The right turn and pedestrians in Los Angeles

I’m on foot right now walking in this wonderful city of ours and noticing once again how many blind right turns drivers will make.

Like the crosswalk will signal that it’s time for pedestrians to cross and so I will, but I can’t tell you how many times drivers will immediately begin swinging their vehicle to turn right without even looking to see if there was anyone entering the crosswalk.

Same deal with a stop sign.. drivers will roll through and check their blind spot of the lane, but not for any walking humans.

Have almost gotten hit on a few different occasions (especially around Culver City/Papms area)

All that to say, what’s going on LA?

Pay attention to the crosswalks and pedestrians if you’re driving, and if you’re walking, always make sure you make eye contact with the driver and that they see you before you walk out there! They may be driving distractedly/off instinct.

Have a great weekend though (heatwave is over!!!!) and stay safe

Removing all 4 wisdom teeth ?

I'm scheduled to get my wisdom teeth (all 4; bottom 2 are impacted/sideways) very soon and I'm starting to get a bit nervous about it lol.

I've experienced anesthesia before and not so worried about that (which I believe they'll be giving to me) but I'm sitting here having second thoughts about the necessity of extraction: I'm experiencing no pain in any of my teeth, so why trade that for days/weeks of pain/discomfort and not being able to eat properly and the risks of something more permanent/severe? It is surgery after all, but feels a bit.. cosmetic

The Bridge / HHLA / Promenade at Howard Hughes (LA malls in general?)

I was at Westfield Culver City (a.k.a Fox Hills Mall for the real ball knowers) and decided I wanted to go check out HHLA (The Bridge as we used to call it growing up) right up the road wedged between Sepulveda and The 405, as I hadn't been in at least 15 years..

A complete shell of itself and a wild number of vacancies. I remember when foot traffic was booming at The Bridge. Mind you I went during the day, but it was also the weekend - Dave & Buster's, Islands and the theater carry the entire place on their backs.

Visit saddened me just a little bit in the same way that seeing all the vacancies and downturn of 3rd street promenade, the struggling Baldwin Hills Mall, and seeing the completely closed Westside Pavilion - which other nostalgia sites for me - saddened me in different ways/amounts.

It's to be expected though I guess. It's a different time for commercial retail especially on the heels of the 2020 lockdowns, a shift to more people working remotely (one of the appeals of The Bridge in particular from a real estate standpoint, I imagine, was proximity to offices/company campuses nearby which have emptied out themselves) the rise in Amazon/e-commerce and the fact that, just in general, we collectively are having a rough run in this tough economy.

Just spitballing/reflecting on LA Malls in the 2000s and wanted to lob it up for anyone else that might've been thinking along those lines and wanted to commiserate (or maybe celebrate?) the decline lol

Mosquitoes??

Everyone's favorite insect - the mosquito - seems to keep finding its way in to my apartment. At least once every week or 2, will feel the bump build on my arm, and then look around and see one of those little assholes flying around and will take it out.

I'm sure they get in because I like to have my wooden door open with just the metal screen door closed to let in some needed natural light, but growing up in LA, don't recall dealing with mosquitoes (except for some times at Kenneth Hahn Park, which funnily enough is a stone's throw away).

Just curious if anyone else has noticed an uptick in mosquito encounters in the area themselves. Was reading about some nastiness in Orange County and hoping this swarm in LA is west nile free.
