Pretty much every woman I've ever known other than myself acts like walking at night is one of the most terrifying things in the world. And on top of that, a lot of people, both men AND women tend to panic and worry about me whenever I mention that I regularly do so. I even have this vivid memory of overhearing multiple female coworkers of mine talking about how "scary" it is that I walk home at night and how much they worry about me.
All of this is completely incomprehensible to me. I have been regularly walking to and from work regularly for years and have never felt any fear about it, nor do I think it's rational or reasonable to feel fear about it unless you live in an EXTREMELY crime ridden area. My town is not one of those areas. It's definitely not an idyllic suburb, but it's a far cry from Detroit too.
And I think most of the women who get so worried and scared about walking at night probably don't live in a high crime area either and therefore their fears are almost definitely overblown.
A couple weeks ago I had one of my craziest customer crash-outs yet. A man who looked to be in his 70s was buying beer, and my store is one of those where they make us ID-check EVERYONE for every alcohol purchase.
So I asked him for his ID, thinking it was just business as usual, and he went off on this tangent where he claimed that because he was ex-military, he didn't have to show it, and that by asking for it, I was disrespecting the military.
I tried to explain to him as nicely as I could that store policy requires everyone to be ID'd, and that I could lose my job if I didn't uphold it.
He then started to literally scream in my face, calling me "rude and toxic", among other more colorful things. Thankfully after a few seconds of this, another nearby customer who's a regular of mine and that I'm on friendly terms with jumped in and came to my defense and started yelling at him on my behalf.
So then he started screaming at her instead, and all of this commotion caused my team lead to come over and make the man leave the store.
I ended up having to fill out an incident report for AP about it, and in the process of doing so I found out that that guy had pulled the exact same stuff on one of my coworkers just that morning.
To top all this off, less than an hour later the guy ended up getting arrested for going back and trying to steal the beer that I refused to sell him.
