Elbows Up Win

My local elbows up battle ended in a win this week. I live in a small town (6000pop) and we have 2 food retail stores to shop. The local Federated Co-Op and a Soby's affiliated Family Foods.

Both stores bring in bulk produce like corn and brussel sprouts. They will then repackage  some of it in small wrapped and weighed units. But the labels never display the country or origin,  and there is no primary shelf display panel.

I asked the managers of both outlets what the country of origin was on each product, and neither could tell me. Both managers brushed me off, and one was really rude about it.

I used the CFIA online reporting form  found on their website and filed a complaint.  I had a personal reply within 48 hours, saying they would look into it.

Yesterday, I noticed both stores now clearly displaying country of origin by placing a primary product panel with each pile of packed produce!

Stuff I learned in the process:

Open bulk produce does not require country of origin labelling.  So the big bulk boxes of corn on  the cob from Florida do not need to be declared.

But when you clean,  prep, and package it in store,  then the country of origin must be displayed either on the primary product panel or individually on the in-house label.

Asking the produce manager the country of origin of bulk produce i buy really pisses them off, but they have to disclose it when asked. If enough people keep asking, maybe they will consider voluntarily posting it and save the annoyance of people constantly asking. ;)

Information Services Corp. to be sold, netting Sask. government $277M

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/sask-isc-sale-plenary-americas-9.7205149

Information Services Corporation (ISC), commonly known as "Sask Land Titles," is being sold off to an American private corporation for $1.2 billion by the Scott Moe government.

ISC is the government land titles, corporate registry, debt, and Court Judgment Registry for all people, businesses, and farms in Saskatchewan. It holds information like business names & numbers, addresses and phone numbers, legal land descriptions of all houses, apartments, and farmland, and records of debts on major pieces of farm and construction equipment.

ISC / Land Titles was first partially privatized (sold off) under Brad Wall in 2013 with the Sask government keeping 30% of the shares. Now it is receiving $277 million, while the other 70% of the $1.2 billion sale price will go to other Canadian and foreign shareholders. Another brilliant business deal from your Sask Party government.

Plenary Americas LP, a US investment firm will acquire ISC for the $1.2 billion purchase price. That means Plenary Americas LP will own Saskatchewan information regarding land titles, debts, and court judgments.

Fees are charged on every transaction that ISC performs, such as opening a numbered business corporation, changing the name of a land title on the sale of a piece of property, and registering a court judgment.

Now those fees might go up -- way up.

More importantly, how will the private information of Saskatchewan's families and other digital information be used by Plenary Americas LP? The Sask Party sold off control, so our government essentially sold off its power to protect the private and personal information of Saskatchewan people.

Do you think it was a good idea for the Sask Party to privatize and sell off ISC?

Do you support the Sask Party government in selling off your private data to Plenary Americas LP?
