If the intention is to continue with North American free trade, I'm of the opinion that there should be no trade talks outside of CUSMA. We learned that the recent talks had included an announcement of formal CUSMA renewal talks. To me, it sounds ridiculous on its face, a trade agreement that includes agreement to renegotiate an existing trade agreement. What?? This reads to me as the US government attempting a divide and conquer strategy between the non-US NAFTA signatories & it should never have been entertained. Carney had prior indicated that focus should be trilateral, even repairing the relationship with Mexico by signing a strategic partnership to align their economic approaches, so I don't quite understand why the talks were taking part in the first place. That now in the past, with it being more than evident that the US cannot be trusted to abide any agreement it enters into, I see no real benefit to engaging in any new talks outside of the CUSMA framework with Mexico alongside at the table.
