I recently acquired an S&W 1854 with the gold bead front sight and the XS Ghost Ring rear sight. I love the gun but so far the jury's still out on the sights.

I find the bead on the front sight difficult to see, but I can probably fix that with a dab of red paint. My bigger problem is that the diameter of the Ghost Ring rear sight is so large that it's difficult for me to tell when I have the front and rear sights aligned. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Is there a specific technique I can practice to account for the large rear sight diameter?

Failing that, does anyone have a recommendation for a different rear sight?
