Need advice: energy/communal heating company refusing to close my account without landlord confirmation, what should I do?
Moved out of a rented apartment on March 1st and contacted my communal heating/electricity provider (Yuno Energy Heat) to close my account from that date.
They’re refusing to close it unless I get my landlord/agency to confirm my move-out date.
Problem is:
\* My contract was only with the provider, not the landlord
\* The landlord is refusing to get involved and also doesn’t want their details shared
\* The landlord says they have no legal obligation to confirm anything and that the provider shouldn’t be asking for it
I already gave them my move-out date and requested final billing up to that point, but they’re insisting on landlord confirmation before they’ll close the account.
Their response basically says: “we can’t process closure without confirmation from the property.”
I’ve pushed back asking for the legal/regulatory basis for this requirement and told them I’ll escalate a formal complaint if needed.
My question is:
Can a utility/communal heating provider in Ireland actually require landlord confirmation to close an account? Or is this them overstepping?
And if they refuse to close it, is CRU the correct place to escalate?
Any advice appreciated.
