Saying I love you to your dog

I was petting my dog and telling him I love him and realized is it weird to say I love you to an animal that doesn't understand the impact of it? Well I wouldn't use the word weird but more like is it even important or necessary does the dog get happy or is it just something we say to our animals knowing they can't understand? Because I actually never thought about that deeply i just always said i love you to my dog because i do but should I even say it to him if doesn't make him happy hearing it? do non-dog owners think it weird? I don't know i feel like its interesting that we say it in the first place. Is this a dumb post? What you guys think?

edit: i see Some people are getting a little upset in the comments so I wanna clarify i will continue to say, I love you to my dog. but the purpose of this post was to get opinions on what other people do and think about it so I can look into my thoughts and question them. like does everyone believe dogs understand or not? I'm i overthinking? etc so please remember it's not that serious and be kind to each other i did not expect this post to blow up so it's a little overwhelming for someone who doesn't post on here a lot
