I charted 1,540 luxury hotels: price per night vs. how much they fleece you on water

I don't think I'm alone in this: paying for water, when I'm paying more than a grand a night, drives me up the wall. Actually at that price point even having to ask for it fucks up my holiday. My wife, who usually is the one picking the most expensive hotel, says I'm like Shane from The White Lotus, only a bit more of an asshole, if that's possible.

So when I saw this Ritz Paris thread, it gave me an idea: could I find every luxury hotel that charges for water at the pool, or worse, in the room? I ended up mapping about 1,500 hotels.

On the flip side: I love free stuff. I'll always remember the ice cream guy at the Oberoi Mauritius handing out vanilla cones to every guest on the beach.

So here it is, each dot is a hotel: further right = pricier, up = guests report paying for (or being rationed on) water in the last two years, down = freebies a standard room includes (free minibar, laundry, cocktail hour, bikes…).

Paying more does help a bit: about 1 in 10 hotels over $1,000 a night had guests report paying for or being rationed on water, against about 1 in 5 under $250. But plenty of the priciest still charge and that’s unacceptable IMO.

We messed up and can’t get back on track

The household is reaching unknown amounts of tiredness and would love advice if any (please).

About 3 weeks ago we got back from a one week holiday across the Atlantic and since then we can’t put down baby.

Our 5.5 months old, who at 4 months was able to sleep in 6 hour stretches has seen his sleep independence completely disappear.

Here is where we are at:

  1. He wakes up at 7am

  2. Takes 4 naps, at 8.30 (30-45min), 11.15am (90-120min, we have to step in and carry from 30min+), 3pm (30min) and 5.30pm (30min usually on us). Here if we nail his tiredness levels, he falls asleep independently (usually 3 out 4 times)

3.Goes to bed at 7.30pm with a routine.

  1. Does not fall asleep independently at bed time, though for the past few nights he has been able to fall asleep in his cot, with our hands on him and some shushing

5.False start at 30min, cries immediately, is either shushed back to sleep with his hands in mines, or is carried after 30min of cries

  1. Then wakes up every 90-120min -> carried to sleep half the time and fed back to sleep at 00.30 and 4am

We tried to extend his wake windows and put him on a 3 naps a day schedule for 7 days but he was absolutely knackered.

We don’t really know where to take it from here.
