> Next morning they set out again soon after sunrise. There

was a frost in the air, and the sky was a pale clear blue. The

hobbits felt refreshed, as if they had had a night of unbroken

sleep.

> By night they had reached the feet of the westward

slopes, and there they camped. It was the night of the fifth

of October, and they were six days out from Bree.

(Notice, date is mentioned clearly, not idly that happens, from what i can recall now next date will be mentioned by gandalf when frodo awake in House of Elrond. in book2 of volume 1)

HIGHLIGHTS

> Already they were getting used to much walking on

short commons – shorter at any rate than what in the Shire

they would have thought barely enough to keep them on their

legs. Pippin declared that Frodo was looking twice the hobbit

that he had been.

‘Very odd,’ said Frodo, tightening his belt, ‘considering

that there is actually a good deal less of me. I hope the

thinning process will not go on indefinitely, or I shall become

a wraith.’

‘Do not speak of such things!’ said Strider quickly, and

with surprising earnestness.

(Most peculiar and bizarre observation, i dont believe frodo was getting bulkier)

EVENTS

T.A. 3018:

- The Black Riders reach Sarn Ford at evening and drive off the guard of Rangers.

- Gandalf overtakes Shadowfax.

- Frodo celebrates his birthday with Fredegar, Merry, Pippin and Folco during which he finishes the Baggins's Old Winyards. After a lot of food and songs they drink to Bilbo's health.

- Boromir travels towards Rivendell to ask for counsel.

T.A. 3001:

- Bilbo turns 111 and throws the Farewell Party at which he announces his intention to leave the Shire. He leaves behind the One Ring and sets off with Nar, Anar and Hannar.

- Frodo turns 33 and comes of age. He inherits Bag End and all the things Bilbo leaves behind.

(Quite a long event in books, It begins with the party and whoopee hobbits were having, with many attractions. And ends with a shocker from Old Bilbo. Then Conversation of gandalf and bilbo and at the end frodo contemplating about Bilbo's plan and obliging his painful duty of bidding adieu to the guests)

> Then Thursday, September the 22nd, actually dawned. The sun got up, the clouds vanished, flags were unfurled and the fun began.

> As master of Bag End Frodo felt it his painful duty to say good-bye to the guests. Rumours of strange events had by now spread all over the field, but Frodo would only say no doubt everything will be cleared up in the morning. About midnight carriages came for the important folk. One by one they rolled away, filled with full but very unsatisfied hobbits. Gardeners came by arrangement, and removed in wheelbarrows those that had inadvertently remained behind.

> Thursday, his birthday morning, dawned as fair and clear as it had long ago for Bilbo’s great party. Still Gandalf did not appear.

Today is the first dated event in Lotr books, noticeably deductible date events.

Gandalf arrives at Bag End, and unlike in movies. He denies hobbit-children for fireworks, not even a single squib.

In verbatim

> ‘Run away now!’ said Gandalf. ‘You will get plenty when

the time comes.’ Then he disappeared inside with Bilbo, and the door was shut. The young hobbits stared at the door in vain for a while, and then made off, feeling that the day of the party would never come.

Ps: This is a project i did few months ago. I have sorted texts in my Books according to dates using sticky notes. So now the first line and last line of that date is clear, a distinct line where that days event ends. And im very excited to share it fellowfans

i found this pristine edition in my city library, but apart than delipidated. It does not have its original binding nor dust jacket nor maps at the end. And its missing some chapters , not pages but chapters. TT

i was very enthralled to see first edition but those points ruins its fun.
