Transit etiquette rules
I’ve been noticing that the transit etiquette lately has been falling short, so here are some reminders:
- Escalators
RIGHT hand side is for standing
LEFT hand side is for walking
Sometimes the standing side becomes walking(usually when it’s really busy) which is fine. THE LEFT SIDE SHOULD NOT BECOME STANDING!!
- Seating (to me this is like “using salad fork for noodles” etiquette level but doesn’t hurt to share right?)
This is obviously less of a “rule” but if you ever don’t do this and someone gets startled, it’s bc they were expecting the “seating order”
Trains:
1st person: sit near the window
2nd person: sit across diagonal from them
3rd person: sit next to the 1st person
4th person: last seat available..
When people leave (ex. 3 people sitting and 1 person leaves) you can choose to move or stay doesn’t matter
Buses:
Basically urinal rules lol.
In general also since I feel like I’m seeing this less, but if you see someone who looks like they need a seat, you should give them a seat. If you want to be super nice sometimes there are groups of people who get “split up” with seating so sometimes I offer to switch seats so they can all sit together. Especially if it’s something like parents and kids.
Obviously I’m not saying if you don’t follow these dishonour on your cow or anything, but if you are unaware of these “unspoken rules” now you are! Especially for international students/new transit users, I hope this can be of use to you all!
