Mitre saw noob question

Hey all, woodworking noob with a new sliding mitre saw.

When the slide is pushed all the way back or about 90% to the back the saw won't fully come down. The depth stop is not engaged. If I just slide the saw forward a bit it goes down fully. What am I not getting here? It seems like this cannot be intended because of I have a piece pushed up against the fence I can't fully cut through it and have to flip it over.

Any help is much appreciated thanks!
