Macguffin Redux

Alright lore folks! I feel like an inordinate number of storylines (to be fair…from even my favorite era aka weatherlight/legacy era) relies overly heavily on macguffins in their storylines. The last couple years more than most it feels to me. And I get it! It’s a relatively easy way to establish stakes, as well as to not have an overly complicated narrative for younger players/readers, and also have a game piece that feels special, but even in my reading habits I am appreciating different narrative stakes and structures.

If you could be narrative designer for your own plane, a returning plane, OR retell the storyline of a set that’s already happened, how would you do it without a macguffin?

I kinda want more of a political intrigue angle but I guess that would be tougher to establish in cards.what does it look like when the stakes are either preventing or enabling the crowning of this or that monarch!
