Fan vent for basement bathroom leaked after heavy rain storm

Forgive me in advance for my non-expert explanation. I’m not a plumber nor do I understand anything about plumbing besides flushing a toilet!

We recently put in a half bathroom in the basement. Running event for the bathroom was a bit tricky because, well, it’s a basement and there’s absolutely lots of pipes and ductwork in the way. Big rainstorm today and it turns out our gutters need a little bit of cleaning. Some rain was spilling over exactly where the outside end of the vent is, which is located below our deck. Rain leaked through into the basement. Ruined a few ceiling tiles and we might have to repaint the wall underneath the leak.

Was this installed properly? Should we ream out our contractor who put it in or should we just politely ask him to put in some sort of soffit or cover over the vent to push the rain to the side?

Grinder pump vs. Macerating pump toilet

I’m finally putting a small half bathroom into our finished basement. We’re on septic and the basement is below grade so I believe a pump toilet is the only realistic option. The bathroom won’t be used much, perhaps 2-3 times per week.

I don’t have small kids in the house but I do have teenagers. I understand that despite my best efforts something might end up in this toilet that doesn’t belong. I‘m a little nervous about installing such a system but based on the info from my plumber and contractor, I don’t think I have many options.

I’m thinking of paying a little more up front and getting a heavy duty grinder pump instead of a macerator pump. Anybody have experiences with grinder pumps, good or bad? Is it worth spending a few hundred more or is it overkill for my needs? Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

My biggest peeve - the client drop in!

Does anyone else get this? The client that just shows up with no appointment and no advanced warning. They expect me to: a) actually be there whatever random time they come and b) drop everything to meet with them including ignoring phone calls, deadlines and clients that made appointments. The worst is the guy that is not even a client but just literally shopping around for an attorney by stopping at whatever law office they see. I used to get this way more at my old office which saw a lot of foot traffic. Thankfully, less so in my new office, but it still happens.

Maybe it is just where I practice or my area of law. I’m in medium sized city. General practice but I mostly do criminal and real estate. Most of my friends and colleagues in my area get the same thing. They don’t like it, but they just roll with it. Not me! It really drives me crazy and yes, it’s the hill I’m willing to die on. I refuse to meet with them even if I’m just sitting in my office screwing around on Reddit. Even though we’re professionals people just don’t respect our time I guess. Anyone else?
