pen company made first rate pens in an array of exciting colors and configurations. Over the past decade, collectors have begun to catch on and oversized flat tops like this one, especially, have gained quite a following. Founded some time before 1892, the company came into its own in the 1910s, when it began making pens of its own. This example is made of celluloid in the Jade color pattern found on pens such as the Sheaffer Balance and Parker Duofold. Gold-plated trim with “New Diamond PP [Point Pen]” on the clip. Most of these pens came with nibs on the rigid side. This one is a surprising exception. Its commensurably large 14k Warranted #8 nib is a Wet Noodle with flow and softness verging on that of a soft dip pen nib. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a wildly impressive 4B++ (approx 2.8mm!) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Effortless variation, wide max line width, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: ** near-mint [B+]. Collectors know that Jade is one of the toughest colors to find without unsightly discoloration – the vast majority crop up discolored to various shades of brown. The color of this pen, by contrast, is perfect. I’d grade it 10/10 with no discoloration whatsoever. I can’t tell you how uncommon this is! Likewise, the gold-plated trim is virtually immaculate. No brassing and no other flaws whatsoever apart from a couple pin-sized points of wear on the left edge of the lever Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no notable blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. A museum-grade pen and a wild writer. Price: $420 SOLD [before listing]

Note: If you’re unable to expand album photos to full size, try opening the link in a different browser.

THESE PENS HAVE NO CRACKS, CHIPS, PERSONALIZATIONS (except #2), LOOSE OR MISSING PARTS, BENT NIBS, MISALIGNED TINES, BROKEN/WORN OFF TIPPING, OR THREADING ISSUES.

1. 1920s Waterman 452 1/2V Overlay (Basketweave pattern, sterling silver over HR, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This is the short/vestpocket (V) thin (1/2) model, measuring 3 11/16" capped and 5" posted. To my mind, early Watermans overlays epitomize the fine quality and workmanship of an heirloom pen, passed down for generations and laid by for generations to come. The Art Deco overlay pattern on this pen, commonly referred to as "basketweave" or "bamboo," is made of sterling silver (as marked on the cap and barrel) over black hard rubber. It has a substantial heft in the hand for its diminutive size. Full overlay covers the end of the barrel, which is knurled to more securely post the cap. This is the ringtop version, designed to wear on a chatelaine, necklace, or pocket-chain. Super-Flexible 14k Waterman Ideal #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Visible hard rubber parts are factory black with no discernible fading. Overlay is exceptionally clean with no dents, dings, or other notable flaws aside from a short, 1/8”-long scratch on the knurled portion of the barrel-end and a couple spots on the lip of the cap’s crown that are flattened (see ends photo). HR has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacture imprints on the overlay are all deep and fully legible. Price: $260 SOLD

2. c.1918 Waterman 452 1/2 Overlay (Hand-Engraved Vine, sterling silver over HR, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This standard-length, slender girth (1/2) model measures 5 3/8” capped. This pen is made of black hard rubber with a sterling silver overlay in one of the most sought-after patterns: Hand-Engraved Vine. It's an intricate Art Nouveau motif consisting of foliage and flowers against a finely lined backdrop and an elegantly framed indicia on the barrel for engraving. The workmanship and detailing of this pen are extraordinary. This was the only overlay pattern that Waterman applied to the clip and lever as well. Super-Flexible 14k Waterman Ideal #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.6mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+]. Overlay is exceptionally clean with no dents, dings, or other notable flaws apart from one negligible flat spot on the lip of the cap’s crown (see ends photo). There is a professionally engraved monogram (“R.G.H.”) on the barrel indicia designed for this purpose. Visible hard rubber parts are factory black with no discernible fading. HR has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from one small (1/8" long) flat spot on the uncovered BHR near the barrel-end in line with the lever (does not affect posting). Manufacturer imprints on the overlay are factory deep. Imprint on BHR is slightly weakened in the center but still fully legible. Number stamp on barrel-end is factory deep and fully legible. An uncommon pen in uncommonly well-preserved condition. Price: $530 SOLD

3. 1920s Waterman 52 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler 14k XF/F Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/8” capped. The 52 has long been the gold standard by which all other vintage flex is measured. This incredibly clean example is made of black chased hard rubber complemented by a nickel-plated clip and lever. Super-Flexible 14k Waterman Ideal #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.7mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Wide max line width, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: near-mint [B+]. This is what your standard BCHR 52 is supposed to look like – just as it did in the salesroom display case! This pen resembles a time capsule relic. HR retains its factory black color with no oxidation. Chasing is factory deep and sharp. Nickel-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws apart from one pin-sized mark on the lever. HR has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprints on the barrel are factory deep and fully legible but the surface is stippled where the model number usually is on the barrel-end, making it illegible. On the whole, a delightful writer in outstanding condition. Price: $310 SOLD

4. c.1904-10 Parker Lucky Curve #6 Taper Cap ED (BCHR, GFT, eyedropper filler, 14k XF Flex/Superflex nib). This model came in a gentlemen’s size with a thicker girth and a slender ladies’ size. This gentlemen’s size example measures a lengthy 5 7/8” capped and its proportions are larger than a Waterman 22, which corresponds to the so-called ladies' size #6. The highly uncommon #6 model was made in the intervening decade between 1894, when Parker was founded, and the debut of their button filling system in the 1910s. Lucky Curve banner imprint indicates this example was made after 1904. It’s a taper cap eyedropper made with a black chased hard rubber barrel with 2 heavy, gold-filled barrel bands hammered into an ornate repoussé, a repeating snail and ellipse pattern. Cap is smooth BHR from the factory. Lucky Curve feed is intact with no damage to the tail or X-mas tree portion under the nib. This pen is an eyedropper filler. The section unscrews for the barrel to be filled directly with ink using a syringe or pipette. Parker Lucky Curve nib with early imprint predates Parker’s numbered nibs but is the size of a #3. It yields Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness, laying down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.0mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles. **Condition:**fine [C]. This pen would grade as excellent were it not for a chip out of the edge of the GF barrel band closest to the nib (DETAIL PHOTO). The chip is to the band only and does not extend to the underlying hard rubber. No cracks in the band or anywhere else. Aside from that the bands are very clean with no brassing or other noteworthy blemishes. Hard rubber retains its dark black color with virtually no fading. Chasing on the barrel is very weak, being lightly visible when the light strikes it. Ditto the manufacturer imprint on the barrel, which is mostly legible but requires a good eye or loupe to make it out. Surface shows minor drawer wear but no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Pen caps on the section and posts to the barrel-end securely with no unusual looseness or tightness. A scarce find for the Parker collector offered at 1/3 the price of others I’ve found sold online. Price: $380 $350

5. 1920s Wahl-Eversharp Tulip Clip (Grecian Border pattern, BCHR, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Superflex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 5/16” capped and 5 5/8” posted. This pen features a deluxe trim configuration with an unusual spade clip attached to the gold-filled crown of the cap by a tulip-shaped base. This charming element, at once decorative and functional, has long prompted collectors to refer to these models as Wahl's "Tulip Clip" pens. Whether the shape was intended also to signify 'W' (for Wahl) is unknown. This example is made of black hard rubber chased in the Art Deco Grecian Border pattern. Trim includes aforementioned clip attached to metal crown that covers the cap’s top as well as double cap bands, lever, and decorative ring on the barrel-end. Super-Flexible 14k Wahl Tempoint #2 nib looks to be a properly sized replacement from an earlier Wahl Tempoint pen. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. As another seller mentioned on here today, tulip clips are often found broken off. This one is entirely intact. The only notable flaw on this pen is some brassing to the trim, mostly to the bottom cap band and a sliver around the decorative ring on the barrel-end, but also 2 small spots on the sides of the lever at its apex. Hard rubber retains its factory black color with no discernible oxidation. Chasing is factory deep and sharp with no discernible wear. Manufacturer imprint on cap’s metal crown is deep and fully legible. Price: $250 $230

6. 1920s Liberty Flat Top (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Flex nib). This pen has a standard girth and is on the shorter side capped, measuring 4 5/8” capped, but it posts to the full-sized length of and 6.” The Liberty Fountain & Gold Pen Company was founded in New York City before 1914 by George F. Barrett, where it flourished until c.1930. This Liberty flat top is made of black chased hard rubber with nickel-plated trim. Flexible 14k Warranted #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for shaded and expressive writing styles. Condition: near-mint [B+]. Another very well-preserved example illustrating what chased hard rubber originally like. Hard rubber retains its factory black color with no oxidation. Chasing is factory deep and crisp with no discernible wear. Nickel-plated trim is free of brassing and other notable flaws. HR has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $160 $150

1. 1920s Lincoln Oversized Flat Top (MHR, GPT, lever filler, 14k F Superflex nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 7/16” capped. The Lincoln Pen was made by the National Pen Products Company of Chicago. National was a massive conglomerate known also for Diamond Medal and Gold Bond pens together with its collaborations with Parker, Wahl-Eversharp, and Waterman in producing re-branded Vacumatics, Dorics, No. 7s, etc. for Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck & Co., beginning in the mid to late 1920s. Early Lincoln pens like this one were made of hard rubber, in this case mottled red and black HR. Gold-plated trim including clip with signature floral motif. Super-Flexible 14k Warranted #8 nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx. 2.6mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. HR retains its factory black and brilliant red color with no fading. Gold-plated trim is clean aside from a bit of brassing: 1-2mm high along the bottom edge of the cap band around 2/3 of the cap and one spot in the middle of the band on the left side of the cap; slivers on the side edges of the lever spade; and typical sliver on clip ball. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $290 SOLD

2. 1920s Lincoln Oversized Flat Top (red, celluloid, GPT with solid 14k cap band, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 3/8” capped. For more about Lincoln pens, see description of pen #1 above. This later Lincoln, less common than the one above, was made after the company began manufacturing pens in celluloid. The celluloid used for this example is of the same color that Parker called red in reference to the Duofold, or “Big Red.” Deluxe trim configuration with the same clip as pen #1 but a thinner cap band stamped ‘14k’, which indicates solid gold (DETAIL PHOTO). Flexible 14k Warranted #8-sized nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a 3B+ (approx. 1.9mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for shaded and calligraphic writing. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Trim is exceptionally clean aside from 2 pin-sized dings on the cap band, the typical sliver of brassing on the clip ball, and thin slivers on the side edges of the lever spade. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is weakened in the center but otherwise deep and fully legible. Price: $330 SOLD

3. 1920s Diamond Point Oversized Flat Top (red and black leather pattern, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k M/B Flex Factory Stub nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 3/8” capped. The Diamond Point pen company made first rate pens in an array of exciting colors and configurations. Over the past couple decades, collectors have begun to catch on and pens like this one have gained quite a following. Founded some time before 1892, the company came into its own in the 1910s, when it began making pens of its own. This oversized example exhibits a highly uncommon and uncommonly fetching color pattern I’ve seen only once before. It’s made of celluloid with a durable, factory-enameled surface in an oxblood leatherette pattern, so thickly applied that the black portions are in palpable relief (see barrels/imprints photo). Note that ends are also fully enameled. Gold-plated trim with heavy cap band and DP markings on clip and lever. This pen is equipped with a truly lovely replacement nib from Waterman. It’s a 14k Ideal Canada nib with a Keyhole breather hole. The nib is either a #4 or a #5 in size but is unnumbered. It’s a Flexible Factory Stub. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent M/B line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes. And the line widens to a 4B+ (approx. 2.0mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile variation, strong-snap back, sharp variation combined with factory smoothness, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an outstanding choice for a wide range of calligraphic styles. Condition: near mint [B+]. Gold-plated trim is nearly pristine aside from a pin-sized spot of brassing on the right side of the clip ball. Painted surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Section has a couple small nicks (see uncapped photo). A stunning example of an uncommon pen and a delightful writer to boot. Price: $430 SOLD

4. 1920s Sheaffer Oversized Lifetime Flat Top (black, Radite [celluloid], GPT, lever filler, 14k F nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 3/8” capped. These flagship models were distinguished by nibs stamped ‘Lifetime’ and Sheaffer’s signature white dot, the early placement of which was on the crown of these flat tops (DETAIL PHOTO). Condition: near-mint [B+]. This pen resembles a relic recovered from a time capsule, being virtually pristine aside from the typical spot of brassing on the clip ball and a couple short, superficial scratches on the lever. Apart from that the trim is flawless with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $350 SOLD

5. 1920s Waterman 55 (Woodgrain HR, GPT, lever filler, 14k Stubby Superflex M nib). This 55 is an oversized model with a thick girth and capped measurement of a hair over 5 1/2.” Comparatively scarcer and more desirable than their black hard rubber counterparts, Waterman’s red and black hard rubber pens range from ripple patterns to those resembling woodgrain. Oversized examples are scarcer still. This Woodgrain HR pen is stamped ‘55’on the barrel-end (DETAIL PHOTO RIGHT). It features gold-plated trim with wide clip and cap band with Ideal Globe logo on clip and lever spade. Matching section and feed (FEED PHOTO). 14k Ideal NY #5 nib could be of earlier vintage. It’s a Super-Flexible writer, laying down a smooth and consistent M line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx. 2.8mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Ample max line width, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for big, bold, calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. HR has retained its dark black and vibrant red color with virtually no fading. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean for this model with just hairsbreadth slivers of brassing 1/4” long on the top edge of the cap band on the sides of the cap (see timestamp photo), on the side edges of the lever spade spotted under a loupe, and the typical sliver of brassing on the clip ball. Manufacturer imprint on barrel and number stamp on barrel-end are deep and fully legible. Price: $480 SOLD

6. c. 1918 Waterman 56 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex/Wet Noodle nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures a hair over 5 1/2” capped. Even tougher to find than a 55, the 56 is the first step up into models of huge caliber. This example is made of black chased hard rubber complemented by nickel trim including clip and lever stamped with Waterman's globe emblem. ‘56’ stamped on the barrel-end (DETAIL PHOTO LEFT). While many of these larger models came with rigid, manifold nibs, this one is a delightful exception. Its 14k Ideal #6 nib yields Super-Flexible variation with softness verging on that of a Wet Noodle. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx. 2.8mm!) under very light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Easy variation, thin hairlines, strongly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an outstanding choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Hard rubber retains its dark black color, appearing black in most lighting conditions but with subtle fading visible under direct, bright light. Chasing is evenly weakened: mostly visible but no longer palpable. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is quite weak and mostly illegible. but ’56’ is clearly visible on barrel-end. A tough pen to find in this size – especially one with a nib like this one! Price: $540 SOLD

[WTS] VINTAGE • Colorful Big Four Celluloid Pens from the 1920s-40s (Firm-Wet Noodle, Stub, Retrofit): Waterman 301 Thorobred, Hundred Year Pen | Parker Deluxe Challenger, Vac Standard | Sheaffer Balance "Statesman," Jade Desk Set, Balance Statesman Set in Box | Majestic Snake | Conklin Endura •

This week’s vintage batch features celluloid pens from the Big Four American makers of the 1920s-40s. Nibs range from Firm to Wet Noodle, including a Factory Stub and one Retrofit dip pen nib. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

Note: If you’re unable to expand album photos to full size, try opening the link in a different browser.

1. c.1940 Waterman 301 Thorobred (grey pearl w/ red pinstripes, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Superflex nib). US models were stamped “Thorobred” on the barrel-end while Canadian examples were marked “301” (like this one) or “32A.” This Canadian example is made of celluloid in a grey pearl marbled mosaic pattern, interspersed with bright red pinstripes. Nickel-plated trim and “32A” stamped on the barrel-end. Super-Flexible 14k Ideal Canada #2A nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Aside from brassing to the clip ball – the only notable flaw – this pen is near-mint. The rest of the trim is clean with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel and model number stamp on barrel-end are deep and fully legible. Price: $250 SOLD

2. 1940s Waterman Hundred Year Pen (black, celluloid, GFT, lever filler, 14k F Factory Stub nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/8” capped. The Hundred Year Pen (HYP) was Waterman's premier model of the 40s and the company spared no expense in its construction. These pens feature impressively large and meticulously finished nibs, heavy gold-filled trim, and a factory warranty of no less than 100 years (the model's namesake). This 3rd-generation Canadian HYP is made of black celluloid with a ribbed construction on the barrel and part of the cap. As stamped, the Canadian nib is indeed firm. But it has a Factory Stub grind (uncommon on this model), laying down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF/XXF line on the cross-strokes (see WRITING SAMPLE). A great combination of smoothness and sharp variation more typical of factory grinds than of nibmeister regrinds. Condition: excellent+/near mint [B+]. Opaque black models like this one have none of the crystallization problems that plague the ones with transparent ends. This pen’s plastic is as durable as they come, ready for another lifetime of service. Gold-plated trim is virtually pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the back of cap is fully legible but a couple letters in the top line of “Waterman” are weakened. Price: $340

3. 1938 Parker Deluxe Challenger (black w/ green pearl chips, celluloid, GPT, button filler, 14k XF/F Flex/Superflex nib). Price: $180 SOLD [before listing]

4. 1937 Parker Vacumatic Standard (Burgundy Pearl, celluloid, GPT, Vacumatic lockdown filler, 14k Two-Tone XF nib). Price: $290 SOLD [before listing]

5. c.1931 Sheaffer Balance “Statesman” (Marine Green marble, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle nib). WRITING SAMPLE. SOLD [before listing]

6. c.1931 Sheaffer Balance “Statesman” Desk Set (Jade, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k Two-Tone F nib). This full-length, standard-girth model measures 7 7/16” with the taper and 4 11/16” without the taper. This set includes pen, taper, and black marble desk base with trumpet (DETAIL PHOTO). Desk base has a relatively small footprint, measuring 2 7/8 X 2 3/16.” This pen predates the “Statesman” model name; it’s the name Sheaffer would call this model in the mid 1930s. It’s made of celluloid in the Jade color pattern: desirable yet tough to find without darkening/discoloration. Gold-plated trim on pen and trumpet, white dot on pen signifying Sheaffer’s lifetime guarantee, and matching 14k Lifetime Two-Tone nib. That nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent [B]. Color is superb. While the vast majority of Jade Sheaffers have darkened to various brown hues, this one retains its original vibrant green with just a couple bands of darkening on the barrel that are more subtle in person than in the photos: one thin band just above the section and another at the end of the barrel around the white dot. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. I believe the taper is made of Bakelite or Casein and shows some light scratches and pin-sized marks. Desk base in clean with no cracks, chips, or other noteworthy blemishes aside from one pin-sized chip on one of the corners. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible despite minor weakening to the far right of the bottom line. Note: this one will be shipped with the usual latex sacs I use due to the dribbling that sometimes occurs with silicone sacs when a pen is stored nib-down. Silicone sac may be installed on buyer’s request at no extra charge. Price: $160 + $15 shipping

7. c.1936 Sheaffer Balance Statesman Set in Box (Golden Brown, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Two-Tone “Waverly” nib). This is a standard-sized set with FP measuring a hair under 5 1/2” capped. Matching FP and MP come in their factory original box (BOX1 | BOX2). The Statesman was one step down in size from the oversized Balance Premier but was sold for the same price ($10.00). This one is made of Golden Brown striated celluloid complemented by gold-plated furniture. Streamlined radius clip, white dot signifying Sheaffer's lifetime guarantee, and transparent ink-view section window for checking ink level. 14k Two-Tone Sheaffer Lifetime nib has a slightly upturned point from the factory in the “Waverly” style to enhance smoothness (DETAIL PHOTO). It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: near mint [B+]. This set resembled a time capsule relic that’s seen little, if any, use. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. Manufacturer imprints on barrel of FP and cap of MP are factory deep and fully legible. MP is fully functional, expelling, retracting, and gripping lead as designed. Box is in great shape aside from having lost the elastic strings that hold the FP and MP. Price: $230

8. 1930s Majestic Snake (Reptilian Gold-Green Vein, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/8” capped. After decades of producing hard rubber pens of high quality, J. Harris & Co. of New York City renamed themselves to the Majestic Pen Company, which became known for making celluloid pens in extraordinary color patterns. These pens were featured on the cover of Fountain Pen Journal a few years back, so eye-catching is their appearance. This example in Reptilian Gold-Green Vein appears to have been made of the exact same celluloid as found on the NOS Stickered Conklin All-American Vacuum Model I listed a couple weeks back. It consists of a golden, pearlescent snakeskin pattern interspersed with vibrant green veins. Streamlined profile also resembles the Conklin All American. Gold-plated trim with clip stamped “PAT’D” | “MAJESTIC.” This pen features a Retrofit: the custom installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. That long-tined Crown nib is a Wet Noodle with painterly softess and flow. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx. 2.2mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Note that I did have to switch to a wetter ink (Omas Grey) to optimize flow under full flex. But once I did, the performance was flawless. Needlepoint hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: is excellent+ [B+]. Perfect color with no darkening. Gold plated trim is clean with no brassing or other notable flaws aside from a spot of plating wear on the center/apex of the lever, a couple on the corners of the lever spade, and one pin-sized spot of wear on the cap band (see timestamp photo). Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely any microscratches. No manufacturer imprint from the factory. Price: $260 SOLD

9. 1920s Conklin Endura Standard (Sapphire Blue, Pyroxilin, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex /Superflex nib). This standard-sized model was the second-largest Endura, measuring 4 7/8" capped and 6 1/8" posted. Established as the Self Fountain Pen Company in 1898 by Roy Conklin, the Conklin Pen Company operated out of Toledo, OH. Thanks to their widely popular Crescent-Filler, the company rose to prominence as one of the Big Four American companies before being sold to a Chicago firm in 1938. The Endura marked Conklin’s transition from pens made of ebonite/hard rubber to colorful Pyroxilin plastics. This is an earlier model in the sought-after Sapphire Blue color with gold-plated hardware including patented rocker clip (raises at the bottom when the top is depressed) and red annular bands. Crescent motif on the lever and nib hearken back to the Conklin Crescent-Filler. 14k Conklin Endura nib yields Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE – note change in flexibility grade after taking measurements). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for shaded and calligraphic writing styles. Condition: fine [C]. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws. Good color with a band of darkening on the barrel around where the bottom of the cap is when the pen is capped. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Under a loupe the nib exhibits the beginnings of hairline cracks extending from the sides of the crescent-shaped breather hole (less than 1mm long). These have no discernible effect on the nib’s performance and the nib has a lot of life in it yet as long as one stays within the flex range of the writing sample. Nib also shows some wear to the center of the imprint. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Annular rings have been restored to their original red color. An attractive pen and a lovely writer. Price: $180 SOLD

1. 1920s Baby Ring Top Hand-Engraved Overlay Set (Hand-Engraved Vine pattern, Sterling Silver over HR, eyedropper filler, 14k XF Flex nib). This diminutive set has a slender girth and the pen measures 3” capped and 3 7/8” posted. This matching FP and MP set are ring tops designed to hang from a ribbon, chatelaine, or pocket chain. It came to me with a gold-tone clasp (shown attached to the pencil ring top) that can attach the FP and MP together and then clasp to a chain. The small size of this set makes it perfect to wear as a pendant on a necklace. There are no makers marks, just “Sterling” stamped on the plain ends of the FP barrel and top of the MP. But the construction and intricately hand-engraved details attest to its first-tier workmanship. The Sterling overlay is hand engraved with an Art Nouveau motif resembling Waterman’s Hand Engraved Vine pattern with a single flower at the top of the cap. This pen is an eyedropper filler. The section unscrews for the barrel to be filled with an eyedropper/syringe. Flexible 14k nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.6mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). An impressive max line width when you consider the size of the nib! Thin hairlines and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for shaded writing. Condition excellent+ [B+]. This set is exceptionally well preserved. No dents, dings, deep scratches or notable flaws to either FP or MP. Since these are solid Sterling, you don’t have to worry about brassing. Indicias for engraving on barrels left blank. HR parts are factory black with no noteworthy blemishes. MP is fully functional: expelling, retracting, and gripping lead as designed when the top is turned. Price: $210 SOLD

2. 1920s Conklin Gold-Filled Pen (checker and bar pattern, GF, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This pen measures 4 7/8” capped and 6 1/2” posted. Following Wahl (see #5 below) in the 1920s, Conklin began making pens of an all metal construction that were machine turned in an array of Art Deco patterns. Again like Wahl, these pens had a shorter capped length but posted long. This gold-filled model, chased in a checker and bar pattern, has streamlined ends and Conklin’s patented rocker clip that raises at the bottom when the top is depressed. Super-Flexible, long-tined Conklin #3 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a n impressive 4B+ (approx 2.7mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines strongly responsive snap-back, widest max line width of the batch, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: fine [C]. This pen presents well but does have a few notable flaws under close inspection. The crown of the cap and barrel-end bot have a shallow ding (see ends photo), there are 3 minor, pin-sized dings on the barrel that are made inconspicuous by blending into the pattern, and there is one nick on the cap’s indicia that penetrates to the base metal (see timestamp photo). The only brassing on this pen is confined to the clip: a spot on the top and another on the bottom. These flaws have been factored into the price. A lovely writer with some minor cosmetic flaws that don’t appreciably detract from its elegant appearance, making it a pen you won’t hesitate to use as an EDC. Price: $270

3. 1920s Eclipse Overlay Retrofit (Art Deco pattern, GF over HR, lever filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. The Eclipse pen company of New York City divided their model lineup into different names, or sub-brands, of increasing quality and price. At the low end was Park Row, followed by Marxton, with Eclipse being the top of the line. This top-of-the-line overlay is 14k gold-filled (as stamped near the top of the cap) over hard rubber. Ornate, Art Deco, machine turned pattern consisting of leaves, flowers, and vertical lines. This pen is a Retrofit: the custom installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. That 14k Grieshaber Chicago #1 nib is a Wet Noodle with painterly softness and flow. Its size and lack of breather hole limit its max line width to the Flexible range by the standards above but its variation is enhanced by Needlepoint hairlines under normal pressure. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, effortless variation, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Overlay and trim have no dents, dings, brassing or other notable flaws. BHR parts retain their factory black color with no discernible oxidation and no noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer stamps on cap, clip, and lever are all deep and fully legible. Price: $250

4. 1910s-23 Sheaffer 38DC Giftie Overlay (scallop pattern, Green GF over HR, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. Like Parker’s, Sheaffer’s early overlays are orders of magnitude more difficult to find than Waterman’s. And full-sized examples are scarcer and more desirable than short models. This early Sheaffer was made when the company was still equipping their pens with nibs marked “Self-Filling” – less than a decade after their first lever-filling pens. In catalogues of the period, they were advertised in boxes with matching pencils as “Giftie” sets under the banner of “Gifts that Last.” This 38DC model (as labeled in the 1922-3 catalogues) is made of black hard rubber with a gold-filled overlay chased in a scallop pattern. NOTE: PLEASE DISREGARD THE NIB IN THE ALBUM PHOTOS ABOVE. AFTER TAKING PHOTOS OF THIS PEN WITH A RETROFIT NIB, I SOURCED AND INSTALLED A CORRECT SHEAFFER #2 SELF-FILLING NIB, WHICH IS THE NIB THIS PEN IS NOW BEING SOLD WITH (DETAIL PHOTO). I try to keep my restorations historically accurate whenever possible. That Super-Flexible Self-Filling #2 lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an outstanding choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent- [B-]. This pen would grade close to near mint were it not for a band of brassing on the plain end of the barrel from the cap being posted over the decades. No dents, dings, or other notable flaws apart from 2 pin-sized spots of wear on the cap band on either side of the clip and the typical spot on the clip ball. There is a professionally engraved monogram on the barrel indicia designed for this purpose: “B.P” in elegant Copperplate script. HR parts are factory black with no noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $320 SOLD

5. 1922-24 Wahl All Metal Pen (Ripple, GF, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex/Wet Noodle nib). This was one of the longest, thickest models, having a thick girth and measuring 5” capped. A relative latecomer to the FP market in the late 1910s, Wahl applied the manufacturing techniques it had long used to make mechanical pencils to the production of a new, "all metal" fountain pen design (as opposed to metal over hard rubber). Over the course of the 1920s, these pens became a canvas for a plethora of Art Deco patterns, which where mechanically engraved into the pens – or "engine turned," as the catalogues put it. This model, marked gold-filled above the clip, exhibits an ornate, zig-zag and line motif Wahl called “Ripple,” which appears in catalogues only from 1922-24. Large, sturdy spade clip stamped Wahl and signature lever with raised design signaling early 1920s manufacture. This pen came to me nibless but would have come from the factory with a Wahl #4. In place of it I have installed an identically-sized 14k AA Waterman/Modern #4 nib with teardrop breather hole. That nib yields Super-Flexible variation with softness under flex verging on that of a Wet Noodle. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under very light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near mint [B+]. Cosmetically, this pen resembles a time capsule relic. It has no notable flaws at all. No dents, dings, or brassing. One minor scratch on the clip spade is the only sign of use. There is one minor issue of note that I haven’t been able to diagnose and correct. The lever operates as deigned with no issues but it sometimes doesn’t lie flush with the barrel after flipping it back down. This doesn’t happen every time but it does sometimes require a couple tries to get the spade to catch and not float a couple mm above where it should be when closed with the barrel turned lever-down. A minor issue that does not affect filling at all. Indicia for engraving on barrel left blank. HR parts are factory black with no noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprints are factory deep. Price: $350 [ON HOLD]

6. 1920s Mabie Todd Swan Gold-Filled Flat Top (GF over HR, line and checker pattern, lever filler, 14k XXF/XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. Originally based in New York City, Mabie Todd was founded in 1859 by John Mabie, Edward Todd, and J. Sprague Bar. Their first fountain pen was made c.1878 and their Swan pens date back to c.1890. By the 1920s their production was divided between New York and England, their English pens vying with Conway Stewart for supremacy among British pens. This pen was made in Mabie Todd’s New York factory. It’s made of hard rubber with a gold-filled overlay that’s engraved in a checker pattern composed of vertical lines with double sets of horizontal rings to accent the plain ends of the barrel and cap. 1915 patent date stamped on the clip and “Swan Pen / Mabie Todd & Co. New York / Made in USA” stamped near the barrel-end. Super-Flexible 14k Mabie Todd #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF/XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another extraordinary choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: near-mint [B+]. This pen resembles a time capsule relic, showing no notable signs of wear whatsoever. No dents, dings, or brassing. Not even any wear to the edge of the section overlay (a very common blemish on these). Note that nib is perfectly straight but has a factory scoop on the tines just behind the tipping like some Wahl and Canadian Parker nibs - makes it look a little different in the photos. Indicia on barrel has been left blank. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer example of this pen. Price: $390

7. 1920s Wahl 72 Flat Top (BCHR, Grecian Border pattern, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. Before Wahl introduced its Gold Seal pens in the late 1920s, the company manufactured some stunning flat tops exemplified by this one. In company literature pens of this size were assigned a model of 72. It's made of black hard rubber, chased in the geometric Art Deco design referred to by collectors as Greek Key and by catalogues as Grecian Border. Gold-plated trim including wide cap band and functional roller clip stamped “Wahl Pen.” Super-Flexible 14k Wahl #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-lated trim show no brassing or other notable flaws. Hard rubber retains its dark black color with perhaps just a hint of fading under the brightest direct lighting conditions. Chasing is sharp and deep. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint above the clip is deep and fully legible. Price: $270

8. 1920s Mor’s Flat Top (MHR, NPT, lever filler, 18k F Wet Noodle Stub nib). This full-sized model measures 5 5/16” capped. Mor’s was a somewhat obscure French maker that also sold pens under the Sabatier name in the early decades of the twentienth century. Their pens often bore a striking resemblance to Watermans and this one is no exception. It’s made of mottled red and black hard rubber with a lever box design nearly identical to Waterman lever-fillers of the period, replete with globe imprint on the spade but with “PSF” (pocket self filler) stamped in place of “Ideal.” The cap also has a similar design, with a groove near the bottom just like Watermans of the 1920s. On the whole, it’s virtually identical to a Waterman 52 in MHR – were one ever made. This pen came clipless from the factory (no holed drilled for a clip). But it comes with a sturdy, nickel-plated accommodation clip with a riveted deisgn that’s also identical to Waterman accommodation clips of the period sans “Ideal” stamp. 18k Mor’s #40 nib is a Factory Sub with Wet Noodle flexibility. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes. And the line widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile shading, effortless variation, and reliable flow under full flex with a suitable ink makes it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Note that I did have to switch to a wetter ink to optimize flow under full flex. But once I did there was no railroading or any other flow issues. Condition: excellent+/near-mint [B+]. Hard rubber retains its factory vibrant red and factory black color with no discernible oxidation. Nickel-plated trim shows no brassing or other notable flaws – just some microscratches on the clip. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint is factory deep and fully legible (filled in with white as received but this can be brushed out with a toothbrush on buyer’s request). Price: $340 SOLD

9. 1910s J. Ullrich Matchstick Filler (BCHR, matchstick filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model has a rather thick girth for the period and measures 5 3/16” capped. J. Ullrich & Company (JU & Co) was founded the late 1880s and based in New York City. The company is known for manufacturing stylographic pens and fountain pens with unusual filling systems, patented to circumvent designs by Conklin. This slip-cap pen made of black chased hard rubber is a matchstick filler. Instead of using a lever and pressure bar to deflate the sac inside, it’s designed to be filled by submersing the nib and depressing the pressure bar directly using a matchstick (or similarly sized object) by insertion into the hole drilled in the center of the barrel. This pen came clipless from the factory (no holes drilled for a clip). Super-Flexible, long-tined JU & Co nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. This pen would grade as near-mint were it not for a professionally engraved name on the cap (“CJ Von Seutter”) - see uncapped photo. Hard rubber is factory black with no discernible oxidation. Chasing is factory deep and sharp with no discernible wear. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – just some light scratching on the barrel from where the cap slides on. No manufacturer imprint from the factory. A lovely writer for those looking for a slip-cap pen with a wider girth. Price: $180 SOLD

[WTS] VINTAGE • 1930s-40s New Old Stock and Colorful Gems with Specialty Nibs (Flex-Wet Noodle, Stub, Music): Conklin Endura RT | NOS Ottawa | NOS Conklin All American Vacuum Lizard | NOS Eversharp Oxford | Parker Duofold Streamlined Sr | Pilot R-Type Music | Moss Agate Retrofit | Epenco Merlin •

This week’s vintage batch features celluloid pens from the 1930s-40s in a kaleidoscopic array of color patterns, some quite uncommon. Among them are 3 NOS stickered pens and several with specialty nibs ranging from Superflex to Wet Noodle, including a Factory Stub, a dip pen nib Retrofit, and one Superflex Music Nib. All are restored and ready to write except for the Conklin All American (#3), which is perhaps a better fit for historical preservation than it is in a weekly rotation.

Note: If you’re unable to expand album photos to full size, try opening the link in a different browser.

Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below (except #3) have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks.

1. c.1929 Conklin Endura Ring Top (Verd-Green, Pyroxilin, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Flex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 7/16” capped and 5 1/2” posted. This ring top Endura has a ring in the cap’s crown reinforced by a metal helmet, designed to attach to a chatelaine or pocket chain. Conklin called this color “Verd,” a name inspired by its resemblance to the mottled and veined appearance of Serpentine marble. It’s made of Conklin’s patented “Non Breakable” Pyroxlin – a plastic similar to celluloid – and is accented by red annular rings – a signature feature of the Endura. Crescent motif repeated for the nib’s breather hole and again on the lever hearkens back to the Conklin Crescent-Filler: the pen that first put the company on the map. Flexible 14k Conklin Endura nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B++ (approx 1.9mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great everyday writer capable of shaded writing. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no btrassing or other notable flaws aside from some negligible, pin-sized marks around the edge of the metal crown on the cap - none so deep as to distort its shape. Color is super even across the barrel and cap. Red annular rings are well-preserved, so there was no need to repaint them. Pyroxilin surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $160

2. 1930s NOS Stickered Ottawa by Conklin (red pearl, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 4 7/8” capped and 6 1/16” posted. Ottawa was a Conklin sub-brand named after the original, Native American inhabitants of the area surrounding Toledo, Ohio, where Conklin was headquartered. This New Old Stock example retains its original sticker on the barrel, though parts of the sticker are worn away, making the words mostly illegible. It’s made of a fetching red peark celluloid complemented by an elaborate trim configuration including finely milled cap band with vertical cutouts and arrow clip hearkening back to the Ottawa tribe. I received this pen nibless and installed a long-tined 14k Conklin Toledo #2. The nib is not 100% factory correct (one expects an Ottawa nib) but it makes for an appropriate, properly-sized replacement made by the same company. It’s a truly delightful writer: a Wet Noodle with the softness and flow of a soft dip pen nib. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, effortless variation, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. New old stock yet fully restored and inked. Gold-plated trim is virtually pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws – just a small scuff near the top of the clip. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes apart from a couple minor scratches at the edge of the sticker on the barrel. Manufacturer imprint is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $340

3. c.1936-38 NOS Stickered Conklin All American Vacuum Model (Reptilian Gold-Green Vein, celluloid, GPT, vacuum filler, 14k XF nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. For more on the Conklin Pen Company, see description of pen #1 above. The All American was Conklin’s last hurrah before the company was sold in 1938 and the quality of their pens deteriorated precipitously. Some of Conklin's most unusual and unusually eye-catching celluloid pens were sub-brands like the Ottawa above as well as student pens such as this All American. Along with "Halloween" and "Zebra" flat tops, this streamlined Lizard – patterned off the Endura Symetrik – is among the scarcest and most desirable. But there are two details of this particular example that make it downright rare. First, most All Americans were lever fillers. But for just one year, Conklin produced this Vacuum filling variant with a partially transparent barrel. The mechanism is similar to their Quick-Fill but with a removable blind cap and an impressively beefy/overengineered stainless steel plunger rod (PATENT). More info can be found at Penhero, which has a great profile of these entitled, “Conklin All American Sacless Vacuum Pen c. 1936-1938.” Second, this pen is New Old Stock with its original price sticker intact on the back of the cap (see timestamp photo). What’s more, it appears to be uninked – not a trace of ink visible anywhere and a swab of the cap/inner cap comes out without a trace of ink residue. As a result, the barrel has retained its factory transparency: crystal clear with not even yellowing of the celluloid (BARREL TRANSPARENCY). All this makes for what is perhaps a one-of-a-kind example looking just as it did in the salesroom case. At the very least, I have never seen another stickered example online or at pen shows and I suspect one could comb through these for decades without finding another in this condition. This pen is made of celluloid in the Reptilian Gold-Green Vein pattern consisting of wrapped, golden lizard- or snakeskin interspersed with vibrant green veins. I have not inked the pen for testing. According to the sticker, the 14k All American nib has a F nib width, but I’d wager it’s more of an XF by the modern nib-width standards above. Condition: near-mint [N] but unrestored. Owing to the uninked, museum-grade condition of this pen, I am offering it unrestored. The plunger rod is stuck in the down position. Sometimes all that’s required to make these work again when they haven’t seen much use is to remove the nib and feed, fill the barrel with water, and let it soak into the seals overnight. But the nib and feed are too well set to be pulled from the front and I’m reluctant to heat the barrel threads to unscrew the section at risk of damaging a pen that could be one-of-a-kind. This pen might best go to a Conklin collector who has no plans to ink it anyway so as to preserve it for posterity, for the pen history books of the future. But if you do decide to send it off for restoration, Ron Zorn of Mainstreet pens should be your first contact on the basis of his experience and expertise. Cosmetically this pen has no notable flaws whatsoever. Perfect color. No brassing or other noteworthy blemishes on the trim. Celluloid surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable flaws – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. A pristine example of a highly uncommon piece of Conklin history in one of the most attractive color patterns this maker ever produced. Price: $550 SOLD

4. 1930s NOS Stickered Wahl-Eversharp Oxford (grey pearl, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k F Superflex Stub nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. This new old stock pen retains its original sticker with model number a $5.00 price on the back of the cap (see timestamp photo). The Oxford was marketed as a school pen. Its design underwent myriad revisions throughout the 30s-40s, becoming a platform for experimental designs and colors. This later Oxford has the same profile and trim configuration as the vacuum-filling model collectors once referred to as the “round Doric.” It’s made of celluloid in a grey pearl color pattern complemented by gold-plated trim. Depending on the production year, Oxfords regularly came from the factory with nibs that were either stamped Oxford or with Warranted nibs. I believe this 14k Warranted #5 nib is original. It’s a Super-Flexible Factory Stub. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XXF line on the cross-strokes. And the line widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile variation, responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for cleaning up printed handwriting as well as calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. This pen is new old stock but fully restored and inked. It would grade as near mint were it not for some high-point wear to the clip, which probably developed as a result of how this pen was stored for nearly a century. Other than that, it’s exceptionally clean. No other brassing or notable flaws on the trim. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $240 SOLD

5. 1934 Parker Duofold Streamlined Senior (Burgundy Marble, Permanite [celluloid], GFT, button filler, 14k XF nib). This oversized model has a thick girth and measures 5 1/8” capped. Streamlined profile that Parker adopted c.1929, presumably in response to the fashions popularized by Sheaffer's Balance. While Streamlined Duofold Seniors made in the US came with two thinner cap bands, this Canadian example is unusual for retaining the single wide band that Janesville phased out c.1927-28. It’s made of Permanite, DuPont’s proprietary celluloid, in a marbled color pattern consisting of burgundy pearl portions against a black backdrop. Gold-filled trim and black hard rubber blind cap, clip lock, section and comb feed. It is a button filler (see barrel imprints photo). To fill simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. Commensurably oversized Parker Arrow nib is a US factory replacement (as per 1946-7 Parker Service Manuals, though this factory service for damaged nibs began in the 1930s). It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws aside from the typical sliver on the clip ball. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Just a couple very minor, pin-sized marks on the HR blind cap. Canadian manufacturer imprint on the barrel with ‘4’ date code is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $390 SOLD

6. c.1940 Pilot R-Type “Shadow Wave” with MUSIC NIB (grey shadow wave, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, 14k Superflex B Music nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/8” capped. Price: $600 SOLD [before listing]

7. 1930s Moss Agate Retrofit (moss agate/green & bronze, celluloid, GPT, lever filler 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. This pen has no maker’s marks. But its green and bronze color pattern is identical to what Waterman called Moss Agate when used for the Patrician, 94, et al. Stepped black ends and gold-plated trim with a lever resembling those used by National of Chicago – makers of Gold Bond, Diamond Medal, Gold Medal, etc. This pen is a Retrofit: the custom installation of a 14k iridium-tipped dip pen nib that’s adjusted and tuned to ensure factory performance. That 14k Crown #1 nib is a Needlepoint Wet Noodle with painterly softness and flow. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, effortless variation, surgically precise snap-back (best of the batch), and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. Gold-plated trim is clean aside from some wear/microscratches on the clip that have dulled its luster and a couple small divots on the cap bands (see timestamp photo). Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. A delightful writer in a lovely color pattern. Price: $260 SOLD

8. 1930s Eagle Pen Co Merlin (dark navy w/ gold moon and stars, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5" capped. Originally a German pencil company, Eagle opened its first US factory in New York City in 1861. The company manufactured its first fountain pens in the 1890s, making it one of the oldest makers in the United States. The Merlin was by no means an expensive model, aimed as it was at a popular price point. But it’s not easy to come by and has been prominently featured in many books on vintage fountain pens owing to its wild color pattern, made up of golden moons and stars that are actually embedded beneath the surface of the celluloid. Much like painterly depictions of the night sky, this pen appears black in all but the brightest of lights. But a penlight reveals it to actually be a dark navy blue (DETAIL PHOTO). In contrast to most of these, which came with uninspiring stainless steel nibs, this one carries a 14k Warranted NY #4 nib that’s a Wet Noodle with softness and flow comparable to the soft dip pen Retrofit above. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.6mm!) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, effortless variation, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: C/D [fine/fair]. This pen is difficult to grade as I’m unsure as to whether its most notable flaw can’t simply be chalked up to a factory defect. Around the top of the cap and bottom of the barrel, there looks to be a fine stress-fracture above each of the embedded moons and stars. These do not penetrate all the way through the pen. And it was not until I polished and examined it with a loupe that I even noticed them. These are not damage resulting from trauma or rough use, like hairline cracks in a cap lip from posting too hard. Instead, I think they’re the result of the factory not embedding the moons and stars not deep enough in combination with the imperceptible shrinkage of any celluloid over the years. In any case, this has been factored into the price. Other than that, this pen is quite clean. Gold-plated trim shows no notable wear apart from brassing to the cap band and some small marks on the top right of the clip. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes in addition to those mentioned. Another lovely writer in an uncommon color pattern. Price: $190 SOLD

This week’s vintage batch features mostly pocket-sized pens with special focus on Parker’s Duofold in its evolution from red hard rubber flat tops of the early 1920s to the streamlined Permanite variants of the late 1920s. Nibs range from Firm to Superflex, including one Factory Stub (#5). As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

Note: If you’re unable to expand album photos to full size, try opening the link in a different browser.

1. 1920s Pick Flat Top (black, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This is the lone full-sized model in this batch, measuring 5” capped. Super-Flexible 14k Warranted #4 nib with unusual ovular breather hole lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Price: $210

2. c.1924 Parker RHR Lady Duofold (RHR, GFT, button filler, 14k M nib). This short, slender model measures 4 11/16” capped and 5 7/8” posted. Parker introduced the Lady Duofold in 1922. It was originally available in different length and width variations with either a clip or ring top or plain cap. By 1924, the Lady Duofold was still made of hard rubber but it was standardized as a Junior-length slender pen with a ring top and either 3 thin cap bands or one wide, gold-filled band like the Duofold Deluxe. As with all 1920s Duofolds, earlier, HR examples are exponentially scarcer and more sought after than their more plentiful Permanite successors. This example is made of red hard rubber with black hard rubber cap crown, blind cap, and section. Lucky Curve “Xmas tree” feed is also HR. Ring top on the cap’s crown designed to attach to a chatelaine or pocket chain. 14k Duofold nib lays down a smooth and consistent M line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: near-mint [B+]. Hard rubber retains its original color, including the factory black HR parts. Gold-filled cap band is pristine with no brassing, dents, or dings. Knurling on the cap top and blind cap is factory deep and sharp with a couple minor scratches on the latter. Other than that, all surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no noteworthy blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $230

3. c.1924 Parker RHR Duofold Junior (RHR, GFT, button filler, 14k XF Semiflex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 9/16” capped and 5 13/16” posted. As with all 1920s Duofolds, earlier, HR examples are exponentially scarcer and more sought after than their more plentiful Permanite successors. Also considerably heavier in the hand. This example is made of red hard rubber with black hard rubber cap crown, blind cap, and section, complemented by gold-filled clip and single, raised cap band. Lucky Curve “Xmas tree” feed is also HR. Large Duofold LC imprint on the barrel. This pen is a button filler. To fill simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. Semiflex 14k Duofold Jr nib is a little softer than most. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 2B or so (approx 1.1mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Color is superb - perfectly even with no dark splotches. No brassing or other notable flaws on the trim aside from the typical spot on the clip ball. Barrel imprint is nice and sharp with only minor weakening to ‘Lucky Curve’ in the banner, though it remains legible. HR surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. BHR parts are factory black. Knurling to clip lock and blind cap are sharp, though not factory sharp like those on #2. On the whole, a lovely, collector-grade example of this pen. Price: $360 SOLD

4. c.1927-8 Parker Duofold Junior (red Permanite [celluloid], GFT, button filler, 14k XF nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 9/16” capped and 5 1/2” posted. In 1925-6, Parker phased out hard rubber across the Duofold lineup and began making them out of Permanite, DuPont’s name for their proprietary celluloid. This red Permanite flat top features the double cap bands introduced c.1927-28. It retains black hard rubber clip lock, blind cap, section, and Lucky Curve “Xmas tree” feed. This pen is a button filler. To fill simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. I believe the Arrow nib to be a factory replacement nib (as per 1946-7 Parker Service Manuals, though this service for damaged nibs began in the 1930s). It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-filled trims shows no brassing or other notable flaws aside from the typical spot on the clip ball. Surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. BHR parts are factory black. Knurling to clip lock is sharp but does have one nick above the clip and there are a couple spots on the blind cap where the knurling is half worn away. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is sharp, deep, and fully legible. Price: $190 SOLD

5. c.1929 Parker Long Junior Streamlined (black, Permanite [celluloid], button filler, 14k F Factory Stub nib). This model is longer than the regular streamlined Junior. It has a standard girth and measures 4 3/4” capped and 6” posted. In 1929 the Duofold received another facelift, taking on a more streamlined profile. This streamlined Duofold Long Jr is made of black Permanite with HR accents complemented by gold-filled trim. This pen is a button filler. To fill simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. 14k Duofold nib is an uncommon Factory Stub. It lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes (see WRITING SAMPLE). A nice combination of smoothness and sharp variation more readily found on Factory grinds than on nibmeister regrinds. Condition: near-mint [B+]. Gold plated trim is virtually pristine with no brassing or other notable flaws aside from the typical sliver on the clip ball. Surfaces are smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. HR parts are factory black. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $240

6. c.1929 Duofold Juniorette (Mandarin Yellow, celluloid, GPT, button filler, 14k XF nib). This short, slender model measures 4 1/2” capped and 5 1/2” posted. The Juniorette model was essentially a Lady Duofold with a clip instead of a ring top. This is a streamlined example in Mandarin Yellow: the scarcest and most desirable catalogued Duofold color. Becuase the color did not sell well when it was introduced in 1927 and was more fragile than Red or Black, one finds hundreds, if not thousands, of these more common colors for every clean Mandarin Duofold today. The cap and barrel are made of Permanite (DuPont’s proprietary celluloid) while the clip lock and blind cap are ebonite (black hard rubber). Deluxe trim configuration with clip and triple, gold-plated cap bands. This pen was made after Parker discontinued the Lucky Curve feed and accompanying LC imprint, having instead the later comb feed and simpler Duofold imprint. This pen is a button filler (see fillers photo). To fill simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the brass button once. 14k Duofold nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: near mint [B+]. As mentioned, Mandarin Yellow is a very fragile color and the vast majority of these crop up with cap lip cracks. I’m happy to report that this example has no chips or cracks whatsoever. And the color is superb with no darkening of the barrel. Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing aside from the typical spot on the clip ball. Hard rubber parts are factory black with no oxidation. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is slightly weakened but still sharp and fully legible (DETAIL PHOTO). The going rate for these from the usual online retailers is $400. I’m asking less. An exceedingly tough pen to find in this condition. Price: $280 SOLD

7. 1920s Aikin Lambert Capitol Secretary (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 3/8” capped and 5 5/8” posted. Founded as a jewelry maker in 1864, Aikin Lambert made its first strides in the manufacture of gold nibs for dip pens until the 1880s when the company began to produce fountain pens under the license of Paul Wirt's patents. The company manufactured nibs for various makers including Waterman and made a handful of pens of their own. Beginning in 1906 and precipitated further by the death of James C. Aikin in 1911, Waterman took over, assuming full control of the company in 1915. The result was pens like this one, which is essentially a Waterman 52v with different trim and branding. This Capitol Secretary in black chased hard rubber resembles a Waterman 52v in most respects except for trim. The nickel-plated lever is a simpler, boxless design while the ALCO (Aikin Lambert Company) clip has an elegant teardrop profile. Super-Flexible 14k Aikin Lambert Co. nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel-plated trim shows no brassing or other notable flaws. Hard rubber retains its dark black color with virtually no fading. Chasing is factory deep and sharp on the cap and only a tad weaker on the barrel (BARREL CHASING). HR surfaces are smooth a lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Cap scres on smoothly and holds securely but takes only about 1/4 of a full turn to lock. Manufacturer imprint on the cap is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $170 SOLD

8. 1900s-10s Crocker Ink-Tite (BCHR, blow filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Superflex nib). This short, slender model measures 4 1/4” capped and 5 1/8” posted. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Crocker was founded in 1902 by Seth Sears Crocker (father of Seth Chilton Crocker of Chilton pen fame). This short-lived company – bankrupted in 1922 - is known for having produced pens of high quality. And they are perhaps best known for 2 innovative filling system designs: a locking end-lever-filler (US Patent 1,214,310); and a blow filler illustrated by this Ink-Tite (US PATENT 678,547 PHOTO). This pen incorporates a sac on the inside of the barrel. But instead of depressing the sac by mechanically by means of a lever or button in combination with a pressure bar, it relies on the magic of human respiration! To fill one submerses the nib and then blows into the nipple on the barrel-end, which deflates the sac inside. Upon raising one’s lips from the barrel-end, the sac fills with ink. I have cleaned the barrel-end thoroughly. But for a more hygienic and efficient way to fill, I’ve found that a generic bulb ear syringe (included on request) is a perfect fit for the nipple and even yields a better fill. You just submerse the nib, place the mouth of the bulb syringe over the nipple on the barrel-end, and squeeze the bulb. This Ink-Tite is made of black chased hard rubber. Cap came clipless and ringless from the factory (no holes drilled for a clip or ring top). 14k long-tined Super-Flexible Crocker #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex epitomize the characteristics of early 20c nibs and make it an excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: B-/C (excellent/fine). This pen would grade higher were it not for the extremely weak chasing on the cap. It’s visible when a bright light strikes it, but only just. Chasing on the barrel is much stronger. Hard rubber retains its dark black color with just a hint of fading visible under bright, direct light. HR surface has no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. An uncommon piece of pen history and a truly lovely writer with no nasty flaws but definitely showing its 100+ years of service. Price: $160
