Loro Parque will wait for Spanish Government approval before proceeding with the transfer

Saw some discussion regarding this here a few days ago, so providing a minor update. Loro Parque founder/president Wolfgang Kiessling took an interview and clarified that the park is still looking to take Wikie and Keijo, but wants full government support before proceeding.

Found a cute video of Pearl

On top of this, there are apparently rumors that Nukka is pregnant. Which I will say she does look a bit round right now, that is if I didn’t mix Sonya and Nukka up lol

Back to Pearl, I can’t believe she’s already 3 months old, she’s such a gorgeous lil’ baby <3

What is actually going on with captive orcas and what can I do to help?

Edit: I'm coming at this from the perspective that humans should not be taking any more orcas out of their natural habitat and the conversation here is about helping orcas that are already in captivity

So I'm fairly new to this topic and I'm kinda overwhelmed by the contradictory talking points. Presumably the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I'm not sure what that middle is.

These are my main questions:

  1. Is it true that captive orca enjoy being stationary because 'wild orca travel in order to find food'?

My understanding is that orcas don't travel purely for hunting purposes. Rather it's how they bond and socialize. Did I misunderstand that? I'm aware that captivity can sometimes lead to behaviors that are uncommon in the wild. Like how snow leopards are a solitary species but they can be very affectionate with each other when bonded in captivity. Basically I want to know if captive orca are going insane from boredom or if they enjoy their chill time.

  1. What's the deal with sea pens? My first thought upon hearing about them was that they would be great for the animals cuz they'd be more spacious and would allow for independence. But I'm now aware of Keiko's story and I understand how stressful it can be for the orcas. So it's confusing to see knowledgeable people support sea pen projects. Dr. Ingrid Visser is an example and I feel like I must be missing something cuz she seems to really care about the well-being of orca. Both captive and wild.

  2. Does anyone have a list of reputable orca books and documentaries? I don't want anything sensationalized, like Blackfish. Just straightforward and informative works. Some I know of are 'Secrets of the whales' (which I haven't seen yet, and 'A man among orcas' (which I have).

Thanks all, and happy Saturday :)

Inouk, Keijo, Wikie, Moana, Valentin and Freya

On the recent news of Wikie and Keijo potentially being transferred (not confirmed 100%), I wanted to make this a little tribute for the pod.

Wikie and Keijo are moving to Loro Parque

The French minister was this morning at Marineland Antibes to release a statement and check the state of the infrastructures. He announced that the French government has all authorization for transfer : Wikie and Keijo to Loro Parque and dolphins to Selwo Marina and Oceanografic. Next step is now in the hands of Parques Reunidos and Spanish parks. Transfer is expected before Summer. This change of plan was made after minor issues due to water quality and inbreeding problems came out.

Remarks:
Finally, I'm so excited for their new life and I hope Keijo will make good friends with Adan. A bit concerned about Wikie and Morgan fighting over the role of matriarch, other than that it seems alright, sad that Moana and Inouk didn't make it.

Thoughts on Waterworks?

What are all your honest thoughts and opinions on waterworks?

Photo: Sumar at SeaWorld San Diego (I used his pic, because today is his birthday), photo rightfully belongs to the respectful owner.

I find them to be beautiful and special but at the same time, I find waterworks a bit tacky and risky towards the safety of the trainers, and I believe if there are other forms of enrichment, they should be discontinued. I agree with SeaWorld, Europe and China's decisions to not do waterworks.

But there are exceptions,
Why Florida banned Toki's trainers from swimming with her - because of what Tilikum did, years earlier. They don't care about the stimulation of the whale who was known to be mostly sweet and kind to her trainers, Tokitae, for nearly half a century, Now Toki would now be deprived of one of her most important forms of enrichment. In her tiny pool and lack of killer whale companionship and toys, human companionship was the most precious thing she had.

I've been missing this "Beloved" Girl lately, she was so goregous and her beautiful blue eyes.

Pic.1: Kayla doing an alien
Pic.2: Kayla (and Katina cameo)
Pic.3: Kayla and Malia
Pic.4: Kayla and her mom, Kenau

All photos rightfully belong to their owners..

Rest in Peace, Kayla

Leaked video of SeaWorld Orlando's new orca presentation; APEX

Leaked footage of what seems to be a pre-show for the new killer whale show at SeaWorld Florida. Slated to be debuting in the summer, the stadium is undergoing renovations and strange new audio is reported to be coming from the stadium. So far we know very little about this show. Apart from a few leaked photos and this video. The end of the video kicks off into music (which was pointed out to be very similar to believe) meaning that this video may be a prolouge to the show, as with One Ocean and its prolouge which ends as the show starts.

Much like when believe was going through rehearsals, we do not know if this is official, and please keep in mind with any negative opinions that this show is subject to change, with new voice overs, songs and more. We will not know until the show is announced.

Shamu Celebration is back

Confirmed just yesterday by SeaWorld and some articles, Shamu Celebration : Light Up the Night is returning!

Electric Ocean will be at all three parks during summer, San Diego and Orlando have been confirmed to have the Shamu show on - San Antonio has not been confirmed, as it's not anywhere on their website like it is for San Diego and Orlando.

There have also been rehearsals seen at Orlando for a completely new orca show, with Shamu being used multiple times in it.. so the Shamu branding might be coming back.

Alongside that, filming for an ad was seen a while ago in which the orcas were apart of, it seems perhaps the corporation running SeaWorld doesn't feel the need to hide the fact they have orcas anymore?

( Also, the photo is Taima if anyone is wondering. )
