The best villain/villain group
I think that every villain/villain group in walking dead has something going for it. Each one is someone’s favourite, most people agree that Negan is the best but I can’t really rank them tbh.
The Governor is genuinely terrifying and one of the most disgusting and evil villains I’ve seen in fiction, I don’t think anyone can argue against that. Kirkman went all out when showing how vile the Governor truly is; >!Murder, mutilation, rape, feeding people to roamers, making out with his zombified niece, staring at his decapitated head collection for hours on end. !<The list goes on. Overall he was a horrifying villain but that’s what makes him great. >!The dread I felt seeing him still alive at the end of volume 7 was amazing.!<
The hunters were a much smaller group than the others and might not really count as major villains but I still really enjoyed them. Fear the hunters is my favourite volume, the hunters showed us how dangerous the outside world still is and how hardened the group had became. >!One of my favourite moments is when Chris tells Rick that the hunters used to have kids and seeing Rick’s disgusted face as he realises how evil they are. Also the way the hunters were killed was so chilling, we never actually see it happen, theres just some quick panels of weapons stained with blood and a body being tossed into fire. !<Even though the hunters weren’t the biggest threat, that arc is one of my favourites in the whole series.
And then there’s Negan, what is there to say which hasn’t already been said, he’s a brilliant character, unpredictable psychopath, and the >!only ‘main villain’ to actually survived.!<>!The way Negan’s character ended was perfect, I hate how they tried to give him a redemption arc in the show. Turning him into a good guy really rubbed some show fans the wrong way as it could never undo all the pain he caused. In the comics he gets a second chance at life and he takes it, killing Alpha was quite literally his get out of jail free card. His fate after the end of the comics is mostly left up to interpretation and I love that.!< The savior arc is another of my favourite parts of the comic, there were a lot of cool battle tactics from both sides. The saviors themselves were a really formidable threat, >!they managed to kill off a few fan favourite characters and decimated Alexandria.!<Not only is Negan a great villain, but he is a top 5 character imo.
Finally there’s the Whisperers, these guys get the award for coolest concept in the series.>!The idea of people wearing human skin as camouflage is really creative. Their ability to command massive herds of zombies was really interesting too.!<I think interesting is the best way to describe the Whisperers, their way of living was fascinating to me and it kinda makes sense that after all this time people would start to lose faith in civilisation. Alpha was cool but was kinda wasted potential, she wasn’t my favourite villain but she was interesting enough. Like Negan she was very unpredictable, >!after seeing her crying while sending Lydia away I felt bad for her, It was then revealed that seconds ago she had killed 12 innocent people and stuck their decapitated heads on spikes. After this I was really excited to see what she was capable of next, and then she dies. Her death was good but I feel like we should’ve seen more of her before that. !<
Beta has a similar issue but I think he achieved more in the time he had than Alpha did. Beta didn’t have the most interesting personality but he made up for that in personality and design. He aura farmed with every line and is a personal favourite character of mine just by being cool. His backstory was really interesting and made me consider what it would be like in our world >!if a celebrity became a savage monster after an apocalypse. Some parts of the whisperer conflict were disappointing though. It was weird how they was no actual whisperers invading Alexandria, they should of sent a couple inside to go open doors of houses and let the roamers inside. Also Beta’s death was one of the worst parts of the comics for me, why keep him alive after the war if you were just going to kill him off anyway? They should’ve had him be pushed off of the cliff with the rest of the herd, being killed by his own army of undead would’ve been super poetic.!<I still love Beta and the whisperers though, really interesting villains that came with their own unique survival strategie.
Anyway, I just wanted to rant about a few villains for a bit because I like them all in their own way. I didn’t include a couple of them either because I don’t consider them main antagonists or interesting enough to analyse (Sherry for example). Its fun to see other people’s opinions on certain characters.
