LPT: hang a slightly damp towel directly over an oscillating fan to hack a cheap AC

throwing this out there for anyone currently living in an apartment with absolutely garbage airflow because it literally saved my sanity last night when it was sweltering. you do not need to buy one of those crazy 500 dollar water systems when you can just use basic evaporation physics to drop the room temp by like ten degrees in under an hour to fix your sleep situation. I was desperately hunting around online for budget friendly tips and trying to figure out how to create a proper cooling setup for my bedroom environment and this one old dusty forum post mentioned the wet towel trick and it works stupidly well for zero dollars.

just make sure the towel is completely wrung out first so you dont ruin your floor with dripping water lol but seriously try it tonight if you are melting and your landlord refuses to fix the central air.

People who dropped over 3k on those fancy beds and still roast alive... what do we do now?

dropped some serious cash on one of those highly rated hybrid mattresses that promised to feel like sleeping on a literal iceberg and honestly it feels like a toaster oven after 3 AM. I am beyond frustrated because the store policy makes returns an absolute nightmare and now I am wondering if throwing even more money at this problem is just dumb but I really need help getting into those deep recovery stages at night. does getting specialized cooling accessories or specific bedding actually fix the issue or is that just another layer of expensive snake oil they want to sell me to cover up a bad product?

I saw someone mention this newer brand breescape that launched like a year ago but I am so skeptical of everything now. I just want to stop having my sleep ruined by waking up at 4 AM feeling trapped in a sauna so please tell me there is a pad or something out there that actually counteracts this ridiculous heat trapping before I lose my mind and just crash on the hardwood floor.

Trying to figure out a decent travel guitar for camping trips.

I was looking at the Martin travel guitar, but $450 still feels kinda expensive for something I’d mostly be hauling around outside and tossing in the back of the car.

I’m wondering if there are actually any solid cheaper alternatives people genuinely like, or if the cheaper travel guitars all end up feeling kinda bad to play. Just want something easy to bring around and solid enough.

Ceiling-mounted heat pumps: Game-changer or just a hassle?

I’ve been knee-deep in this HVAC project, and I need to know if anyone else is seeing the potential or just the headache. I was looking into a ceiling-mounted heat pump for a multifamily project in a cold climate, and honestly, I’m kinda stuck between being impressed and frustrated. This unit I’m looking at is from Midea, and it’s a pancake AHU style, which looks sleek and compact enough to fit the aesthetic we need for these tight spaces. But… am I getting in over my head with this?

The idea of having something so unobtrusive up in the ceiling sounds perfect, but then I started reading about how tricky the installation can be in these cold climates, especially when it’s meant for multifamily use. Have any of you guys worked with this kind of system? I’ve read some mixed reviews, and while the design is certainly promising, I’m wondering if this system can really hold up under our specific demands. Anyone else had a good or bad experience with a system like this? Thoughts?

At what point is “efficient” just doing too much??

I like efficiency. I’m literally the annoying person who reads manuals before buying a toaster. But HVAC efficiency shopping is a different animal. One contractor is pushing a basic single stage, another says I’d be dumb not to do an inverter heat pump, and a third basically gave me a bedtime story about comfort curves. I asked for the AHRI certified certificate because I wanted to compare actual ratings instead of vibes, and that helped, but it also made the whole thing more confusing. Some brands look better on paper, some have better local support, and then the distributor availability changes what they even want to install.

So in 2026, what is the practical sweet spot? Not the internet perfect answer, I mean the thing you’d put in your own house if you had normal money and didn’t want to babysit the system.

Need a robot vacuum for my home office—help me keep the mess in check!

Working from home with kids means my home office is a constant mess of papers, crumbs, and dust. I’m busy enough with work and parenting, and let’s be real—deep cleaning every day isn’t happening. I need a robot vacuum that can handle light messes in the office, clear out the crumbs, and keep things tidy without needing constant attention.

I don’t need something fancy, just a reliable vacuum that can handle dust and crumbs, is easy to maintain, and doesn’t require me to be involved in every cleaning session. Anyone found a robot vacuum that works well for home office spaces and keeps up with daily messes without needing constant supervision?

Is a robot vacuum overkill for a small apartment with maintenance and suction decay concerns?

I’m considering a robot vacuum for my small apartment, but I’ve been reading a lot about suction decay and maintenance issues that pop up after a few months. My biggest concern is whether these things are even worth it in a small space where the maintenance can feel like a hassle—especially when it’s supposed to be a set it and forget it kind of appliance.

Has anyone here experienced suction power decay or had problems with dirty mop pads in a small apartment? Does it still work after several months, or does it become a burden to keep up with the upkeep? Looking for long-term reviews from people in similar situations.
