General Zod is dropped into the Star Wars universe. How long would it take him to take over the galaxy?

General Dru-Zod is teleported to the Star Wars universe (post-ROTJ/New Republic era). Knowing his goal of recreating Krypton is unachievable, he decides to take over and rule the galaxy. How long would this take? Does the galaxy have a chance to defeat him?

Superman is not present and Zod does not have access to the Phantom Zone.
