IIEST shibpur counsiling issue

I am writing to seek clarification regarding my IIEST application. Unfortunately, I missed the payment of ₹500 for the counseling process today. I am concerned if I will be considered ineligible for the counseling round because of this missed payment. Could you please let me know if I will be disqualified or if there is any way I can rectify this—such as reapplying with a new registration or any other solution?

Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to your guidance.

I am writing to inform you that I did not receive any option to pay the registration fee of ₹500 during the registration process. Because of this, I am unable to complete my registration.

I kindly request you to look into this issue and guide me on how I can proceed with the payment. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your response.

If I didn't pay the fees for registration why am I allowed to submit the registration

They should have tell me for preview or further verification

Or recheck

Hlp me guys

If college did not fund your projects, we might be able to help. (we are starting a grants pool!)

Hey r/iiests

tldr: we will fund your non-cs projects, and connect you with people. FPGA boards, 3d printers etc. are on us.

I am an incoming second year student. Last year, I wanted to join the robotics club, but pretty quickly realised it wasn't really worth my time. There's no funding for personal projects, and no real drive to aggressively make things either.

I assume a lot of you have a version of this story.

Now I get it. If you're not doing CS, or your thing needs physical components, the current Indian engineering landscape isn't really tuned for that. Money is a problem, so are resources, and so are the people who'd want to build things with you AND not quit when shit gets tough.

Institutional funding exists on paper, but "on paper" and "before you lose interest" are very different timelines, and none of us can sustain interest if funding takes a whole semester to process.

The point I want to make is:

  1. Real engineering happens in the physical world. Software gets all the limelight because it's cheaper to get started with.

  2. Physical stuff needs more resources and money.

  3. It needs a feedback loop from likenminded people.

  4. And it needs good connections with people already making cool stuff (think engineers at pixxel.space, unitree, etc.) to get good insights.

But institutional bureaucracy and bloated club/society dynamics aren't getting you the tools or equipment in time. So, taking matters into our own hands, a couple of friends and I are willing to build a maker grants pool.

We would rather help 2 people make something cool than end up spending that money on a mechanical keyboard(s) or diet coke which we don't need.

We'll help you bootstrap prototypes and connect you with people from our own network. In return, you just need to document whatever you build, and make a pledge to pay it forward at least once in your lifetime.

We'll operate extremely lean (no GS, treasurer, club leads, or any of that bullshit). Instead of an application process, we'll just have two conversations with you, anywhere on campus you want. Online communities don't really work for this.

We NEED the offline adrenaline.

Yes, we're basically a16z, but in a foetal stage, with no strings attached.

Word of mouth works best, so do reach out! (dm me, or shoot an email at admin@grafitelab.in) Or let any of your friends know about us.

grafitelab.in

We're maxing out operations from August, and our main targets are the '29 and '30 batches.

Cheers.

Note: Aim is to help 2 people (minimum) get a jumpstart, yes only 2. I live in an apartment near the first gate, if needed will convert my room to a shared workspace for electronics/mechanical stuff. Money comes from our own stipends/prizes and grants.

Unexplained creepy experience in college campus

There is an abandoned overgrown building on campus that I am sure you have all seen, just behind Lt. Williams. Anyone who has laid eyes on it can tell at first glance something is off. But so far I haven’t found anyone who can explain what that is. I will now attempt to do precisely that

To start off, if you have roamed around campus you must have seen a lot of cats and a lot of dogs, but there is this one cat which stands out exceptionally from the rest. So along the Neem lake(i found out its called Neem lake from google maps) there is this road which has all the PG hostels on one side and it ends at the Downing Hall(big red old building) near the 3rd gate. About a month and a half ago while walking along that road during a daily campus stroll I came across this cat which was just sitting at the turning where the road starts, and it eerily looked as if it was waiting for something and someone. Very uncharacteristic of cats, I would say. Yet, it was nothing so unnatural that it would stand out so I ignored it and started walking along aforementioned road. Now as soon as I stepped onto the road, I saw the cat get up and start walking. Now what happened next was slightly unnerving due to the fact that the cat seemed to be shadowing me exactly along the width of the road, as if it was trying to hide behind me or something. And when i turned around and stopped to look at it, it stopped too and made eye contact with me! it did not move till i moved and this was definitely not something i expected or still expect a stray feline to do. I even took some pictures of the cat which are attached below. I kept walking and took a turn at a corner along Downing Hall where there is a small open field. I saw 4-5 dogs relaxing there, all of them were just lying down and not bothering anyone or anything.

Now if you ever noticed then you’d see intraspecies fights are common among stray animals inside the campus, such as dogs fighting other dogs or cats fighting other cats. dogs are highly territorial after all. but nearly no dog and cats ever fight each other, mostly because the dogs dont consider cats to be a threat or an intrusion on their territory.

However, the cat had followed me to that location and as soon as they saw it, all of the dogs stood up in unison, their ears pricking up, and for a whole 4 seconds they just froze while looking at the cat. then ALL of them just started raising hell and barking like crazy at the cat and they all SPRINTED towards it aggressively barking. I was admittedly a bit scared of the dogs but they seemed to ignore me totally and went after the cat, but the cat just ran back to the path it started following me from, and the dogs surprisingly did not chase the cat further than that corner along downing hall. This surprised me for as i have mentioned before, i have never seen dogs fight cats in campus. and the way they all were just relaxing, and the dogs appeared to be petrified upon seeing the cat for a whole 5 seconds before madly chasing it away was indeed somewhat chilling.

Now i decided (somewhat unwisely now that im reflecting back on it) to catch up to the cat on that road along Neem lake where i first came across it, and I soon found it walking along the road, totally unphased by my presence following it. Normally the sound of footsteps are enough to send cats frantically sprinting across the road, but not this one. After following it long enough, I found that it rests inside the abandoned building behind Lt. Williams which from now on I will refer to as Building C for convenience.(picture of building C attached). I decided to call it a day and walked away from there.

Now a few days back I went to college during the session break because of some official work involving fees payment and scholarships and all along with a few of my friends who had some work too. We had decided to get all our work done on the same day and then roam the campus for a bit. Now we all returned to the same spot near building C and unwisely, we decided to go inside because we were probably seeking some adventure. At great risk to our clothes we found our way inside via a small clearing in the overgrowth, and I saw a box like structure made of bricks with about 5 dead pigeons on it. The walls had small but eerie drawings of stick figures with what seemed like decapitated heads made with what looked either like dried blood or old brown paint. They were really small and drawn on like about a (30cm x 30cm) square on the wall? Slightly scared but determined to get a good look, I moved forward a little bit and immediately ran out of there after seeing a corpse of what was supposed to be a dog. However the corpse looked fresh, as if the dog was just sleeping. there were no cuts, no signs of decomposition, no parts missing or anything. it was just obviously dead, because it was lying still and not breathing with its eyes wide open in a rather uncomfortable posture. We were so freaked out we ran out of the building and did not wait to get any pictures and just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. as soon as we left the abandoned structure, I saw Cat sitting there next to the building calmly and just staring at us, as if it was waiting for us to vacate its personal residence.

The arrows show the direction in which I was moving, the green line shows where the cat was chased away from

Has someone experienced anything creepy/paranormal in campus?

i am curious since it is such an old college with so many buildings, are there any haunted buildings particularly? is there any connection to the occult somewhere in the campus? tantra or something? has anyone personally experienced or heard about someone experiencing anything paranormal in campus? especially around the area near the neem lake and madhusadan bhavan?

Suggest one change you would want in IIEST that you think would directly relate to the growth of this institute in terms of placement, nirf ranking , better environment, better clubs everything in general.

Try not to repeat the points for max ideas

A Letter to the Would-be BEings

My Dear Juniors / Would-be Juniors,

As I write this on July 1, 2026, I am a 3rd-year student in the Civil Engineering department at IIEST Shibpur. I look out at our campus, and I don’t just see the present; I see a bridge connecting 1856 to the future. I am writing this as a senior who feels the weight and the pride of our 170 year old legacy.

You are joining an institution that has survived more than most will ever endure. Our journey began in the humble halls of the Writers’ Building in then Calcutta back in 1856 as the Civil Engineering College, Calcutta. In 1880, we moved to our current home in Shibpur, carrying the torch of technical education forward. By 1921, we became the iconic “Bengal Engineering College”, later evolving into Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in 2004, and finally, in 2014, becoming an Institute of National Importance (under NITSER Act), IIEST Shibpur.

We have weathered shifts in governance, changes in names, and the inevitable passage of time. Through every “hazard” and transition, we stood tall. When you walk through our gates, you are stepping into a story that is nearly two centuries old. In 2031, we will celebrate our 175th anniversary. That is not just a number; it is a testament to resilience.

Our alumni have literally built the skeleton of modern India. Beyond the legendary Sir R.N. Mookerjee, whose vision shaped iconic structures like the Victoria Memorial and the Howrah Bridge and the world-renowned Fazlur Rahman Khan, the “Einstein of structural engineering” who redefined skyscrapers, our halls have produced countless other pioneers. From those who steered our early public works to those who lead global research today, our graduates have been the silent architects of our nation’s progress.

But let’s be honest — the prestige of an institution is a living thing. When NIRF rankings began in 2016, we held a strong position until 2019. Since then, we have slipped from the top 20 to the 50s. This decline has affected our perception and, at times, our placement landscape. We are often pushed to the back rows, forced to prove that we are still the same powerhouse that once defined engineering excellence.

To any observer, it might look like our glory has dimmed. But to those of us who call this place home, we know this is a temporary phase. And this too shall pass!

I know some colleges that were once far behind us have now surged ahead in the race for rankings. While we can argue about the efficiency of these metrics, we cannot ignore them. But I want to offer you a different perspective:

>History does not remember those who merely witnessed greatness, it remembers those who helped to create it.

Anyone can choose an institution when it is fashionable, celebrated, and at the height of its reputation. But it takes vision to recognize the value of a 170-year-old legacy when its next chapter is waiting to be written. The true test of belief is not standing beside greatness in its golden age, but contributing to its resurgence when the path ahead is uncertain.

I strongly believe we can bring back our lost glory. The lifeblood of any institution is its students and its alumni.

I think of it this way: if there is potential within me, if there is potential within you, then our college has potential too. I firmly beleive that we have the capability and we have the opportunity to bounce back. In fact, I am already seeing the early signs of a royal comeback in the very near future.

But it will not happen on its own. We have to try — with all our might. We need to shift our focus toward research, that's the domain we lack. And I don’t mean doing research just for the sake of publishing a paper. We need to focus on research that has a genuine real-world impact — work that influences the future and integrates seamlessly with tomorrow’s technology.

Every great institution has faced moments of challenge; what defines its future is the generation that refuses to let its legacy fade. At IIEST Shibpur, you are not just joining one of India’s oldest engineering institutions — you are becoming part of a story that began in 1856 and whose most remarkable chapters may still lie ahead.

We need to work shoulder-to-shoulder, not just to pass exams, but to restore the reputation of a giant that is currently taking a rest. The question is not whether this legacy is great; the question is whether you have the courage and conviction to help shape its next golden age. We are building the future, one brick at a time, toward our 175th year and beyond.

Welcome home. Let’s make IIESTS great again!

With hope and determination,

A Senior Who Believes in Us!

>Wakt kabhi wapas nhi aata, usko wapas lana padhta hai!

This video gives me immense kick whenever I watch this.

I’m not sure how you all will react to my above written note, but as a senior, it is my responsibility to urge you to look beyond instant glory and current rankings. When choosing between a 170-year-old institution like IIEST and newer NITs that may currently have higher placements, I want you to think in the long term. Warren Buffett wouldn't be who he is today if he hadn't prioritized long-term value over short-term gains. Remember you are stepping into a legacy. With an alumni base spanning over 170 years, there is hardly a prominent company in India and beyound where our seniors aren't holding leadership positions. Think about your future, the strength of your network and the enduring value of this institution.

I am getting IIEST CST. Need some advice plss

So I was expecting to get it in round 4 or 5, but I have it now somehow.

The seniors have been really helpful in this subreddit. I just wanted to know if they think the college is improving or regressing in terms of placements, academics, and club activities. And what the placements were like this year in CST, as there is no data.

I will be a day scholar as the college is an hour away from my home. Do you think I should be aware of anything else?

Side Note: I have a chance of getting NIT DGP ECE; should I take that into consideration? I am not that interested in the hardware side, and placements are also down.
