Canada embarks on largest clean energy project in North American history, cementing Canada as energy superpower.

Ottawa will provide $10 billion in financing to upgrade and expand the Churchill Falls generating station, develop the Gull Island hydroelectric project, build transmission lines and implement a 2,000 MW onshore wind energy project in Labrador — with the exact location and other details for that wind project under consideration by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

According to the federal government, altogether these projects represent the largest clean energy investment in North American history — valued at nearly $70 billion — and will nearly triple the current generating capacity of Churchill Falls, with enough power to light, heat and cool all the homes in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver combined.

Seeking advise on how to proceed

I live in a semi, and I’m going to need to do my roof at some point in the next 5-10 years (give or take).

The last time the roof was done they did not remove the old shingles, so there is a double layer that will need to be removed.

The home was built in 1999.

I’m trying to decide on how to move forward based on three different factors:

  1. I will eventually want to install solar
    - This is my families forever home, and I would like to install a solar array on the roof at some point. This is obviously a large consideration on how I move forward on other items.

  2. Shingle or Other?
    - Given this is a 25-30 year home for us, I’m torn on whether to spend the money on a steel roof or stick with traditional shingle. This is also amplified by the fact that I want to do solar panels.

  3. Ridge vent vs box vents?
    - As shown in the photo, I have a number of lower box vents. Are these meant to be for intake? I do have a large portion of my soffits that are perforated which I had assumed were the intakes.
    - Given my intent to install solar down the road, less box vents are of course better. Would this roof line appear to be a viable option for a ridge vent? Can ridge vents be done with steel roofs?

Any thoughts and input on these factors would be much appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Also curious if anyone knows how the warranty of a steel roof would be effected by installing solar on it.

Fooling a Tesla Wall Comnector

Let me start by saying this is just a point of curiosity by a few technicians messing around with some tech in the shop.

Basically, we’re curious about the ability to just stick a NACS port on whatever you want, and be able to plug an EVSE with a NACS plug head into it and charge it/transfer power.

Looking to get some thoughts and input from those who have some comprehension of the PLC protocol that Tesla uses, as well as the PWM duty cycle operation of the pilot pin on the connector.

Ninja owners, which would you get?

I have the option between two dirt cheap Ninjas and am trying to decide which to go with.

An older CP307C Hot & Iced Machine (approx 3 years)

A newer CFP301C Dual Brew Pro (approx 1 year)

Have three family members with the 307 that all love it, but no one with the Dual Brew (yet I haven’t seen any major complaints on it from brief research).

Any thought from owners on which I should go for?

This is gunna sound stupid….

Bear with me guys as I’m not a carpenter (like I even needed to say it lol).

I have a section of fence I’m building in my backyard. The panels are rough sewn white pine 1x6 T&G from the local Mennonite community, and will be trimmed out by similarly finished 1x6 and 1x8 pieces. The picture here is essentially the aesthetic I’m going for.

I really like the clean look of having all the joints around the edge caulked and sealed up tight as shown.

I’m wondering what caulk I should be using in this use case? The finish will be a dark brown solid oil based stain for reference, which is matching other structures already in the space.

Thanks all in advance. Be gentle with me.

Is the Fellow Aiden the right coffee maker for us?

So I’ve never been much of a coffee snob (I regularly buy my beans at Costco for Christ sake lol) but I definitely appreciate a good cup. Recently my wife and I have been looking at getting something new to replace our old basic Cuisinart drip coffee maker. We just need something that works for our morning routines, and I saw a lot of recommendations for the Aiden.

Weekends we are both home and each have a cup or two in the morning. Weekdays I leave at 530am and she is usually up and has a cup at 7am before doing morning routine with our toddler.

It seems the Aiden from my research will work for our single cup/small batch requirements, but is there something different we should be considering? Another factor is that my FAVOURITE coffee beans, my wife does not like. So at times, even if it’s a single cup or small batch, if I am really wanting my favourite, then will make two separate pots of coffee.

What should we be looking for that folks would recommend?

Black and White Dress - Blue Stains from soaking

My wife has a black and white dress that had a mark on which she sprayed with a spot cleaner. She then put it in our laundry tub to soak for a bit and unfortunately forgot about it until the next morning.

And now seems to have some blue staining on the white portions of the dress, almost like tie-dye.

We took it to a local dry cleaner, who said they tried to clean it and couldn’t, but I don’t know what they tried or how much effort they actually put into it.

Does anyone happen to have any recommendations on some of the more extreme methods of trying to remove these blue tie-dye like stains from the white portions of the dress?

Why have we seen no change to Public EV charging rates, even after the new adjustment by OEB?

https://electricautonomy.ca/charging/utilities/2025-12-03/oeb-ev-charging-rate-2026/

In January 2026 the OEB introduced a new rate system for public EV charging infrastructure. I don’t know about anyone else, but I personally have not seen any change in rates to account for these adjustments by OEB.

In short, there has been no benefit to the consumer by these adjustments.

Can anyone else shed any light on this?

How do I know if my compressor is toast?

GE fridge with an inverter compressor. What are tell tale signs that it’s failed? Getting too hot? Not hot at all? Making a clanking noise?

Moved my fridge out to the garage and never had an issue with it before, but now the compressor isn’t turning on and the ‘yodder loop’ in the wall of the fridge going to the in door ice maker is getting quite hot. I cleaned off the condenser loop in the back of the fridge and confirmed the condenser fan is running, but still no change.

Removing Dye Transfer on Clothing

My wife had a dress that got bird poop on it so she sprayed it with some spot treatment and left it to soak in the sink but forgot about it.

The dress is black and white (soft cream white not bright white) and it looks as though some of the black has leeched onto the white in spots and looks almost like a tie dye blue on the white now.

Local dry cleaner said the colour dye transfer like that they can do nothing about. It’s a $500 dress that my wife absolutely adores so I am hoping to save it if I can.

I’ll try to get pictures posted asap but I wanted to check here if anyone has any recommendations on removing the dye transfer. I’m perfectly fine doing any and all amount of meticulous and manual labour if needed, I just want to try and save it.

Side Wall of Fridge VERY Hot

The side wall of my GE fridge is EXTREMELY hot around these two ports going to the in door ice maker. Not hot enough to burn, but getting there. As you can see it’s discolouring the plastic.

What would be in the wall cavity here that is getting so hot?

Cleaning Washer Drum?

What is my best option for cleaning the inside of this washer drum? Unit is used so not sure of the original circumstances it was under if this is hard water staining or something else. Can I just run a bunch of vinegar in it on a hot wash or will that damage the machine?

Local Miele Service Technician?

It’s well known that it’s tough getting an appliance technician who works on Miele appliances.

I’m wondering on folks experience in Burlington and surrounding areas like Oakville and Hamilton on their experience in this regard prior to deciding if I want to go with Miele for my next washer/dryer purchase.

Commercial Units in Residential Home?

TLDR;
Two questions:
-What are folks thoughts on these units if they’ve dealt with them before
-What are the negative potentials of using commercial units in a residential property

So the current Maytag units were using are from 2014 and the main board of the washer has already started to go so we are in dire need of a replacement in the coming months/year. We are a young family so laundry is of course never-ending and being without a washer or dryer is a non-starter.

I was very keen on and looking at the newer combo heat pump units as a replacement to our current ones. GE was the first to market, but it looks like the models from Samsung and LG over the last year or two have been quite promising (surprising from those brands I know).

That being said, in my research and looking around, I found these Miele professional series, commercial grade washer and heat pump dryer units for sale on marketplace in my area. Model numbers are PWM 908 DP and PDR 908 HP. They look like excellent units in like new condition, manufactured in 2023, then according to the ad, used for six months in a wellness centre before it closed down.

From my research it looks like the washer and dryer at seperate MSRP’s go for around $17,600 CAD when brand new, and they are currently being sold as a package for both for $5,000 CAD.

Is there anything I should be worried about in regards to having commercial grade units in a residential home? The only thing I can think of would potentially be noise? The washer does require a 30A connection, but I’m a licensed electrician so that’s no issue to add that in.

Appreciate any thoughts from folks on if this is something I should pull the trigger on given the deal and that longevity and reliability are extremely important factors to me.

Business Centre Pricing

Is any of the pricing for the business centre advertised online? Also when they have the flash sales is it advertised?

Hoping to take advantage with my family of the large boxes of Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast as well as other larger bulk options we can split amongst us to immediate vac seal and freeze.

Looking for panel installer in Southern Ontario

I’m a 309A licensed electrician in Ontario, however in order to be eligible for the current $5k + $5k rebates on solar and batteries, I confirmed I need to hire a *different* licensed electrical contractor to do the installation.

Does anyone have recommendations for a solar installer in Southern Ontario that they recommend that isn’t trying to push their own product/price plan/financing/etc?

Thank you all in advance.

Can wood be too dry?

EDIT: Picture added in comments.

Please forgive me as I’m not super knowledgeable about timber frame building, and I forgot to take a picture last night so will try and add it as soon as I get home.

A friend of mine built a 16x16 foot framework for a gazebo for our backyard. He did it in Ash, with 8x8 posts/king posts, and 8x10 beams.

From the details I got from him, he picked up the timbers last year and they were still quite “wet and heavy” and they sat outside for about 9 months over the fall and winter.

When he delivered them, I noticed there was ***a lot*** of large cracking and splitting, but I know some of that can be normal as the wood dries. It seemed a bit excessive, but I didn’t think much of it until I noticed some massive cracks in one of the mortise’s of a beam. I *barely* even touched it, and the end of the mortise literally FELL OUT. The chunk was probably about 4” cubed and felt *really* light which is now making me think did the wood dry out too much?

Anyway now my wife is freaking out about the integrity of the wood and whether it’s safe. And I wanted to ask if I should have some safety concerns here or not.

I’ll get some pictures up here asap for you guys but felt I should ask first.

Credit card template listed below.

My wife and I are currently on separate MBNA WE MC accounts and have been for years, since back when it was 2% on everything. I recently got the Roger’s Red MC for our phone bill, and noticed that it is now offering what MBNA used to.

We don’t dine out much and are cutting back, and have an EV so only spend on gas for my wife’s car which isn’t a far commute, so restaurant and gas bonuses are mostly out. Groceries tends to be a big one though.

Should I just stick with the MBNA card as my main, or start utilizing the Rogers Red as my go to on all purchases? Or is there something else out there better suited to us?

Appreciate any insight and advice 🙏

So I’ll try to keep this short. The one thing I always see from repair technicians and YouTube videos is that complexity and feature bombing is the biggest reliability killer to Refrigerators.

Ice makers in the door, fridge freezer combos, flex areas, fourth doors, etc, etc, etc.

It essentially boils down to the more basic the better.

So for our future kitchen renovation coming up down the road, I’m looking at doing standalone units, a full height fridge and full height freezer, side by side, hinged towards each other like a French door. I’ve attached a picture of what it would look like.

Panel ready would be awesome, but I’m fine without it. Anyone have experience in these standard upright single purpose units and which brands do well on them? Frigidaire Professional Series has them and they looked quite good, but figured it’s best to ask the masses.

Thank you all in advance.
