Anybody missing this cute cat? Just a friendly cat strolling around and talking in the middle of the night at the crossing of Winzererstraße and Heßstraße in Maxvorstadt. I didn’t think much of it until this morning. Didn’t look lost but didn’t have a collar or something.

According to the RSF Index, press freedom in both the Republic of Cyprus and the Northern Administration is classified as "problematic (in light orange)," with both areas falling significantly below the European average though not nearly in the last place. While the Republic of Cyprus is hampered by the influence of the Orthodox Church, media ownership concentration, and a culture of self-censorship regarding the "Cyprus issue," the Northern Administration faces severe pressure from Türkiye, including criminal proceedings against critical journalists and economic instability linked to the Turkish lira. Despite their different political challenges, both regions share a common landscape of verbal harassment toward reporters, non-transparent financial dependencies, and a "duty of loyalty" that frequently stifles independent investigative journalism.
Cyprus has shown a steady decrease in press freedom for years where around in 2020, it had a similar ranking compared to Western Euopre while the North's press freedom has been changing drastically in both directions, this year increasing in the rank from 91 to 82, though as said before, it is more dependent on outside forces with no clear trend showing.
P.S. It should be noted that the RSF Index is not a general freedom index. So, some rankings might be surprising. Looking at trends over the years rather than one specific year is a better indicator for a country's press freedom. Still, the data is used by the World Bank and the UN.
