Had the worst experience with a medical provider ever today.
TLDR I got yelled at by my oral surgeon and now I still have an infected tooth and no one will take it out because I have a heart condition.
I (23F) went to have my wisdom teeth out today. A week ago I got an infection in one of them but it was actually after I had scheduled the extraction, so annoying timing.
I called prior to tell them I had a heart condition and they said I couldn’t have general anesthesia bc of it and I said that was fine. So I get there today and surgeon arrives and asks if I want all 4 out. I say yes. He says “That’s a lot to be awake for.” Assistant chimes in to tell him I have a minor heart condition and that’s why. He says it’s up to me to choose? I say uh, I was already told it’s not safe. He says okay. I ask if he doesn’t think I need all 4 out and thats why he’s saying something. He says no, it’s fine and let’s get started.
I’m weirded out because him and the nurse are kind of flirting it seems, and at times I feel like theyre laughing at me, they’re both young, maybe in their 30s-early 40s. But I think maybe I’m overthinking it and brush it off. Assistant had mentioned I’d need 4 numbing injections per tooth and I am horribly afraid of needles. I hadn’t expected that much so I start getting anxious but I don’t say anything besides “wow, that’s a lot..”
Surgeon rolls up to administer the numbing and sees my eyes watering. Immediately flies off the handle? He starts asking the nurse how old am I, what’s my problem, what’s wrong with me, and then tells me I should just go get it done at the hospital?? I’m like what hospitals do that bc I don’t know of any, most will send you back to a surgeon or dentist. But I don’t say that, just shake my head and open my mouth for him to continue.
He gets really unsettled and starts rapid firing questions again, asking me if I’m sure I want this, and then starts saying he doesn’t think I’m ready for this. Before I can respond he throws the syringe down onto the tray, huffs and storms out while shaking his head. I didn’t get a chance to tell him I really need at least the infected tooth out as I’ve already been on antibiotics for a week.
Assistant sits in silence for a sec before asking if I want her to go bring him back. I say no, he’s acting really aggressive, and she nods and walks me to the front. She repeats that I should consider a hospital and bids me farewell.
I cried for six hours (We drove 4 hours to reach this surgeon because I have limited options with my insurance). The whole way home ans then some. And in between FIFTEEN (LITERALLY 15) calls to different surgeons and dentists. Every single one turned me away. One said they’d do it with approval from a cardiologist. (They wouldn’t even do local.) I told them to send the forms over to them and I called to ask them to fill it out. But a hospital won’t take me either. So if they can’t pull this tooth in the next couple of days I’m actually FUCKED because I have a compromised immune system and the infection will spread, but also I have terrible immune responses to antibiotics and they make me deathly ill for months after. I got another round to hold me over until just hopefully SOMEONE will take out my fucking teeth. Feeling so lost and ashamed and confused.
