BA Psychology. To do or not to do

Hi everyone, I’m going into grade 12 this fall and I was thinking of applying to the uofa for BA psychology. I want to go to medical school so I was planning on doing a “lighter degree” and then do my prerequisite during university. I really want to go to a medical school in the USA because of how competitive Canadian medical schools are. Also my high school grades are not the best because I’m just NOW learning how to study(83.6 avg). So what I’m really wondering is if this degree is the a good option in the long run, if things don’t work out I would be fine with going into clinical psychology. I also want to do BA honours psychology later on in my university career.
Thank you !!!

Alberta student loans

Hey guys, i’m stressing out about my loans because i only got approved for about 5.5k and my tuition and fees for one year is almost 20k. They expect my parents to contribute 10.2k and me, 3k. Yes my parents make more than most but they do not have extra money to contribute for my schooling. Especially with the inflation rates in here, and they pay 2 mortgages. I am enrolled in Bscn, it’s my first year going into second on winter. I’m distraught by the changes Alberta has made for student loans, i don’t expect grants or bursaries as I know other people need it more than I do but I truly need my loans for school. I’m a dependant student as I’ve only been out of high school for 2 years and live with my parents. Please if anyone has advice on this, I’d be super grateful!
If i can’t do anything financial wise, i unfortunately would have to drop out of my course.

Deciding between UBC and UAlberta for eventual reinforcement learning research

I am a second year transfer student with a 3.675 GPA and I got into honors applied math and cs minor, but I was planning to switch into the CS AI option after my second year.

For reinforcement learning specifically, I know UAlberta is probably the strongest university out there because the profs here like rich sutton and the focus on RL classes are excellent here. The eventual goal is to get a phd in the RL scene and work to become a research scientist.

Amii being located here and the Google DeepMind office opening up in Edmonton weights in the decision I should take, but is getting a lab position at Amii as an undergrad realistic? Usually its masters students being accepted into Amii labs. I dont know if should weigh Amii being here very highly if i dont have a lot of access to its labs as an undergrad. I know i have to do an honors thesis, and if anyone has done one or has experience in one, what does that look like? Do you get to pick the topic you research?

My main problem is the global rep. I know UBC is a lot more recognized when it comes to international job markets and phd applications. Does this worry about global reputation matter if you want to get a big tech job as a research scientist? Like i know places like UBC and UWaterloo have more streamlined paths for getting global jobs in tech compared to UAlberta so idk if going here would affect my chances in landing jobs.

Ive posted a thread like this on UBC's page too. Any responses are appreciated!

Transfer from Trad to CO-OP Engineering

I'm currently in Traditional Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta and I'm hoping to switch into Co-op Software Engineering in the next year

I'm trying to get a realistic idea of how competitive the transfer is, so I was wondering if anyone here has successfully made a transition like this. I worked off from Y2Q2 and got a 2.7 gpa this year, but got placed into trad because of the PAF deduction :(

If you have, I'd really appreciate if you could share:

  • What was your GPA when you transferred?
  • Which year did you transfer?
  • Were you coming from Traditional Computer Engineering?
  • Any advice on improving my chances?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who transferred in the last few years since admission competitiveness can change.

Looking for engg friends/study group!

I’ll be starting my first year soon but none of my friends are joining me in engg😢

I’m looking for some friends and/or study buddies! Hopefully enough to make a gc on whichever platform works best for everyone👀

Looking for pattern 1 people especially cause i don’t wanna be alone… but other patterns are also VERY welcome to join (pls)!

A little bit about me: I’m 18F (other girls reading this PLPELELSASE reach out), I like playing games, watching and reading stuff, drawing. I’m totally open-minded, dw about being judged or anything around me, just looking for some nice people!! It would be nice if we could keep in touch outside of school as well, but I understand people are busy so it’s alr if you can’t!

High school to first year engg

When Going from the highschool curriculum, to the first year engg curriculum, how big is the jump and what is the reason for the big jump? Is it because the course material is much harder or because there is more workload? Or a mix of both.

I finished with
95 in math 30,
91 math 31,
77 in English,
88 in chem 30,
92 in physics 30.

I understand that your High school performance is not directly correlated to your performance in first year engg, however with my grades do you think I have a chance to get a 3.5+ gpa? Aiming for a 4.0 because I want to do software engg co op and I heard the cutoff gpa is like 3.7+.

I developed really bad senioritis during last year of grade 12 so my grades kind of fell. I’m trying to re-wire my brain and stop doom scrolling to fix my dopamine receptors because they are cooked. Like I have 1 hour of work yet I continue to procrastinate it for days. Or I might just have undiagnosed adhd.

Do you guys think I fix myself, I have a chance to get in to Software Eng coop?

Uofa or uvic for engineering?

I am accepted to both and accepted my uvic offer and I paid and everything. But I was debating going to uofa heavily and losing the money to uvic. What school will be better overall, I know uofa is ranked higher for eng? And I was considering EE or maybe Chem E if I went to uofa.

Where do computer science graduates typically work?

As far as I know, the University of Alberta has worldwide prestige and is highly successful in the fields of computer science and engineering. So, where do students do their internships and what are the job opportunities like after graduation?

Got Into Mechatronics but Wanted Mechanical

I never thought I'd have to make this but I got into Mechatronics Engineering Coop with a 3.45 GPA as my second choice over Mechanical Engineering Coop (which was my first choice, with Mech E Trad being my third). I really don't know if I want to do software and automation oriented stuff since I've always liked more mechanical systems such as military/defense and whatnot (not to say they don't have software elements but there's a large mechanical side to them that caters to Mechanical Engineers).

My main question is now, how can I position myself to get a job I would actually be happy in? I wanted to do Mech E and go into some sort of military/defense engineering position (Maybe even aerospace), however I'm not sure if that's plausible now. Can Mechatronics Engineers get into the defense industry and even do some of a Mech E's work? If not, is Y2Q2 calling to me?

In general I've heard that Mechatronics don't even get jobs or coops over Mech Es and EE's, but somehow they're supposed to be the future? Really don't know what to do now.
