A REALITY CHECK -- !!
So, this is actually a reality-check post...
I will give an honest opinion on every aspect that's generally being asked by the newcomers.
If you consider joining the college, what you would see actually... would you be disappointed? or would you rather be happy? Let's see...
>Placements & Internships : - I would start directly with placements and Alumni connection. In one line if i were to say, not that great, the recent years has seen downfall in placements, though our college only includes on-campus stats(correct me if i am wrong seniors and fellow-mates). Internships if i talk about, one can do internship if he or she is willing, has the skill set to join an internship, this year, i personally know people who are joining as interns in there first year itself from our college. Grind hard if you come here you would get a good off-campus, or even on-campus(but yea it has declined). This could be better be stated by the current seniors or even alumni.
>Alumni Connection : - A huge and a vast alumni network exists, no doubt in that the alumni in connection are helpful. Connect and reach out to them, many are placed at really good places. Research and Search more you would understand better.
>Scholarships & Fees : - If you are in a need for scholarships, there are plenty of private scholarship the college's very own GAABESU Scholarship also exists. That won't be an alarming problem for you.
>Pollution : - When you enter through the area of Howrah and then come towards Shibpur, land pollution exists a lot, its too crowded, its a thing you wont like to see... inside the campus there is no pollution its clean inside but yea its not that clean outside of the campus. The air is polluted, as you expect form a crowded place.
>Campus : - The Campus infrastructure is old, not that great, (ofc imagine a college since the 1870s' , what we can do ? ). There are pre-independence, British era buildings inside the campus, a lot of British architecture exists. The Halls & Hostels are old. The hostels are being renovated, and its improving, the conditions have improved. The campus is lush green. A lot of infrastructural development is taking place, in a year actually we saw a lot of it. The college IS WORKING ON IT.
>The Auditorium : - The college doesn't have a shiny big auditorium, an auditorium exists but don't expect it do be like the auditoriums present in other colleges, ours is small and old, an auditorium is being built in the campus but yea it would take time, maybe 2 or 3 years down the lane.
>Politics : - Don't worry you won't be affected by the politics of the state or communalism or riot anywhere inside the campus, no political pressure is observed inside, but yea if you talk about politics in general among students, it's quiet obvious to exists. This politics is unavoidable it exists everywhere.
>Ragging : - There is no such high level brutal ragging or something, these things doesn't exists and nobody can rag you on any basis. The laws are strict. There exists this culture of asking an "INTRO" some people don't even care about this but there are some retards those people would be asking intro in a way that you won't like, shout at you maybe, tell you to speak loudly, and stuff, ignore them. IGNORE THEM SIMPLY. I can't assure you won't meet such people but yes we are trying our level best to eliminate this INTRO "SOFT RAGGING" culture. Introducing yourself to someone and taking your intro are two different things. While taking intro they don't give a f** of your name or anything they are just doing this for their self satisfaction. Taking out the frustration of the previous batch. Don't worry nothing happens. IGNORE.
There's then the HALL Freshers, and the Freshers (they hold no value sorry... your freshers won't be in some filmy style way... it's way different than what you think :| )
>Student Culture : - Talking about this, there are AMBITIOUS people in our college, people are really ambitious to do something, achieve something, the problem that occurs, the drive exists for a month or two and then its all gone, the learning curve is not smooth, its highly curved, (people tend to bypass it and feel that they would succeed... MARK MY WORDS, YOU WON'T) smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. One has to grind, feel the pain of learning, your JEE journey - was that smooth? NO!, it was tough, it has to be.
The clubs are reviving, people are working, the clubs are great do join them you will socialize, apart from academics you should be involved in some or other of extra curricular activities.
Approach the seniors, yea not all are good, you after joining would eventually understand whom to approach whom not to. There are some genuinely good people who would help you out. The students are trying to improve this part.
>Bengali Culture : - The Bengali culture is dominant ofc as you are in Bengal so you would observe the culture. How the culture is it's upto oneself how he or she observes understands feels about some culture nobody can make someone like a culture or dislike, yes professors would start speaking in bengali sometimes, yes you would have bengali friends, no not everybody is busy eating non-veg and fish, nobody is doing "kala jadoo" chill 😂 . Enjoy the Durga Puja, enjoy the festivals you would encounter a lot of festival, enjoy bengali cuisine.
>Hostels : - The hostels are mehhh... its renovating, we were the witnessers, it's condition has improved a lot, it has changed. The food is ofc meh... The accomodation for hostels the firsts round demands a distance minmum of 150kms ig? and it narrows down to 15km at the end of the year. You would get a really good experience.
>Fests' : -A lot of fests, seriously a lot of them are there i can't name all of them. The main fest being REBECA, a really old fest, the fest is great the fest nights are great, you would enjoy this part you won't miss it. 4 nights of REBECA are great.
>Travelling & places to visit : - There are plenty of places to visit, really plenty of places, search yourself, find a good group and companion, roam those areas, you would definitely enjoy, travelling gives you the best of life lessons, it teaches you a lot. Kolkata itself nearby is a good hangout spot.
>Sports : - The sports culture, is there, we PARTICIPATE IN INTER-NIT's. There are sports club. The April month is completely a sports seasons. Hall and Hostel tournaments are there in the even semesters. Every Facility of sport is nearly there except a proper badminton court. If you aspire for academy wise sports, Kolkata you would find many national level sporting academies. Gym exists in college, 3 to 4 within 1 km of radius outside.
>Accessibility : - Accessible to any place in India. Vast network no need to worry about that, you can reach anywhere from here, go anywhere from here. Everything, starting from blinkit, zomato, swiggy, e-comerece, all are easily accessible. Hospitals nearby, Kolkata nearby, just outside campus you will get everything you need.
This was an overall review of everything, I tried my best to sum-up everything, all the doubts in short. More details you wanna ask can ask in the comments, dm the people in the sub-reddit know more, don't choose blindly, see all the aspects, check everything and then decide to go to join a college. It's you future not ours. It's you who are gonna shape it not us. Nobody is going to spoon feed you throughout your life. You have to strive, fight, and struggle alone.
BEST OF LUCK : )
and yea BEST OF LUCK FOR JEE-ADVANCE26' ~~
