Managed to unlock my Poco X3. Ubuntu Touch is next

Hello everybody. First post here. So, this might not seem like much to many of you but I finally managed to unlock my Poco X3.

I bought it last year in September, with the explicit intention of installing UT on it. I’ve been putting off the task of unlocking the bootloader because I’m a Linux/macOS user and the tools I tried back then to unlock it did not work and I did not have easy access to a Windows computer. Well, today I finally decided to do it, thinking it wouldn’t take long and borrowing a friend’s Windows laptop to do it. In the end it took 3 hours and I ended up doing it on my Linux machine anyway because the only tool I found that worked is the MiUnlockTool from https://github.com/offici5l and the drivers situation on Windows was pretty messy to say the least.

I’m super satisfied now but it’s absurd that such a seemingly simple task should be so complex, especially since Xiaomi’s own tools kept failing, being outdated, not working properly.

Has anybody here had a similar experience?

MacBook Air 2020 Intel with CachyOS

Hello there! This is my MacBook Air 2020, Intel model dual booting with CachyOS. I struggled with a couple of things but so far it seems to all be working:

  • Suspend works. It loses around 10% battery overnight, which seems ok to me (on a battery that’s at 79% health)
  • WiFi and Bluetooth all good
  • I managed to map the few keys that didn’t work (keyboard backlight, App Library) thanks to keyd

I went with the Cosmic Desktop because I wanted something new and different. It’s definitely not as feature rich as Plasma, but it works.

Overall, very satisfied. It’s definitely more responsive and runs cooler (I barely hear the fan now and I can adjust it any way I like) than on macOS (it’s an old install, maybe installing it new would improve things?). I almost feel like it’s a new computer again!

MacBook Air Intel 2020 no WiFi before installation

Hello all,

I'm having problems installing CachyOS on my 2020 MacBook Air. I can't get the wifi to work (and therefore cannot proceed with the installation). I followed the guide on https://wiki.cachyos.org/installation/installation_t2macbook/ to set up the wifi but then in the applet there are no networks available. I do not know what the problem is. I have a feeling it has to do with the iwd backend, although I followed the instructions to change that too (hopefully correctly).

Anybody has experienced the same issue or is able to help me?

Dear all,

I hope this is the right place to ask for this kind of advice. I am 38 and I spent my whole career working in the food&beverage industry (all the way from McDonald's to restaurant manager). On the side, I have a master's in American literature and a never completed PhD also in American Literature. Also on the side I have dabbled in coding (mostly Python, basic CS, some data science).

Now, after being laid off from my last job and realizing that it is not what I want to do, I am looking for a career change. Unfortunately my American lit studies are not very easy to turn into a real job, especially where I live. Therefore, I am thinking about turning to coding and giving it one last serious try.

The question is: how realistic would it be for me to become job-ready on my own? The path I would take is data science with a focus on NLP (since it interests me and I believe that my studies in language and literature would help me here). I exclude web dev because I've been there and it's so not my thing.

Second question: which resources should I use in order to learn? In the past I've used almost exclusively Codecademy, which I like, but I know there are probably better options out there for somebody like me.

I know that nobody can really tell me whether I'll make it or not. I'm just trying to gather some experience around the job field so that I can set realistic expectations for myself.

For context, I live in Austria, if that's relevant.
