AMA: Cross-border tax and investment planning for Americans in Canada — ask me anything

Hi everyone,

I'm Phil Hogan, a Canadian and US CPA based in Victoria, BC. I've spent over two decades working exclusively on cross-border tax and investment planning, and I've helped hundreds of clients over the years — Americans moving to Canada, US citizens who've lived here for decades, and Canadians heading back home after years in the States.

I see the same expensive mistakes over and over: Roth conversions missed before the move, 401(k)s cashed out that never should have been, TFSAs opened without understanding the US side, RRSPs and real estate mishandled on the way out. Most of these are avoidable with the right planning at the right time — usually before you move, not after.

So let's do this. Ask me anything about:

- Moving to Canada from the US (or moving back)

- IRAs, Roths, 401(k)s and what to do with them as a Canadian resident

- RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs and how the US treats them

- Dual citizen and green card holder tax issues

- CPP, OAS and Social Security across the border

- Selling US property, exit tax, renouncing, departure planning

- Investment planning when you're stuck filing in two countries

I'll answer everything I can. Obviously general information only — not personal tax, legal, or investment advice, and your specific situation may differ.

Fire away.
