Proper gusset and connecting plate on HSS vertical bracing connection
I've come up with this issue with engineering more than one time when doing connection design, so I come here to hear from any guidance or advice with this, as I haven't found any detail showing the proper (or advised) way of detailing connections like this.
All 3 options will have a small eccentricity and a corresponding moment in one of the connecting members, but the question is, which option is the most proper for cases like this?
(I've added different colors to easy identification of members. Light gray is the plate welded to the HSS. Dark gray is the gusset plate)
- Option A, Gusset plate aligned with supporting member CL. Connecting Plate offset on the HSS.
- Option B, Both gusset plate and connecting plate offset, but interface between both, aligned with supporting member CL.
- Option C, HSS and connecting plate, aligned with supporting member CL. Gusset plate is offset.
