Sailing and motor yacht crew

I know this is probably not the best sub for it but do you have any recommendations on where to find crew jobs on sailing or motor yachts?

I come from a high-end restaurant and private aviation background so I’m familiar with the lifestyle and desires of the client. Unfortunately I can’t fly anymore so I’m looking to move into something like that.

I’m also a dive instructor and have experience in the polar regions which I understand is desirable as well but I don’t know where to start.

Edit to add: I am a cicerone and certified beer judge as well as having limited experience sailing on lakes.

Facility tours in Canada

Is it at all possible for an American pilot to get a tower tour in Canada? My friend and I are both airline pilots in the US and were intrigued when we found out Vancouver Harbour was a controlled aerodrome.

Hot and fast recipe

May be a strange request but I’m in search of a recipe, probably a smash beer, that will ferment warm and fast ready to drink fresh in a week.

This is entirely an experiment I’m doing to take to Airventure in Wisconsin next week. Fermenting at ambient temperatures (76°F inside, outside temp towards the end) and drinking next Friday. Temp control is limited to my house the first few days, the car driving, and shade inside the camper.

I won’t be terribly upset if it doesn’t turn out because it’s a last minute thing but figured I’d ask

Edit to add: I plan to do a 2.5 gallon batch. About 3 days of temp control indoors, 7 hours in a car, then the rest of the time before serving would be outdoors or in a camper without temp control. Any “cold crashing” would be an ice bucket

Weather needs to be a significantly higher priority fix

I should be getting my sh*t rocked in this storm system with tops to 560 and it’s completely clear and smooth. This isn’t even a past couple days issue, it’s been more than a month since 12.4.3 broke the weather and all we can get is a long term road map with VR updates being a higher priority.

Corny keg repair

I purchased another used corny keg and while restoring it found a tiny hairline crack near the base during a pressure test.

What’s the best way to seal that up? I know a welder that works on pressure vessels that I could potentially ask but would something like JB weld work for an easier fix?

Edit to add: it was in a dent from normal wear and tear

Homebrew Contests

When did you decide your brews were “good enough” for home brewing contests? I’ve got two that I’m really proud of. They turned out significantly better than I expected and have gotten really good reviews from everyone that’s tried them including professional brewers and bartenders, both in categories that won’t likely have many entries. My biggest hesitation in just entering them is that they are my second and third ever brews and the third is the first I’ve ever done myself from conception to product.

Logically I know the only thing I have to lose is $15 but for being so new it’s incredibly intimidating

Obtaining a release via phone

At one of my local untowered airports, it’s not uncommon for the published clearance delivery frequency to not work, depending on where you are on the airfield or other reasons. On several occasions, I’ve been departing this airport and go to get a release via the phone and the call just sits ringing for 7-8 minutes before disconnecting. On my last flight out of this airport this happened and me and the other pilot decided to do an experiment while mine was ringing for several minutes the third time, he called on his phone and was immediately connected with the controller/sup.

I definitely understand it ringing for a minute or two if it went to the control position and not a sup desk for them to knock out a few tasks or if someone else was getting a clearance but three calls of 7-8 minutes each ringing baffled us.

Are there any tech ops people or controllers who might know what could be happening with this situation?

CTAF in VATPAC

Here is your reminder that CTAF in the Australia Pacific region starts 1 June.

USE THE PROPER CTAF FREQUENCY AS PUBLISHED ON THE CHART. 122.8 is NOT the proper frequency unless SPECIFICALLY listed on the chart.

Also remember you can and will be walloped for not using the proper frequency if you cause issues

This applies in the US, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, and now Australia and the Pacific

CO2 cylinder hydrostatic test

I bought a CO2 cylinder from a guy on Facebook that was about half full but it several years out of date on its hydro. Is it better to pay for a hydro and fill or swap at a gas company? My local scuba shop won’t hydro this style of tank.

If you have any recommendations in the greater Indianapolis area even better.

Edit to add: I’m used to paying for hydros for my scuba cylinders so I don’t mind paying if it is cheaper in the long run.

Grodziskie fermentation profile

Wanted to get some feedback on my Grodziskie profile. I’m 4 beers into my homebrewing journey and slowly working my way towards making my own full recipe of something. The three AHA recipes essentially follow the modern ale profile of set one high temp and let it go for 2 weeks but the little I can find in historical documents from Grodzisk suggest it was a multi temp process over 6-10 days.

What I came up with is: pitch at 54°F for 2 days, 59°F for 2 days, 64°F 2 days, 68°F 3 days, cold crash 2-3 days, package and carb, cold condition in the keg for around 2 weeks.

Historical accuracy and quality matters a lot more than fast turnaround. I’m tapping a wood cask conditioned dark lager from November next weekend for an Indy 500 cookout.

Edit to add: my profile was based on the little information I could find from old documentation from Grodzisk and their open vat fermentation.

For those of you who have homebrewed a “commercial” recipe, how did you figure out the grain bill if you couldn’t get the actual recipe from the brewery?

Through my travels I’ve been lucky enough to have been given five or so recipes of some of my favorites around the world but none of the brewers were around to talk to for the one I want to recreate next.
