What is actually going on with captive orcas and what can I do to help?

Edit: I'm coming at this from the perspective that humans should not be taking any more orcas out of their natural habitat and the conversation here is about helping orcas that are already in captivity

So I'm fairly new to this topic and I'm kinda overwhelmed by the contradictory talking points. Presumably the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I'm not sure what that middle is.

These are my main questions:

  1. Is it true that captive orca enjoy being stationary because 'wild orca travel in order to find food'?

My understanding is that orcas don't travel purely for hunting purposes. Rather it's how they bond and socialize. Did I misunderstand that? I'm aware that captivity can sometimes lead to behaviors that are uncommon in the wild. Like how snow leopards are a solitary species but they can be very affectionate with each other when bonded in captivity. Basically I want to know if captive orca are going insane from boredom or if they enjoy their chill time.

  1. What's the deal with sea pens? My first thought upon hearing about them was that they would be great for the animals cuz they'd be more spacious and would allow for independence. But I'm now aware of Keiko's story and I understand how stressful it can be for the orcas. So it's confusing to see knowledgeable people support sea pen projects. Dr. Ingrid Visser is an example and I feel like I must be missing something cuz she seems to really care about the well-being of orca. Both captive and wild.

  2. Does anyone have a list of reputable orca books and documentaries? I don't want anything sensationalized, like Blackfish. Just straightforward and informative works. Some I know of are 'Secrets of the whales' (which I haven't seen yet, and 'A man among orcas' (which I have).

Thanks all, and happy Saturday :)
