Franklin Christoph Model 28 Libertas - 1.1 Stub: brass bodied discontinued FC, I was curious about this one and had to try it out. I have enough slender pens right now. For the FC collector, 1.1 stub tuned by Kirk Speer. Body has scuffs or some brass if rather, but the chrome bits are in good condition. I will rate this C, see writing example. No OG box

Ensso Puma Minimalist- this is an ebonite bodies pen, shows some use, but the ebonite holds up extremely well. I equipped it with a titanium Tom Studio nib that I have adjusted and ground to a medium-ish cursive smooth italic. Ti nibs are known to be scratchy but I smoothened this out some. Rated D for nib swaps and a marred bock feed and modding. The feed is not pretty, but functions pretty flawlessly. See writing example, flexes well and I’m not a flexer, the swiggles are with my non dominant right hand.

Pilot Custom 22kAGM - nib is 18kt fine and bouncy. This shows wear from years of use, but it’s a catch and release for me. Writes a wet fine line, excellent flow and writer. Will rate C for no original box and being vintage.

This week’s vintage batch features Watermans and Wahl-Eversharps with Flex/Superflex nibs in an array of celluloid color patterns. Nibs range from Flex to Superflex (verging on Wet Noodle), including one Factory Stub. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks. Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line.

Line Widths and Writing Samples: To provide buyers with as much information as possible, I have adopted the following line width standards: XXF (.1-.2mm); XF (approx .3mm); F (approx .4mm); M (approx .6mm); B (approx .8mm). Nib flexibility is determined by variation (max line width under pressure) and softness (amount of pressure). Flexibility designations based on variation generally run as follows for an XF/F nib: Semi-Flex (approx. 1mm); Flex (1.2-1.9mm); Superflex (2mm+). All line width measurements are taken with a digital caliper but should be considered approximations providing a general guide. Width may vary slightly depending on type of ink and paper used as well as amount of pressure applied. All writing samples are on Rhodia dot paper using Waterman Serenity Blue or Waterman Intense Black (unless otherwise noted).

1. 1930s Waterman English Flat Top (green marble, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex/Superflex Stub nib). This full-sized model has a thicker girth than a #2 and measures 4 11/16” capped. I’ve listed a couple of these over the years but have never been able to track down a name or model number (these did not have number stamps on the barrel-ends). This pen was made in England (as marked) in the 1930s and carries a Canadian nib. It’s similar to the US-made 3/32, except it’s slightly thicker in girth, 1/4” shorter, sports a different lever, and has gold- rather than nickel-plated trim. It’s made of celluloid in a green pearl marble color pattern finished with black ends. 14k Waterman Ideal Canada #2 nib is a Factory Stub capable of Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F line on the down-strokes and XF line on the cross-strokes. And that line widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile variation, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for adding shading to one’s everyday writing as it is for calligraphic writing styles, the stub grind keeping one’s letterforms neat and straight. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-plated trim shows some shallow, pin-sized marks at the top of the clip and on the sides of the lever but is free of brassing or other notable flaws. Perfect color with no discoloration (these often faded to light green over the years). Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is slightly weakened in the center but otherwise deep and fully legible. Price: $250 SOLD

 

2. 1930s Waterman 3 (Green Pearl, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, XXF Needlepoint Superflex/Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5” capped. The 3/32 model was offered in a colorful array of celluloids at a more modest price-point than the 94 but was typically equipped with #2 series nibs no less expressive than those found on Waterman’s famous 52s. This example is made of celluloid in a color pattern Waterman called Green Pearl, consisting of vibrant flashes of bright red set against a pearlescent green marble backdrop. Nickel-plated trim in simplified Art Deco style. 14k Waterman Ideal #2 nib yields Super-Flexible variation with softness verging on that of a Wet Noodle. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under very light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, easy variation, superbly responsive snap-back (best of the batch) giving one surgically precise control over the line, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an exceptional choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Nickel-plated trim is unusually clean with no brassing and just some microscratches on the sides and top of the clip. Perfect color with no discoloration. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel and number stamp on barrel-end are factory deep and fully legible. Price: $290 SOLD [before listing]

 

3. 1930s Wahl-Eversharp Gold Seal Flat Top w/ Soldier Clip (Brazilian Green, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF/F Flex/Superflex nib). This short, standard girth model measures 4 11/16” capped. Wahl-Eversharp’s Gold Seal pens of the 1920s and 1930s are some of their most sought after, epitomizing an Art Deco style best known from the oversized Deco Band. This flat top model appeared in the same catalogues as the Deco Band and even shares the rhomboid cap band adorning Deco Bands of the same color. W-E called this color Brazilian Green: a pearlescent green marble pattern with chatoyant bronze portions. Deluxe gold-plated trim configuration with rhomboid cap band, multiple decorative bands, and Wahl’s signature roller clip. That clip is attached at the top of the pen, enabling it to ride low in the pocket in conformity with military officer uniform regulations of the period – hence the oft-used term “soldier clip.” Gold seal beneath the clip signifying W-E’s lifetime gurantee. There is also a decorative metal disk embedded in the cap’s crown (DETAIL PHOTO). 14k Wahl Signature nib yields Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. Feed is marked ‘F’ and nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: fine [C]. This pen has no terminal flaws and present well after a polish. But it does show moderate brassing: mostly to the cap bands and trim rings but also a spot on the top of the clip where it bends. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. But it does have a couple spots where the celluloid pattern has a slightly raised appearance, presumable due to the otherwise imperceptible shrinkage of the celluloid over the years (see area of cap imprint in imprints photo). Not something you’d notice unless you’re looking for it. Color itself is superb with no discoloration and no dulling of the luster of the bronze portions. Manufacturer imprint on cap is deep and fully legible. Price: $330 SOLD [before listing]

 

4. 1930s Wahl-Eversharp Gold Seal Flat Top (Coral, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/4” capped. Wahl-Eversharp’s Gold Seal pens were their flagships, carrying lifetime guarantees and featuring some of the most desirable celluloid color patterns they ever made. The bright reddish orange color catalogued as Coral is a case in point. Made in smaller numbers and especially prone to unsightly discoloration, Coral flat tops like this one are diamonds in the rough. This full-sized model - significantly scarcer than its smaller counterparts – features a deluxe trim configuration with W-E’s signature roller clip, double cap bands, and decorative rings on the ends. This pen features a 14k W-E Gold Seal nib marked “Flexible,” which is integrated into a Personal Point feed unit that unscrews from the section just like one of Pelikan’s or Esterbrook’s. It’s a Super-Flexible writer, laying down a smooth and consistent XXF line (despite the ‘F’ stamp on the feed) that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, strongly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+]. This pen resembles a time capsule relic. Unlike the vast majority of these, its color is superb with no discernible discoloration. Gold-plated trim is virtually pristine with no notable flaws aside from a 3mm-long sliver of brassing on the bottom edge of the lower cap band visible under a loupe situated on each side of the cap. No other brassing (note the ‘U.S.A’ stamp on the top of the clip, which can be confused with wear in photos but isn’t). Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on cap is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $480 SOLD [before listing]

 

5. 1930s Eversharp Doric (Morocco Pearl and Black?, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. This is a non-Gold-Seal model made of celluloid in a color pattern I’ve never seen before. The hue of the red marble resembles the Morocco Pearl color of 1st-gen Dorics but the red portions are sparcer, such that they appear to be floating against a black backdrop. Art Deco charms include a faceted barrel and cap, cap band with geometric motif, and elegantly chamfered clip and lever. 14k Eversharp nib stamped ‘Flexible’ is a Super-Flexible writer. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.1mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. Some lighter Doric colors were prone to crystallization/breakdown of the plastic. Thankfully, darker colors like this one are MUCH more stable and it’s rare to see any such issues plaguing them. I’m happy to report that there are no signs of any plastic deterioration on this pen – not on the ends or anywhere else. Gold-plated trim is clean with no notable flaws aside from high-point wear on the edges of the clip and the apex of the lever. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from some small nicks around the ‘Eversharp’ imprint on the cap. Despite this, that imprint remains deep and fully legible. An Art Deco icon in a highly unusual color and a lovely writer. Price: $370

 

6. 1940s Eversharp Skyline (Dubonnet Red w/ Green/Red Striated cap, polystyrene barrel and celluloid cap, GPT, lever filler, 14k F Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. Hatched from the mind of the celebrated industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, the Skyline exhibits the elegant integration of function and a streamlined style with Art Deco influences. This has a polystyrene barrel and matching section in a color Eversharp called Dubonnet Red with a striated celluloid cap in in green and bright red stripes. Gold-plated trim with one of the smartest over-the-top clip designs ever made. But what truly sets this pen apart from your typical Skyline is the nib, which is perhaps THE most flexible I’ve ever encountered on this model. That Superflex 14k Eversharp banner nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line that widens to a wildly impressive 4B++ (approx 3.0mm!) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Incredible max line widths and reliably wet flow over its full range of flex make it an outstanding choice for calligraphic writing styles in a big, bold hand. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold plated trim is exceptionally clean with no notable flaws aside from one 1/4”-long, sliver of brassing along top left edge of the clip. Plastics have a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on clip tassie is deep and fully legible. A common pen in uncommonly good condition with a nib that’s downright rare. Price: $240 SOLD

 

7. 1940s Eversharp Skyline Modern Stripe (Red Moire, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/4” capped. Hatched from the mind of the celebrated industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, the Skyline exhibits the elegant integration of function and a streamlined style with Art Deco influences. Eversharp's colorful range of celluloid Skylines in patterns they dubbed "Modern Stripe" are sought after for their beauty and relative scarcity in comparison to the standard, polystyrene models. Red Moire remains the hardest Modern Stripe color to track down by a long chalk. I often receive requests from collectors who have managed to acquire all the other colors but can’t seem find this one anywhere. This is a standard-sized (not demi) model in Red moire with matching red derby, transparent ink-view window in the section for checking ink level, and military style clip. Super-Flexible 14k Skyline nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: near-mint [B+], Gold-plated trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing whatsoever aside from a miniscule, 1mm sliver on the side of the lever visible only under a loupe. Celluloid has a smooth and lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on the clip tassie is deep and fully legible. Dark green is a bit beat up. These have all been used very little, though, and each inked maybe two or three times.

Rating is due to the fact that this nib needs to be replaced. The body is in a [b/A1] condition given very minimal scratches if any. However, the nib on it is extremely finicky to me, and has been since purchase no matter the ink. It will need to be replaced for an actual valid writing experience.

For sale is a Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 in silver with an 18k Medium nib.

Condition is B+++, I purchased this at a pen show (Long Beach, 2020) and advertised as "Like New", inked it maybe two or three times to try out different inks, used it for maybe a few hours at most, and mostly just sits in my pen display box.

It's in excellent condition except for a small dent on the bottom side of the pen, see album for detail, but it's kind of hard to see. I didn't notice that dent until I was home, but it seems like that was already there when I purchased it (I guess I got too excited and didn't examine it too carefully). Otherwise, the rest of the pen is like new.

Serial number can be seen on the ring of the clip (see album) and "Made in Germany" on the underside of the clip (didn't take a picture but I can if requested).

This limited collaboration between Esterbrook and FWP features the stunning Rockstar acrylic paired with Esterbrook's special Journaler nib, custom ground by Gena Salorino; this is a medium nib ground to a stub and is perfect for everyday writing with a little extra flair.

I love the overall look and feel of the collab and the resin is amazing, but the pattern I received didn't really speak to me 🥲 I kept it around for a while to see if my feelings would change, but, alas, that didn't happen 💔
