Fast tracking your BsN?

Has anyone been able to complete their 4 year BsN at the U of A in 3 years? I think I read online that it is possible, I was just wondering how? :)

What did you do to change your life around mid-program? (Aka from chud to chad, aka stop bedrotting aka stop doomscrolling aka stop sleeping in aka )

Comp Sci student here. I spent the last two years rotting and not holding myself accountable for my actions. Now I'm in my third year and hit with a massive reality check: internships, extracurriculars, the whole deal. My GitHub page is as empty as the third week of any class in university, and my LeetCode skills are a clear sign I should apply to McDonald's and try my luck flipping burgers instead. My grades are okay, not the best but definitely not bad. Honestly, I'm terrified that I've dug myself into a hole I can't climb out of before graduation ( not to meantion the 20 kg weight i gained over these 2 years)but I am done trying to make excuses for myself. I just need a brutal reality check and want to know if its too late to turn this around, or can a 6 month grind still get me an entry level position or internship before I graduate?

bio, chem, physics for grade 11 alberta plz help

Hi everyone. I am an incoming Year 11 student starting at a STEM school, and I'm TREMENDOUSLY worried about my schedule for next year. This is the schedule I received for sem 1&2:

sem1: bio20/chem20/physics20

sem 2: math20/eng20/chem30/biomed sci

My main concern is balance and durability. I work a part-time job, do volunteering, go to church, and I suppose I can spare 7-8hours a day studying, but I constantly have the fear of those hours not being enough, especially when preparing for finals, and probably 3 tests in one day, etc. I ended Math 10C with a 94, Science 10 with 96, then dropped to a 93, English with an 80, and Social Studies with a 91. Those grades may seem good, but I am the type of person who never cared about school and then suddenly started locking in, so I had to genuinely dedicate my whole day to excel; I also had a pretty light schedule in grade 10, which may be why.

My hope is that I get into engineering, which may also add extra pressure since averages are beyond competitive nowadays, and my main concern is moving forward with this schedule and realizing I made the wrong decision by trying to stack them all at once, only for them to fall apart. I am not afraid to try, but I'm worried about making the wrong decision, since it could affect me a lot, especially since I am also trying to do early admission. And what sucks is that the STEM school requires you to take 7 classes, so I thought taking Bio20 and Chem 30 would be far better than hogging 3 CTF courses, which I find useless all the time.

I don't have older siblings, so I have to find advice and help on my own, and honestly, it really stresses me out. I purposely asked for English in the second semester to practice more, since it's part of the eng prereq. I suddenly got accepted to this STEM school, constantly worrying about my future and grades, and now I'm forever worried about the time schedule I received.

A part of me wants to try it out and suck it up, as i realized from rather a later age in high school that fear and environments were the limitations to my opportunities and experiences I could've taken during youth, but the other part of me lingers to stay comforble, weather that be taking 2 core and focus, which I am able to dedicate more of my time and effort for possibly better results. Plus, I regret not taking any of the 20-level classes in grade 10, and I want to try taking Chem 30 in grade 12; I heard you need to take two maths and so on. I am just afraid of busying my grade 11 too much, so I realized I didn't really need to. If any of you guys have taken all three sciences in one semester, prepared for engineering, taken any of the courses listed above, or have suggestions for modifying the timetable, it would honestly be so helpful to me.

PS. I was also worried about taking Physics 20 before Math 20 just because everyone says so, but I don't know who to listen to anymore since everyone's opinions are so subjective; I'm hearing all sorts of things. ( I was thinking of doing math20,chem20,bio20 for sem1)

Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to read and even write a response! Look forward to hearing from you guys :)

Hello, I am getting back from a trip from a place with a very sifferent time zone from edmonton on the 29th. I want to know how important it is to go to the FIRST orientation day (I will probably be able to wakeup for day 2 nonetheless) or if i will be fine because I may completely miss my alarm and sleep past orientation due to time difference adjusting. Thank you

student aid question

can someone please explain how adding voluntary parent contributions help increase the amount of aid you receive?

Edit: guys i know it’s supposed to reduce it. But with the changes in how they expect parents to contribute this year, i just want to know why some people are adding RESPs to 3k a year as a method to increase the loans they receive, yk as opposed to being ineligible to receive anything at all

Upd: doing this will not increase the amount of loans

How is the wifi on campus?

Is the wifi on campus any good? I'm going into engineering and to save money on a gaming laptop. I'm opting for a cheaper business laptop with no GPU and using streaming on a VPN, or maybe investing in a JetKVM or similar to access my desktop. For this to happen, though, I need a good wifi connection that doesn't drop out too much and has adequate speeds. Any input on this?

Edit- When I refer to streaming, I am referring to using game streaming software to use software that would not otherwise be supported on my laptop due to os, slow because of no dGPU in the laptop, or architecture issues with my laptop. I'm sorry for any confusion I may have caused. If there are lab computers that can be accessible for students with the software needed for engineering, that could be an alternative and I would no longer need to worry about remotely accessing my desktop for software.

"Your call is in priority sequence and will be handled by the next available customer service representative"

Anyone else trying to contact AB student aid only to wait for 20 minutes and be hung up on while in queue?

What is everyone doing

If half the degrees need a masters, and only a small percentage of people are making it into the masters programs, what is everyone doing afterwards 🧍🏻‍♀️ everyone says that about BA degrees but all I’m hearing from a majority of BSc and BA holders are that they can’t find jobs and didn’t get into grad school. Is uni just a scam what is happening

Can I seriously not bring a chair?

Hi everyone,

I am a first year student moving into a single room in Mary Schaffer hall. I was looking at the rooms online and in person and the provided chair seems horrid. This wouldn't be an issue, I thought, as I would just bring my own but I checked the approved items list and it says "No Furniture". Considering we are at an academic institution and students are expected to study quite a bit as I assume, are we really expected to sit on this for the duration of our time in the dorms?

I think i studying and preparing for exams wrong (university edition)

I started uni last year and I still feel like I haven’t figured out how to study properly compared to high school.
In high school I always had homework, assignments, quizzes, etc., so I always knew what I was supposed to be doing. But in uni I’ll come home after class and there’s literally nothing due, so I just… do nothing
Then when exams come around, I feel like I have no idea how I’m supposed to prepare or what I should’ve been doing the whole time.Like, what are you guys actually doing after lectures? Do you review your notes every day? Study a little bit every week? Do practice questions? Or just study when exams get closer?
I feel like I’m doing something wrong and I really need to figure this out Any advice would be appreciated!!

Any secret free parking for motorcycles? o_o

Hey, I'm going into my second year and just got a motorcycle and was riding around trying my best to see if I could find any secret free parking without signage but alas I couldn't find any. I was wondering if anyone knew a spot or two that a small motorcycle could fit into 0_o I feel like it'll be nice early in the semester on my Mondays when I only have one class that I feel I won't fancy on taking an hour long bus commute there for my hour long class then an hour long back. And I've just been having tons of fun riding around :3 so if you know a spot or even wanna go riding please let me know, thank y'all!

Got waitlisted engineering and bsc

So I got waitlisted from both engineering and bsc at University of Alberta with a 88 avg

Chem: 95
Physics: 90
Math 30-1: 87
Math 31: 92
English: 76

What do I even do now, this is so stupid. I literally heard someone got into bsc with a 86 avg a couple weeks ago.

Engineering was my first option and bsc was second.

What are the chances I get into each program now????

Transfer credit report not yet done - incoming first year

Did 3 years at a different institute. BSc in CS AI. Naturally everyones transfer credit report is different but I wanted to get an idea on how they usually assign transfer credits? Is it for specfic course requirements or just general unit counts? I haven't registered for my fall term courses yet given that Im in a weird spot where Ive done most of these classes before so would appreciate if anyone had any insight mostly in terms of how I should go about registering for fall courses if its delayed - Id really rather not take repeat classes and then end up also getting credit approved for them after

CS Prospective student: what’s it like?

I’m applying this fall as a student from the U.S. (but with Canadian citizenship) to UofA. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the university and I keep seeing a lot of mixed stuff. I have a few questions.

I’ve been considering applying to the honors program because I’m interested in research, I just think it’s pretty cool. But I can’t find a direct answer on if someone can minor in something while in the honors program. I want to minor in theater because I’ve been doing it for a while and really like it, but is that possible in the honors program?

Do people in CS at UofA like it? Do you think it’s prepared you at all? The other (canadian) universities that I’m applying to are Carleton, UofC, Dalhousie, and UVic.

I toured UofA and it’s by far my favorite school on the list, I really loved the campus and the city, but I want to make sure the program is good, too.
